Will Liz Truss resign today?

sunnydaytoday0 · 17/10/2022 01:00

Or maybe Tuesday at the latest? Would she really want to face the absolute public humiliation of PMQs on Wednesday?

Johnson is bright and charismatic but inattentive, he was not PM material, especially during a national emergency. I don't feel the visceral hatred towards him that many seem to, but he ought never to have left the back benches.

People keep saying this, but sometimes a dog is just a dog. Boris is thick as fucking shit.

walkingonsunshinekat · 18/10/2022 07:16

James Heappey Armed Forces ministers says the mini budget was approved and agreed by the entire Cabinet, which apparently goes show how competent they all are!!!!

Going completely against what Truss said.

Wow. Even The Daily Mail have turned against her. Tomorrows front page:

twitter.com/hendopolis/status/1582122353001390081

Online today the headline is DEAD WOMAN WALKING.

Re-listening to JH this morning - he used the term "Treasury-led review" - i.e the officials the deadly duo sacked and ignored in the first place - the "evil" Blob. It as if everybody is ignoring the ghost in the room as if she doesn't exist and never existed. Utterly bizarre and without precedent. I guess apart from absolute desperate panic at the heart of the government they are trying to intuit some collective Baldrickian cunning plan as to whither now? She obviously has to go and soon and no doubt will.

sunnydaytoday0 · 18/10/2022 08:23

It seems the only reason she hasn't gone is that her MPs haven't fully yet united behind one candidate to take over..

Armed forces minister currently saying she must stay on R4. He’s not convincing.

peridito · 18/10/2022 08:26

It seems to me that Truss is following advice .Keeping schtum and sitting on her hands .I don't think she's medicated ,I think she's desperately in need of sleep .What other posture could she have adopted yesterday when sitting next to JH?
That little smile was her way of counteracting the headlines of "downcast Liz" .

I think the Tories are figuring out who to replace her with and she has accepted this but is trying to maintain some dignity .

vera99 · 18/10/2022 08:38

Why does anyone bother making political predictions anymore? The answer to every political question right now is ‘your guess is as good as mine'. On a serious note, it's how democracies collapse and can go to very dark places. Never has our country (or the world) needed sane, intelligent, careful leaders who assemble like-minded folk around them and advance cautiously into the headwinds of "eye-watering" problems with the support and acquiesence of the country behind them.

Sallyingon · 18/10/2022 08:42

I don't understand why the conservatives.voted for Liz Truss and now don't like her policies. It's so weird..was it a plot to get Jeremy Hunt in the whole time?

No, cock-up from the constituency members, not a conspiracy (that's the province of MPs! Hunt is when the deputy airline pilot makes the announcement "is there a doctor on the plane?" whilst the pilot is having a heart attack and he goes to the cabin - leaving the rest of us in shock.

He said 'for what it is worth I think she is doing a good job' - A GOOD JOB???! He showed himself to be ridiculous. What a pure fool to praise someone who has only 9% people saying she is doing a good job.

The Tories are completely addicted to bullshit. They bullshit all day long.

A good job. Hate to see her fuck up then Angry

Because the membership are more to the right than the parliamentary party and have some weird idea of how the UK should operate. They are the same people who voted for brexit and sing rule britannia at the top of their lungs

kirinm · 18/10/2022 09:43

The Tories don't care about the damage done to the UK. They really only care about staying in power and appeasing the markets.

I've honestly no idea how this is going to play out. They will not like the optics of yet another PM but at the same time must know they can't win or improve their vote share with her at the helm. Installing a de facto PM is also bad optics.

I think they'll get rid and hope that whoever succeeds her is normal enough to placate those voters who have deserted them (if polls are to be believed).

I'm not sure how many conservatives care about more spending cuts to decimated services.

People keep saying this, but sometimes a dog is just a dog. Boris is thick as fucking shit.

That is a stupid statement. The guy is a brilliant writer. All you do with a statement like that is to show how ill informed (or ill educated) you yourself are. You can say that organisation was not one of his strong points. Fine. He certainly had deficiencies as a leader of a country but to say he is thick is just ridiculous.

Choccolocko · 18/10/2022 09:50

I think they will keep her but she will
limp on until she can’t take anymore.

If they had any backbone or duty of care to the country they would take this opportunity and rejoin the single market, steady the ship and then after this call an election.

Brexit and brexiteers are a cancer that needs to be cut out before the country has any hope of moving forward

SleeplessInEngland · 18/10/2022 09:50

He can write a pithy column (for 200k a year). His fiction and non-fiction books a fucking terrible.

Being able to write isn't an indication of supreme intelligence.

Quite. Particularly when said writing is riddled with racism, misogyny and homophobia.

What do you mean 'supreme intelligence'. There's no such thing. An ability to write well is evidence of a wide vocabulary and the ability to manipulate language. That MN heroine Marina Hyde is an example. BJ should never have been PM but to call him 'thick' is a bit silly. He's off making money speechifying now. Why waste your time worrying about him?

derxa · 18/10/2022 10:05

Blossomtoes · 18/10/2022 09:57

I would posit that you can write well even when your writing is full of racism, misogyny and homophobia.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 18/10/2022 10:08

I don't think Truss or Johnson are stupid. Not in the traditional sense, anyway. I do think that both of them are overwhelmingly arrogant, and that their arrogance causes them to overestimate their own ability.

Failing to recognise your own limitations - or perhaps not caring enough to recognise them - is a significant weakness. I would prefer our politicians to have the humility to recognise that they should seek expert advice in order to make the best decisions.

vera99 · 18/10/2022 10:22

I don't think the hashtag #bekindtotories is going to be trending anytime soon.

You seem to think we could just rejoin tomorrow - I highly doubt it would be an easy process to rejoin the single market, let alone the EU.

II find your comments about people who exercised their rights to vote a little worrying - although I agree that some of them aren't a force for good.

A lot of them are dead now.

pointythings · 18/10/2022 10:40

@WatchoRulo I share your concern up to a point, but really - how do we describe people who voted for this, have watched it play out and still think it was a good idea?

I also agree that we won't be rejoining anything anytime soon. The UK has proved that it is a bad faith actor internationally, that it is not to be trusted to adhere to treaties it has signed, that it is delusional about its own status on the international stage. The EU will be very wary of the UK and rightfully so. A lengthy period of rehabilitation and eating humble pie will be needed.
