To feel mortified ...

... that my new next door neighbour came round at 11.15 in her pyjamas to tell me that my TV was so loud it kept her awake? I genuinely had no idea.

I had the radio on through the TV, which is downstairs, whilst I was working upstairs, and I turned it up so I could hear it. I've done this before but the previous neighbour never said anything so I was not aware it was a problem. I live in a mid terrace and the TV is on the wall that joins to her house. She also told me it was loud last week (this I'm not sure about, as I only watched it one evening and I was sitting in front of it).

She only moved in on Wednesday! I feel a total fool. It really wasn't THAT loud but obviously too loud for her.

Just based on your OP, her property joins the wall your TV is on and you were upstairs. Therefore she could have been physically closer to your TV than you were to hear it much louder than you did.

Dirtylittleroses · 02/10/2022 14:04

What an odd thing to do , playing your tv so loud you can hear it clearly upstairs late at night, buy a radio, or an echo dot or something, and then to recant what she told you about her previous neighbours etc just all really quite odd.

Bless you, sounds like you’re not very tech literate

you could have listened to the radio from a device upstairs - your phone, a laptop, a tablet, smart home devices like google home, a speaker, an actual radio etc. There’s probably more that I’m missing. If you don’t have a suitable device, just buy one as they’re not expensive. You can’t just crank up your TV volume so it transcends walls and ceilings and then be shocked your neighbours can’t sleep.

You don't need to bless me. I teach science in a university and am very "tech literate " thanks.

You don't think it's "quite odd" to tell all that to a complete stranger?

Yes, I said it was odd. You told millions of people. I find it odd, she’s your neighbour and was just chatting to you

if you’re tech literate how do you not know if you put your tv up So very loud you can clearly hear it upstairs through the floor that someone on the other Side of the wall would hear it even louder and that many cheap portable devices exist for you to listen to the radio on the room you’re in?

No, I meant don't you find it odd that a complete stranger would tell me all about her family dynamics as well as the neighbours?

What's that got to do with the price of fish?

Because I didn't use a laptop, tablet, phone or old fashioned wireless doesn't mean that I don't possess those items or know how to use them. Or that I don't understand physics.

It's nothing to do with that. Simply that I chose to put the telly on as it was on that channel already.

She’s not a complete stranger she’s your neighbour making convo you are the only one who told complete strangers

Because I didn't use a laptop, tablet, phone or old fashioned wireless doesn't mean that I don't possess those items or know how to use them

so you have these items and chose to blast your tv all the way upstairs late at night instead?

Confused

No one likes being in the wrong, which is probably why you feel mortified, but have apologised and won’t do it again I presume, so I think you can forgive yourself and forget about it.

You're being silly. She's as much a stranger as you are. Telling people all about your family problems is not making "convo" 🙄it's oversharing.

What’s this about, it’s just getting even weirder. What’s her over sharing in your view got to do with the fact you were blasting the radio upstairs late at night? It doesn’t make your behaviour less wrong

Copying this for you in case you missed it the first time. The issue with the "behaviour" is old hat now. My neighbour then started a lengthy conversation:

I intended to chat with her today but she waylaid me as I was leaving the house and kept me chatting for half an hour at least when I was trying to get away for a cider festival!

She said her daughter thought she was over the top and hoped I wasn't offended. We discussed that and all seems fine.

Then she told me about her dead husband and her ex, her two sisters who are bitches and her parents who are dead but she's not bothered about her mum. Then about everyone shagging loudly in the last flat complex she lived in and screaming arguments, taking drugs and cheating. And asked me if I swear because she does. All TMI for me.

And she just wants a quiet life!

You're right, her over sharing is nothing to do with the TV being on last night. So I'm as puzzled as you why she told me all this.

She felt like it? Who cares. What difference does it make.

I honestly do some times wonder if Mumsnet is actually real - or if there isn't a team of people making up posts, and then adding controversial and inflammatory responses. Partly. Before anyone points out (which actually I know they won't) that I am truly here.....

This is one of those times.

I definitely haven't made this up. I've sat at home watching TV terrified of the doorbell ringing and keeping it as low as possible.

Well, that is why I am conflicted. I didn't really think that your situation as made up. But some of the replies seem so OTT/aggressive/obtuse, and just plain nasty - that I forgive myself for thinking Mumsnet is just or partly an artificial construct.
(Mainly for advertising purposes. Which I do not see, all hail Adblocker!)

I think your neighbour really might become a problem, less so for the "noise", but for her oversharing and thinking she has the upper hand over you. None of that is good, in my opinion and experience.

I hope you get change to look at how your TV/music equipment is configured (f you can - lol - understand the tech). Personally, I would try to find a way to get it off the wall - most flatscreen TVs have speakers in the back and that is why we need the volume higher from the front, which increase further the volume out of the rear - and position it somewhere else.

I am watching Predator the the moment, and that is not a quiet movie - but because my TV is away from the wall, I know it cannot be heard next door. And I never hear theirs (on the opposite wall though) an it is much bigger than mine.
I hope I am not speaking too soon though.

I would keep out of the way of your neighbour if I were you. I hope you got to and enjoyed the Cider Festival.

LoveMyPiano · 03/10/2022 00:06

Excuse typos....it's a bit gloomy (for atmosphere) and had a long day of cleaning motorhome (no Cider for me...)

Yes I did thanks @LoveMyPianoAnyone can search my posting history and see I'm a genuine member.

Some of the replies are plain weird though. The person seeing no issue with a complete stranger telling me all that information, and I only recounted part of it. She told me she knew every conversation her neighbour had. She also asked about my personal life.

She moved in Wednesday morning, I met her then when I was going to work. I took her a card and flowers as a welcome on Thursday. I saw her on my doorstep last night about the TV and then again this morning when she kept repeating she just wants to be quiet, and then told me all this stuff.

But in the world of some Mumsnetters all that's absolutely fine and I'm the neighbour from hell. C'est la vie.

However weird or not this woman is, you must learn from her about how to behave with regards to noise disturbance. It can cause misery.

So I hope you will be quiet in the evenings from now and mindful of others around you.

LoveMyPiano · 03/10/2022 00:30

@ImJustMadAboutSaffron

I do believe you. It just (I mean in general, although your thread has been a prime example) seems so crazy how sharp and nasty - and wrong? - some people can be on here.

The warning signs are there - you have a odd one next door. Regardless of "your noise" (let's face it, she came round in her pyjamas....), she is not respecting boundaries and over-sharing to a ridiculous extent, which is in itself ominous.

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 03/10/2022 06:34

I'll try. I might need one of our smart alecs here to explain how to play music on my phone or use a pair of headphones. At 42 of course I struggle with all that new fangled stuff 😹😹
