To call my baby (DD) ‘Ocean’

I’m pregnant. DH has said he “can’t think” of any names for DD. I’ve thought of a few and really like ‘Ocean’ but DH is saying it’s an “embarrassing” name but he hasn’t suggest any names himself for DD

There was a boy in my son's class called Ocean. Considering how words like Bear, Willow and Magnolia have become names, I don't think it's that weird.
If my DD's name was up to me I would have gone for a nature name like Willow.

Willow isn't a new name. My great aunt was called Willow and she'd be over 100 if alive now.

Personally I really don't like names like Ocean, River, Teal etc. I know this probably makes me sound a bit snobby but I find them really tacky. But that's just my opinion, some people won't like my daughters name, but I like it and that's enough for me, you can't please everyone.

And congratulations BTW.

baxtersm · 03/10/2022 21:16

There's a girl on Instagram her username is Singlemumoftriplets . Three girls ones called Ocean and she's gorgeous

Mysteryuser · 03/10/2022 21:18

Actually, to anyone considering naming their kid with a how cool/ unique/ interesting/ hippy am I name... just don't. Grow up. That said by someone with a ' difficult ' name.

SnoopyNoseTits · 03/10/2022 21:19

if you like watery nature names, how about kelp? Or maybe shrimp. Shrimp is cute

EdenSandwich · 03/10/2022 21:20

Ocean is usually a boy's name but not judging, just saying

Daisybuttercup12345 · 03/10/2022 21:20

I knew a little girl called Ocean 30 years ago. It was because she was conceived over the Ocean!
She got teased a lot.

Jenasaurus · 03/10/2022 21:20

Sticking with the seaside theme what about Pebbles.

Ihatecocomelon · 03/10/2022 19:04

I knew someone called Oshian (sounds like ocean).

Do you mean Oisin?

It's a (gorgeous) Irish boys name pronounced Awsheen.

Mysteryuser · 03/10/2022 21:25

I mean, why would you actually do that to someone ? Who has zero say in the matter? I probably have a bit of a chip on my shoulder, but why make life harder for your kid than it needs to be just to prove to your mates that you're so ... unusual?

rummybunns · 03/10/2022 21:27

When they get to school and people start saying its the "motion of the ocean" I'm sure they will thank you not!

For heaven’s sake, can’t we just go back to Sarah, Hannah, Rachel, Claire and Louise and have done with all this nonsense about pushing our own individuality on to our kids? They’re children, not dolls.

Those names were ‘out there’ back in the day.

They’re also white, British names and it means that no other culture can call their child anything else because people like you think they’re nonsense.

You can call your kids something that makes them blend it and not feel
special.

But don’t offend entire communities of people because their kids aren’t called Sarah or Claire.

Growing up all of my friends called Sarah, Hannah etc hated it because there would be about 10 of them in each year group.

Pretty sure Sarah and Rachel were never considered ‘out there’ names - what with being very traditional/biblical names.

Royalbloo · 03/10/2022 21:31

No.

There must have been about 30-40 PPs who have known at least one ‘Ocean’, if the OP just wants to prove she’s ‘unusual’, she should probably pick a less common name.

I have always loved the name ocean it's beautiful. Call your baby whatever you want and as an adult she will be used to her name and glad you didn't call her something boring that there are six of in her class! I really don't understand the mumsnet snobbery with unusual names

One woman's 'unusual' is another woman's 'ridiculous'.

LadyRoughDiamond · 03/10/2022 21:47

How about Oceana?

Stompythedinosaur · 03/10/2022 21:49

I think it is fine. It isn't offensive, impossible to spell or likely to cause embarrassment. She will be part of a generation that is full of names like this.

You do probably need to compromise with the other parent, though.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 03/10/2022 18:52

Same here. When people shout 'hey OCEAN' across the street, she can wave at them.

😂😂😂😂

So is Balthazar and Mohammad but you can bet that MNers would look down their noses on those sorts of names.

I don’t think anyone would bat an eyelid at Mohammad, unless it was being used by a white atheist or something. It’s one of the most popular names.

They would have in the UK 10+ years ago.

GucciBear · 03/10/2022 22:05

Dear God!! Atlantic or Pacific?? Poor child.

Keyansier · 03/10/2022 18:51

I don't sea anything wrong with it.

Hahaha!

TokyoTen · 03/10/2022 22:10

Personally I love the name Ocean. Congrats on your baby OP.

keeprunning55 · 03/10/2022 22:10

Ocean is a beautiful name! It conjures
up images of the sea in all its glory. I know a girl called Ocean.
