Will Liz Truss resign today?

sunnydaytoday0 · 17/10/2022 01:00

Or maybe Tuesday at the latest? Would she really want to face the absolute public humiliation of PMQs on Wednesday?

No. Firstly because she probably doesn't want to stand down and as it stands, there is no way to remove her against her will until rules have changed. But secondly, there is no obvious successor who could become PM immediately with the full support of MPs. So that would mean going out again to the membership, who made such a terrible choice last time. That would lead to more instability and potential market turbulence.

User98866 · 17/10/2022 06:48

I think the party have ordered her to and she will have to.

mellongoose · 17/10/2022 06:48

I don't think she'll go today. Not sure how long she can last. She could ride it out if she and Jeremy Hunt are seen as a team which will unite the two factions of the party.

Just as one faction cannot tolerate LT, the other will not tolerate Rishi.

If she does go, they will need a unity candidate. Someone like Ben Wallace would probably be the best bet, but would he want to?!

reallyworriedjobhunter · 17/10/2022 06:48

@BonesOfWhatYouBelieve Thanks.

And like May she could resign. Knowing that she doesn't have the support of her MPs. On Friday she looked like she was struggling not to cry in the press conference.

megletthesecond · 17/10/2022 06:48

No. And I think they'll still win the next election.

Steakandquinoa · 17/10/2022 06:51

Can anyone give a quick synopsis of what’s been going on? My dh has been seriously Ill in hospital the past 2 weeks and it’s the first time I’ve been interested in the news.

MayThe4th · 17/10/2022 06:52

It’s going to depend on the markets.

As things currently stand the pound has strengthened on the Asian markets overnight. The FTSE start trading at 7, so that will give us a better indication.

And I agree they will win the next election.not because people don’t want the tories out, but because people don’t want labour in.

So while a lot might not vote for the tories, they won’t vote for labour either and so labour won’t gain the votes the tories have lost.

If labour are to win an election then they need to start coming up with something more than just “we’re not the tories.” Because that’s simply not good enough.

TokyoSushi · 17/10/2022 06:55

If it's not today, it'll be very soon.

We need a general election. Rees-Mogg is considering plans to dismantle workers rights.

NashvilleQueen · 17/10/2022 07:01

The Tories have a difficult decision to make given the optics. Whilst she wasn't the choice of the MPs party members voted for her and so might feel disgruntled (given they didn't want Johnson to go in the first place).

They also don't want the distraction of another hard fought leadership contest when there are so many serious issues to resolve in government.

I imagine those closest to her will be urging her to think about resigning first rather than triggering a VONC. Of course in those friendly conversations the reality of what comes next if she reuses will be writ large. Either way they will almost certainly coalesce behind a single candidate (although I've heard mention of a Sunak/Mordant ticket) so that they don't have to go through all of the hustings/debates.voting.

I don't think it will be today (although given the current state of the Tory party it's certainly not impossible) but it's inevitable and in the near future.

Everydaywheniwakeup · 17/10/2022 07:02

The woman appears to have the hide of a rhino. I have no idea if this is all her own work or if she's been incredibly badly advised, but the lack of knowledge and insight on all fronts is quite astounding.

MayThe4th · 17/10/2022 07:05

The pound has strengthened against all other currencies so far this morning including the euro. So we’ll see what it does against the dollar at lunchtime, and again when Jeremy hunt makes his speech later on today. Interesting that there are no press leaks as to what he’s believed to be going to say.

kateandme · 17/10/2022 07:06

If she leaves we will still be left with the same shit show.she doesn’t make all decisions.everyone she has in her cabinet and tories all work with her for everything she has put in place.yes she pushes over that line to total dick but this is a Tory government.it won’t stop being shit if she leaves.

Oh dear! Do we actually believe the Guardian?

londonrach · 17/10/2022 07:10

No...it be dragged on...maybe by the weekend. She definitely be the record holder for the shortest time as a pm though!

Avrenim · 17/10/2022 07:10

Only if Vogue offer her a photoshoot and a front cover. Maybe we should start a petition.

BonesOfWhatYouBelieve · 17/10/2022 07:13

I don't think it will be today because they won't want her gone without a firm idea of who is going to replace her without it needing to go to the membership.

But she 100% will not be leading them in to the next GE (unless she goes rogue and calls one now) so they will get rid of her at some point and they won't want it to happen too close to the next election as they'll want to give the new leader time.

At least things are improving a bit. She may still go as atm Hunt taking effective charge and talks of reversal are probably driving it.

PMQs could just be too bad

But hard to know. If they can unite behind one person I reckon it’s possible she’ll go pretty quickly.

I am cringing so hard for Liz Truss.

If I was her and I'd fucked up this badly I would be leaving the country name change the lot 😭

I have to say, this is what I don't get.

I lose sleep over much, much, much smaller fuck ups at work and I consider myself fairly resilient.

Surely you have to be some kind of sociopath to not be on the verge of a mental breakdown after making this level of fuck up?

Bluebellandpansies · 17/10/2022 07:19

I hope she does. I wish her peace.

TowerblocksAndSunflowers · 17/10/2022 07:20

Currently their rules are they can't get rid of her for a year. But if they had a majority of MPs who wanted to vote her out, they'd also have enough MPs to vote to just change that rule.

I really dislike that internal Tory party rules get to dictate who is our new PM and they can change the rules to suit themselves. Especially when they decided once and now think they decided wrong.

I'mof the opinion there should always be a general election if a PM has to stand down. I'm not into this unelected PM malarkey. Even more so this time when they are fucking the country over with their extremely bumpy transition.

Rainbowcat99 · 17/10/2022 07:23

As I understand it Ben Wallace is pretty popular and if they could get him to agree then that might unite them a bit? 🤷🏽‍♀️

#GTTO
Time for electoral reform and proportional representation!

Agree. She and her party are an omnishambles and are further embarrassing Britain (which is already a laughing stock).
