Are you out of your mind? Our Conservative MP certainly does not live in a manor! Grow up!

Ours does and he’s a multi millionaire from inherited money. He couldn’t be more out of touch.

Not denying the inherited fortune (monetary and social), nannies and aides though? You just have an issue with the description of a building?

Funny old thing to get quite so excited over.

RedToothBrush · 21/10/2022 08:34

How can any Conservative MP can be blind to the pressures facing people ?

They live in a Manor, they have a nanny, they inherited a fortune and they have servants and aides to deal with housework or constituency matters.

Maybe?

And just to add our present Conservative MP regularly visits his constituency and helps people where is the former Labour MP we never saw. So please be done with your simplistic generalisation

Our last Labour MP was never in touch with us on anything

This is the most up to date list I can find.

Here's where we are on latest public declarations of support for Tory leadership contest

Rishi Sunak - 44

Boris Johnson - 26

Penny Mordaunt - 15

This is just what we can see publicly - Boris Johnson's backers say he's got over 50, Sunak & Mordaunt expect big numbers today

Thank you.

how would I find out who my mp is backing? Do I just have to look at their social media to see when they publicly announce?

I’m not talking about being out of touch with the electorate. He’s out of touch with reality.

How gracious of him that he visits the peasants in the slum that he wont live in himself.

Yeah, I don't think there's a formal database so maybe try their twitter. I imagine by Monday most will have declared.

I think the thing that suprised me about MP's, was how many of them have no connection to the area they are representing, is this a new thing or has this always largely been the case ?

Bit of both. Gentry were traditionally land owners in a constituency but industrial barons later were almost given constituencies in return for their support.

In more recent times, people transfered from other professions to politics.

Thats become less prevalent as has rising through a local council and going on to become MP.

The last thirty years has seen the rise of the career politician more, who are detached from the constituency they are given. People who are loyal to the party are gifted the safe seats or ones which have a realistic chance of changing hands. Those which are a lost cause are given to pretty much anyone they can get.

In more recent times all three major parties have struggled to find enough candidates to stand in every seat. They send out begging emails to members. Thats one reason you end up with a number of very dubious candidates.

Ironically standing in a seat you stand no chance of winning is a pretty miserable experience. You still have to put in appearances and do leg work and you get loads of abuse for your hard work. You get next to no support from the party and very often you have to put in money from your own pocket to help fund your campaign. And you know you arent going to win and the ambition might merely be to get your deposit back.

Honestly the whole thing is a miserable shit show that favours people with inherited wealth or those who wouldn't do well in other careers.

Ironically I controversially think the MPs wage doesn't attract the best talent either. Its high but its not necessarily helping resolve matters. The career politicians have the best and safest seats. We desperately need good people with understanding of certain areas of business to go into parliament atm. Particularly IT. Yet if you are good you can easily earn more in the workplace. And then you do 5 years only for you to be dumped out 5 years behind in your career. Why go into politics unless you are an idealogue? We aren't getting moderates with skills and experience and those we do, don't last in parliament either. Partly because the media is also driving ever more extreme narratives due to click bait too.

I do think a massive overhaul of how we fund and run politics is long overdue.

In other places there are caps on donations to parties and instead everyone had a state sanctioned budget to even things out for starters.

Nadine might surprise us ..

She's be supporting Johnson all the way as she'll want her cabinet position back.

Worth noting that as it stands Johnson would definitely lose his Uxbridge seat, so if he becomes PM and wants to call a snap election he'll have to swap with another MP who doesn't care about losing their job.

hesbeingabitofadick · 21/10/2022 10:06

There's a few Tories standing down at the next election...he just need to find one with a majority.

DuncinToffee · 21/10/2022 10:15

There have been talks of him being moved to Dorries' constituency

Given the party is now polling at 14% I genuinely wonder if such a safe seat exists!

But it's all academic. No way would he call snap election.

RedToothBrush · 21/10/2022 10:17

This morning has been very slow on Johnson backers whilst Sunak has caught up...

Johnson 52
Sunak 50
Mordaunt 18

Thats interesting in its own right.

Will be interesting to see how that progresses during the day.

BirmaBrite · 21/10/2022 10:18

He could have Sunaks that's about as safe as you can get !

toomuchlaundry · 21/10/2022 10:21

Have any of them announced they are running yet?

CaveMum · 21/10/2022 10:23

I honestly think that MP’s wages should be put up and their expense accounts done away with. Like it or not you need to set the pay high enough to attract talented people, if you set it too low then you will only get people who are already wealthy and therefore narrow the pool you are drawing from.

I know it’s a national pastime to denigrate MPs of all parties to be self-serving, power hungry narcissists but I do think that the vast majority of them genuinely want to do a good job for the country and see it as public service. The difference is the way in which they think this can/should be achieved. None of them are trying to actively “destroy” the country.

toomuchlaundry · 21/10/2022 10:21

No one will announce until they are confident they can get close to 100 nominees.

This.

If there is total wipe out and they go to 48 seat as predicted then even if Sunak doesn't get the leadership now, he will get it after a general election because he will be the designated survivor!!!

I think the optics will look terrible though - a sitting prime minister too scared to run in his own seat for fear of being kicked out.

@RedToothBrush - Johnson has two problems. One the committee, and two, no Sunak and thus no economic credibility for what will be a very difficult time for the country.

I don't actually think he is much liked by his colleagues - while he has an exciting public persona, he did treat Tory MPs pretty badly. He lied to them. I know Truss was bad but they will remember that.

Also, Labour will just resuscitate all their old lines about him. They will have a few more about the Tory membership being deluded. I think quite a lot of that would stick, and it would be Turk having to take the blame for getting rid of him and eating that.

I do not think that is very attractive in an election. It also assumes nothing else of any difficulty happens. On a policy level Mogg for example is extreme. That is the next thing to hit the headlines.

LexMitior · 21/10/2022 10:34

Would be tough.

No disrespect to Turks intended
