To call my baby (DD) ‘Ocean’

I’m pregnant. DH has said he “can’t think” of any names for DD. I’ve thought of a few and really like ‘Ocean’ but DH is saying it’s an “embarrassing” name but he hasn’t suggest any names himself for DD

I think both parents have to agree to the name, but it's unreasonable if your husband is vetoing all of your suggestions without making any of his own. If he doesn't want to use an app, he can go through some lists online like the top thousand baby names England & Wales (just for example) and pick at least few he likes. Or keep a list and write down any name he happens to hear that he likes.

One of the babies born on the voyage of the Mayflower (1620) from Europe to North America was called Oceanus (the other was Peregrine), so it's been around in some form or another for a while.

I know an adult Ocean. She loves her name. It was on my baby list. I say go for it! I love Willow and Wren too.

I don’t think it’s cruel. DD could always change it when she’s older if she doesn’t like it

I don't like my name but couldn't call myself anything else as its not my name 🤷

findingsomeone · 03/10/2022 20:19

No joke there are two Oceans I know of! The one I know well didn't take inspiration from anything already out there her family just have connections to the sea. I have never in my life known any before this year though.

1994girl · 03/10/2022 20:19

🤣🤣 just no.

Pilipalapal · 03/10/2022 20:20

‘Ocean’ isn’t as unusual a name as people are making out. It’s been around for a long time and is recently having a bit of a surge in popularity (for both sexes).

Yes, well, at least they are normal names!!
Is it a contest these days to find the most stupid words as names for offspring??

Yes I agree with you. I really don’t get why parents have to give their children unique out there names.

Mysteryuser · 03/10/2022 20:25

I'm sure your DD will be soooo glad she's got such cool and interesting parents when she's grown up. Especially when she's trying to be taken seriously at work. Maybe consider her?

miltonj · 03/10/2022 20:26

Congrats!

Call your baby ocean. Why not? Maybe some people will be taken aback but names just become names pretty quickly. There was a little one called ocean where I used to live but he was a boy. So I don't know if it's more commonly used for boys, but I think it works!

PinkCheetah · 03/10/2022 20:26

Please, please don't.

Hohofortherobbers · 03/10/2022 20:27

I quite like it, am I imagining that there is a name Osian though, is that pronounced the same as Ocean?

passport123 · 03/10/2022 20:28

Poor child. Naming your baby is not a point to show how unique and clever you are. Would you like to be called Ocean? At least her father sounds like he has some common sense.

Koffee123786 · 03/10/2022 20:29

I know of a River and her sister is winter. I think the names complement each other. So Ocean isn't that unusual

tea1tea2 · 03/10/2022 20:32

i really like it . Go for it. i relate to calmness

But it’s not a particularly unique name, is it? Loads of PPs have known at least one ‘Ocean’, and it’s one of the fastest growing names
in terms of popularity (in the US, at least).

My bonnie lies over the ocean....

Or the other version we used to sing 'my body lies over the ocean, my body lies over the sea, my father pay over my mother and that's how they got little me'.

OneFrenchEgg · 03/10/2022 20:33

It doesn't sound pretty when you say it though. Plus it's very close to the boy's name Oisin.
I love unusual names but if you say it out loud it's a bit pedestrian and boring.

IDidntWearASmileToday · 03/10/2022 18:53

There's a child in DDs school called Ocean, I also know a baby Ocean. I probably wouldn't personally use it but I do quite like it.

Surely a baby Ocean is a sea.

Ocean is a unisex name, so does it matter that it’s close to Oisin?

RuthW · 03/10/2022 20:35

I know an adult Ocean.

BaileySharp · 03/10/2022 20:35

It's a bit of a hippy name, if you like it you like it

JudgeJ · 03/10/2022 20:36

Thedeepdeepsea · 03/10/2022 19:07

I like Marina too

Oh Marina, oh Howard. I'm watching Last of the Summer Wine again, seriously miss that area.

Mummadeze · 03/10/2022 20:37

Cool name. I like it

HeadNorth · 03/10/2022 20:38

My DD knew an Oceana, which I think is a lovely name.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 03/10/2022 20:38

I like it

I’ve taugh a Bay, a Willow, 2 Rivers, a Red, a Blue, a Moon, a Sol, loads of Summers, Skyes Brookes, a Luna, several Rowans and loads of other nature names.

Its not weird or odd, unless all the other parents who named their kids similar are. But they aren’t.
