To feel mortified ...

... that my new next door neighbour came round at 11.15 in her pyjamas to tell me that my TV was so loud it kept her awake? I genuinely had no idea.

I had the radio on through the TV, which is downstairs, whilst I was working upstairs, and I turned it up so I could hear it. I've done this before but the previous neighbour never said anything so I was not aware it was a problem. I live in a mid terrace and the TV is on the wall that joins to her house. She also told me it was loud last week (this I'm not sure about, as I only watched it one evening and I was sitting in front of it).

She only moved in on Wednesday! I feel a total fool. It really wasn't THAT loud but obviously too loud for her.

Oh, I'd misunderstood- I thought the OP had left the tv on downstairs and then had a radio on upstairs and had to have it loud to drown it out. Which might have been worse.

Get headphones and play the radio via your phone OP. Don't worry about it - just a good thing the new neighbour told you asap.

Paparazzicrap · 02/10/2022 00:27

Buy an alexa and play it in the room you're actually in......

ichimedin · 02/10/2022 00:29

How could you not have realised?!

Lalliella · 02/10/2022 00:22

It WAS that loud OP. That’s completely out of order of you to have it on really loud downstairs just so you can hear it upstairs. Too right you should be mortified. You’re a nightmare neighbour. That poor woman.

Jesus, chill out. She's hardly asbo material. She's mortified and won't do it anymore, what more do you think she should do lol

SnarkyBag · 02/10/2022 00:32

Well you’ve apologised and won’t do it anymore so that’s good but in the nicest possible way how could it not occur to you? I’m often baffled by just how oblivious people can be towards others!

Still it’s restored my faith a little in people: Neighbour comes to speak to you and you apologise and agree to not do it again. No drama.

PrettyPrim · 02/10/2022 00:33

I cannot imagine doing something so selfish in a mid terrace with the tv on the adjoining wall 🙄Buy a radio or use your phone. Ridiculous

LoveMyPiano · 02/10/2022 00:34

I honestly do not believe what I read on here sometimes. Are people SO nasty, extreme and reactive. Its quite laughable.

CheezePleeze · 02/10/2022 00:34

And I didn't ask if having the radio on loud was reasonable. I asked AIBU to feel mortified, because I do. I just hadn't realised.

Asking if you're being unreasonable to feel mortified, smacks a bit of arrogance. Like you want people to assure you that you shouldn't feel that way.

Of course you should feel bloody mortified. Why are you asking the internet if that's unreasonable?

LoveMyPiano · 02/10/2022 00:38

Depends on the construction/materials how the sound might travel through. Some older terrace houses are quite substantial, and the sounds that you might think would be heard, aren't and vice versa.

It is ridiculous and mean to say that the OP is a neighbour from hell, arrogant etc etc.

Bpdqueen · 02/10/2022 00:38

I'm mid terrace and like my music loud so often wear headphones to avoid annoying the neighbours. You can literally hear everything in terraced houses

MarshaMelrose · 02/10/2022 00:39

Do you think I have the time and am bored enough to write rubbish at this time of night?

Maybe you've nothing else to do now that you've had to turn your TV off.

Maybe not.

But you said "if this is real" and if it isn't real, then the TV wasn't on in the first place to upset the woman next door ...

Lots of people have inconsiderate neighbours who affect their day to day lives, it makes them grumpy. Fair enough.

Honestly, some of these comments 🙄 we all do slightly dumb things sometimes, just take it as a learning curve, don't do it again and move on.
You're hardly the neighbour from hell if you're on Mumsnet, upset about doing one thing wrong.

I suppose it could have been worse. It was Fearne Cotton Sounds of the 90s, not Motorhead yelling out the Ace of Spades. But the point has been taken.

I meant that some of the replies are extreme, and so nasty!

(And I know what it is like to have awful awful neighbours.)

Raidtheice · 02/10/2022 00:54

Well you know now so keep it down in future.

My old neighbours had their music and TV so loud it was ridiculous. We could hear it perfectly on our house. I feel sorry for their new neighbours now TBH.

HaveringWavering · 02/10/2022 00:54

YANBU to feel mortified. YAB a bit U not to have thought about playing the radio via your phone in the bedroom rather than the downstairs TV.

Chooksnroses · 02/10/2022 00:54

Bluetooth headphones? That's what I do.

I'm actually quite heartened by this thread. I get really pissed off when I find other people inconsiderate and selfish towards me. I'd never imagine they're doing it obliviously, which for me, would lessen my grievance.

Still a little baffled as to how it didn't occur to you that it would be too loud though.

My neighbour never even occurred to me. You might think that inconsiderate and selfish, and you may be right. But really, suggesting that people do things like I did purely to piss off a neighbour who I have only known since Wednesday? You'd really think that?

Different people have different hearing levels. But why not have a radio in the room you are in?
