Will Liz Truss resign today?

Or maybe Tuesday at the latest? Would she really want to face the absolute public humiliation of PMQs on Wednesday?

Well she might not have gone today but she cannot recover from this. I am no fan of Liz, but whatever happened to collective responsibility? The Tory MPs and party members voted for Truss and wanted Kwartengs fiscal plans over Sunak. And they are now being hung out to dry.

We do not have a presidential system in this country. The PM is the manager, but the Party is responsible and it was the Party MPs that were elected by us. .....

Yet the most recent leadership campaign was run like a presidential hustings with novel competing and televised policies that bore no resemblance to the original election mandate they were given.

It is rotten politics, and the very personal pile-on on Truss simply amplifies that. There's a whiff of misogyny too, considering ' good old philandering lying Boris" whose gross misconduct in office really had to became beyond egregious for the knives to come out. Versus Liz whose crimes seem to be being getting chosen, bring shit at speaking and supporting her Chancellor's madcap plans .... with the blessing of the seemingly all powerful party membership. In essence she is toast for sticking to the script.

My point being that worse than whether Truss comes or goes, the party faithful don't seem to be learning anything from this debacle with parading Hunt and Mordaunt as business as usual .They are not prioritising salvaging the standing of politics and this reputation of this country on the global stage. They are just infighting, back stabbing, abd throwing each other off cliffs. Knowing that, regardless, they will not be reelected.

Apart from a vote of no confidence, are there any other constitutional or parliamentary devices to cease the access and activities of a government which is so obviously acting in bad faith? Given how they have asset stripped, pissed away taxpayers money so flagrantly already how do we try and salvage any remaining family silver before a GE?

Its a crime scene. I would be cordoning off Westminster and Whitehall with police tape, SOCOs everywhere, dusting for sticky little fingerprints in pies and snout prints in troughs everywhere.

urbanbuddha · 17/10/2022 18:55

when have you ever worried about the mental state of a male politician and wonder if his family are checking in.

Tbf I frequently worried about Boris's mental health, especially towards the end.

Hayliebells · 17/10/2022 18:57

Hanging on in there in an untenable position, all credibility shot, is just madness. She may well be very very stressed, and humiliated, but she’s perpetuating that stress and humiliation by staying in the job. I therefore have very little sympathy for her, because she could have resigned already and avoided all this. I was no particular fan of Theresa May, but she’s the last serious PM we had IMO, and she would have NEVER clung on like this, so publicly. She’d have resigned at the weekend, and retreated to the privacy of her home with some dignity left intact.

Wheresthebeach · 17/10/2022 18:57

I think she always has a blank, empty expression. But agree the stress must be unbearable. Ducking out today was pathetic. I doubt she’ll survive til the end of the week.

hesbeingabitofadick · 17/10/2022 18:59

Any news on the lettuce?

Morceaux · 17/10/2022 18:59

You know who’s getting off lightly here? The Daily Mail. No way would Truss have won without their campaigning of her. They were celebrating her budget when it was announced too.

Thatsasmashingblouseyouvegoton · 17/10/2022 19:00

The men in grey got rid of De Pfeffle snd he handed them their largest ever majority.

Does she really think she can stay on after trashing the economy in her 6 week tenure?

Catlady2021 · 17/10/2022 19:00

We can’t let the Conservative party members have a vote this time.. they didn’t exact make a good choice last time did they?

We need to end this once and for all with a GE.

Yep. They are heading the Guardian's "Who were doomed mini-budget’s biggest cheerleaders?" list:

I don't think that will happen. I think it will be a short contest before the MPs vote, and whoever is 2nd will withdraw. Essentially how Theresa May was elected. The Tories must know another protracted leadership race just won't fly with the electorate. They can't afford to lose any more seats than already predicted, it would be the end of the Conservative Party.

lovescats3 · 17/10/2022 19:05

She is known to be dim and it serves all the party members who chose her right that she fucked their pensions.her face is full of Botox and fillers

Jourdain11 · 17/10/2022 19:05

I was so underwhelmed by the thought of Truss. I thought, she's not just hideous or incompetent, she's actually both (and somehow also manages to be dull). But she's actually outdone my expectations for hideousness, incompetence and dullness.

The best moment of her premiership to date was the Aussie broadcasters saying that she must be one of the minor Royals at the Queen's funeral.

lovescats3 · 17/10/2022 19:06

There's a 7 the circle of hell for her Johnson Rees mogg and the rest of the cabal

Jourdain11 · 17/10/2022 19:08

What about Snakey, btw? Is he slithering around, plotting?

lovescats3 · 17/10/2022 19:08

Stress unbearable my arse she deserves everything that's coming and more she and the Tories don't give a shit about ordinary people, the NHS etc I honestly wonder about the level of intelligence of some of the posters on here

I have no sympathy.

Nine.

She and her ilk care for no one but themselves. Fuckers.

Thatsasmashingblouseyouvegoton · 17/10/2022 19:10

none

(I have a broken thumb atm sorry for typos!)

FistFullOfRegrets · 17/10/2022 19:14

Typically I had to go out at just after 4, I missed all of this 😫

Her budget was all about protecting the income of the well off.

I feel sorry for the families who can't make ends meet. For the pensioner who won't turn their heating on. For those who work so hard to 'just get by'.

I feel sorry for the UK electorate who deserve a stable and accountable government who are not just looking for their next quick buck, free holiday or corporate speaking gig.

It is just a shit show and it is too much.

EmmaH2022 · 17/10/2022 19:22

I just caught up with this in Pmt today

Penny Mordaunt did really well in tough circumstances

can't help but wonder if there's something sinister in the "urgent business".

can't figure out how the hell this happened. Doesn't look as if Truss can stay on even as a puppet. I still think that party members voted for her - surely this reflects on them? Was it arrogance, thinking they got away with so much over the years, they could get away with Trussonomics?

TooBigForMyBoots · 17/10/2022 19:26

romatheroamer · 17/10/2022 17:41

Despite the polls, I've heard more than once people in these vox pops say "She hasn't been there very long, she deserves more of a chance"

That is because they don't understand the enormity of what she did. If they understood they would be behaving more like Liz Truss.

Haffiana · 17/10/2022 19:29

The 'urgent business' was Truss meeting with Sir Graham Brady chair of the 1922 Committee.

Her blinking and grimacing etc etc was probably her processing the implications of exactly how many letters he has had...

urbanbuddha · 17/10/2022 19:31

Gove? He was listening attentively and definitely looked like he was plotting.

Will Liz Truss resign today?
