To call my baby (DD) ‘Ocean’

I’m pregnant. DH has said he “can’t think” of any names for DD. I’ve thought of a few and really like ‘Ocean’ but DH is saying it’s an “embarrassing” name but he hasn’t suggest any names himself for DD

Do you mean Oisin?

It's a (gorgeous) Irish boys name pronounced Awsheen.

It's pronounced uh sheen.

2bazookas · 03/10/2022 22:14

Scots and Irish are going to think you can't spell Oisin.

"Oceane" is a lovely baby girl name which has been given in France for at least 2 decades... That doesn't shock me at all, I'm a primary school teacher and used to all sorts of names.

Pineappleflowers · 03/10/2022 22:21

You do both have to agree it’s so annoying 😬

Would you consider Osian? Welsh man’s name, derived from the Irish legendary poet and warrior Oisín. The name is derived from the Irish for little deer.

Willow isn't a new name. My great aunt was called Willow and she'd be over 100 if alive now.

Personally I really don't like names like Ocean, River, Teal etc. I know this probably makes me sound a bit snobby but I find them really tacky. But that's just my opinion, some people won't like my daughters name, but I like it and that's enough for me, you can't please everyone.

And congratulations BTW.

Maybe 100 years ago Willow was considered a bit out there. Names have to start being used somewhere. Otherwise we'd all still be using things like Ethelred and Ermenburga.

Ocean is fine, easy to spell and sounds pretty. No more weird than other nature names logically.

What geographical features will be used as names next? Valley? Lake? Beach? Mountain?

Lcb123 · 03/10/2022 22:25

Your choice but I think you have to think about her adult life. Also why should he have any ideas - the baby isn’t here yet. Find it odd to discuss names before

Floomobal · 03/10/2022 22:26

It’s a ridiculous name, but it’s probably just pregnancy hormones.

Jolie12345 · 03/10/2022 22:26

Yeah, because that happens all the time.

Iamchurchill · 03/10/2022 22:31

Pond or Loch would be more original? Or Maybe waterfall?

Mybumlooksbig · 03/10/2022 22:34

Awful name, sorry

DisneyMillie · 03/10/2022 22:38

My girls have very “safe” traditional names and I normally hate anything even vaguely out there but I actually really like Ocean!

mycatisannoying · 03/10/2022 22:44

Call her Billie. Billie Ocean Grin

Mysteryuser · 03/10/2022 22:47

And, of course, you'll have the issue of all of the parents of the Sophies, Olivias, Louisas et al sniggering behind their hands at your ' original ' choice. But hey, you do you and all that.

Longtimelurkerfinallyposts · 03/10/2022 23:09

Notice someone suggested 'Pebbles' to stick with the theme - what about Sandy instead? (lovely gender-neutral name)
I was a bit bemused by some of the names mentioned upthread - eg Swan - I have met a lot of people with unusual names but never come across or heard of a Swan. Is that really a thing?!!!

It's mad but I actually quite like the sound of Lake tbh. Like Blake but simpler, or Lane from Gilmore Girls.

StapFooterin · 03/10/2022 23:17

A little girl joined DS2's school a couple of years ago and she was called Ocean. I'm usually quite traditional with the names I like, but I thought it was absolutely beautiful and really suited her.

dontyouwishyourgirlfriendwas · 03/10/2022 23:45

Honestly I think it’s tacky and a bit try hard. But I’m not even sure why you posted. Your husband hates it, therefore can’t / shouldn’t name your baby it.

BlackeyedSusan · 03/10/2022 23:58

It's lovely.

Thedeepdeepsea · 04/10/2022 07:25

DH has agreed that if he doesn’t come up with any suggestions then I get to pick DD’s name. I’ve given him my shortlist of names and said that he can add some if he wants

Am I being a snob or do names like ocean, lake, river etc seem to come from certain socio-economic sections of society? Sorry if that offends but it’s merely an observation based on my experience

Vapeyvapevape · 04/10/2022 07:59

Ocean is a bit P&O ferries

faw2009 · 04/10/2022 08:11

I think it's growing on me. I mean there's also names like Brooke, Rainbow, River...

A lot can depend on the surname too.
