Looks like Sunak is emerging with credibility.

One thing that Johnson doesn't have is economic credibility.

Isn't the dream ticket for the Tories that they have Sunak as PM, and Johnson is Foreign Sec?

I should think that if Tory MPs want that they will have to work hard to keep Johnson out of the final two. The membership will want Johnson

For a country that had to 'Brexit' because the EU was not democratic enough it seems there are a lot of very undemocratic procedures being used and the whole thing is a circus engineered to cause maximum instability in the financial markets. Apart from the profits the hedge funders are making it is further killing off any chance of recovery by the UK as all government heads worldwide are watching this fiasco with ever increasing disbelief. World trade relies on stability and 'compliance' meaning that if anyone wants to sell to the UK they need to know they will be paid and that anything the UK might sell is actually what was specified. The damage to the UK's international reputation is immense, far beyond the immediate headlines. Loo at people who still criticise Blair. That was many years ago and yet it is not forgotten but used as a 'reason' not to vote Labour. this principle works the other way round. The UK is proving itself untrustworthy which will be used against the UK for decades.

I think the optics will look terrible though - a sitting prime minister too scared to run in his own seat for fear of being kicked out.

I don't think Boris gives a monkeys about optics.

RTB I entirely agree re MPs' salaries not being set at a rate that attracts the best and brightest. We desperately need intelligent, competent people in politics.

Croque · 21/10/2022 11:00

The 'right' thing to do would be to give Rishi a chance. He has been through an entire leadership battle extremely recently, his critique of Truss' policies were bang on the money. However, the right wing tabloids already have their knives sharpened. His wife's tax dodge and the lockdown lies and overspending can be contextually justified.

His close links with Modhi are much more problematic. He is like a big little boy, I do not think he has the gravitas to inspire confidence on the world stage. Even if he says the right things, I think he would be overridden by the bully boys and throw in the towel sooner than is ideal.

Some watch the MP pay increase like hawks though, you see it on here. I can’t see a bigger increase would go down well.

The other issue is abuse - online and offline which puts people off.

On the hand raising the pay will attract people who are just after the salary.

Cornettoninja · 21/10/2022 13:01

I genuinely think that a pay rise would make very little difference to the calibre of who ends up in prime cabinet positions. There are already ‘decent’ MP’s of any colour who stand zero chance of in party promotion.

I would prefer PR and more stringently enforced parliamentary codes of conduct with actual, personal, consequences.

IrisVersicolor · 21/10/2022 13:03

I agree. I don’t think pay has much to do with the collapse in quality of MPs.

Not to mention that two MPs were murdered . . .

Why is salary relevant to the current situation?

My former MP was a postie who is now earning 4x what he used to earn plus pays his wife 3x the average Cornish wage... yet still thought a GPS device in every knife handle would solve stabbings.. he is now a whip (i think or was)

Truss is a multi millionaire, Kwarteng also a millionaire.. how much more do you wish people like these to get....

The main problem is the vast majority of people are not interested in politics... so ambitious and manipulative folk can easily get into positions of power.. & the only test to become an MP is if people will vote for you, your morals, education, integrity don't matter to the electorate.... just a witty 3 word phrase.. thats all we want.
