To call my baby (DD) ‘Ocean’

I’m pregnant. DH has said he “can’t think” of any names for DD. I’ve thought of a few and really like ‘Ocean’ but DH is saying it’s an “embarrassing” name but he hasn’t suggest any names himself for DD

OP posts:

I don’t think it’s cruel. DD could always change it when she’s older if she doesn’t like it

The very fact that ‘changing her name’ could be an option and all the hassle that involves, should be a clear indication it’s a silly ‘name’.

StupidSmallFruit · 03/10/2022 20:40

It doesn’t really matter what the name is - you can’t call your child a name one of the parents hates.

Luredbyapomegranate · 03/10/2022 20:41

It’s naff, like all the Summer, Meadow, Rain type names.

It’s like, yes meadows and summer and oceans are nice, but your child should perhaps have a name.

Push the boat out, think of a name. There is always Marina.

KimberleyClark · 03/10/2022 20:42

I think Oceana is marginally better than Ocean.

frols · 03/10/2022 20:43

Love the name Ocean! I have a Storm so I like the more unique names

I quite like it, am I imagining that there is a name Osian though, is that pronounced the same as Ocean?

Ossian is Welsh name - male - not pronounced lime ocean. Short o followed by shan with short a is the closest approximation I can give.

outtheshowernow · 03/10/2022 20:47

I don't like it. Maybe he needs more time to think of soMe names and there's plenty of tiMe if the baby is not born and even then there's still weeks to officially name then baby I don't think you should have a name your partner is embarrassed of

Needwine999 · 03/10/2022 20:47

I like it , a friend of mine is called Ocean

LimeCheesecake · 03/10/2022 20:48

Agree that the cruelest bit of this would be insisting on a name one parent hates. He’s beyond just being a bit “meh” about it and called the name embarrassing, it should be off the table.

he liking “really human names” is clearly meaning he likes names that are well established as a name for a person, not something that is a descriptive word for a geographical landmark /animal / force of nature. If the OP also has real human names on her list of potential names then they need to work on those to find a name they both like.

I love the name summer I regret not using it

Homewardbound2022 · 03/10/2022 20:49

Is she due at high tide?

OneFrenchEgg · 03/10/2022 20:49

Ocean is a unisex name, so does it matter that it’s close to Oisin?

Only in that it can just be tiresome to correct people. If they know one name and aren't familiar with the other one.

Katypyee · 03/10/2022 20:49

A name IS a word.

NortieTortie · 03/10/2022 20:50

Ocean isn't my personal style but I don't think it's as bad a name as some posters are making out. I wouldn't raise an eyebrow meeting a little Ocean.

If DH isn't contributing I'd say you have free reign to name DC as you please 😉

Figgygal · 03/10/2022 20:52

Sorry its bloody awful she will spend her life being sniggered at and so will you

PloddyPop · 03/10/2022 20:52

I think the French pronunciation of it is beautiful
O C Anne

Mummyoflittledragon · 03/10/2022 20:52

I knew an Ocean. The pictures the name can evoque and the power of the ocean is appealing. However, in reality, having shhh as the most vocalised part of a child’s name and due to the setting we were in, found it rather grating to hear the name repeatedly spoken.

Me too. I would go for this if a girl.

KimberleyClark · 03/10/2022 20:54

In Welsh there are lots of “word” names such as Enfys (rainbow), Heulwen (sunshine), Haf (summer), Eira (snow) but they don’t sound so naff somehow!

MermaidSwimming · 03/10/2022 20:54

I know several Oceans, I quite like it but e do live by the coast so that may influence names

ChillysWaterBottle · 03/10/2022 20:55

I love it!

Noteverybodylives · 03/10/2022 20:55

Yes, well, at least they are normal names!!
Is it a contest these days to find the most stupid words as names for offspring??

Why is it for you to say what are normal names?

What if you are not white British, are you allowed non normal names then?

Is Casper, Balthazar or Melchior ok?

HouseofHolbein · 03/10/2022 20:59

I work with an oceana. Thought it was a really odd name at first but tbh she's lovely and the name has massively grown on me.

I also work with a Pebbles. She is lovely. That name hasn't really grown on me 🤣🤣

Bonjovispjs · 03/10/2022 21:00

I think it's lovely😊

housemaus · 03/10/2022 21:08

I know an Ocean. When I first saw her name I thought it was a bit silly but it actually really suits her and I don't register it as 'unusual' now!
