To think faces look better without foundation?

I get covering acne, scarring, rosacea and things like that especially for confidence...but I think most women look far better without any foundation, which usually looks nice when first applied and then looks like a cloying mask...especially when the makeup is heavy.

I love wearing heavy makeup. I look v. theatrical 😁

I never wear foundation. I very occasionally wear a bit of pressed powder. I have scars on my face. Is it ok for me to not wear foundation or should I be covering my scars? Do my scars make me not look better without foundation. Foundation doesn't actually hide them completely and I absolutely don't need it for confidence.

nannybeach · 01/10/2022 09:35

Back in my teenage years it was "pan stick" thick and you applied to your lips as well I did make up courses, taught my DD how to apply, her friends used to say, she was lucky she doesn't need make up. Proper application and exact match, you cannot tell.

GreenGreenArse · 01/10/2022 09:35

same here Cheesus didn’t reapply makeup after lockdown unless I felt like it. It’s been great.

properdoughnut · 01/10/2022 09:42

Yup

Luckysantegelo, at what age would you suggest a womens skin needs Covering up, 18? 20? Not everyone looks better with foundation, what nonsense

@Angelinflipflops

not all 18 year olds have good skin. Stuff like uneven skin tone can effect any age. Foundation is literally designed to make the skin look better, just a fact 🤷‍♀️

AuntieMarys · 01/10/2022 09:49

I don't

Moonlightdust · 01/10/2022 09:51

Not if you get a good liquid foundation (doesn’t have to be the most expensive by any means), the right skin tone and blend properly. If done correctly you shouldn’t necessarily be able to tell you’re wearing it at all.

Moonlightdust · 01/10/2022 09:54

Applying a good moisturiser before makes a big difference too!

maddiesmam · 01/10/2022 10:12

Mine doesn't

HeadNorth · 01/10/2022 10:52

I think younger women can look beautiful and dramatic with the right make-up, but an older face usually looks better with less or no make up. Wrinkles are not ugly to me and usually look better without stuff on top of them. Make-up suits young, smooth faces in my view. Now I am older I think I look better without.

TheOGCCL · 01/10/2022 10:53

I agree with PPs that it can be hard to tell what make up is being worn on some people.

I’m a big believer in doing what makes you happy, in the context of understanding you have indeed been a bit manipulated by the beauty industry.

I think there can be a paradox where actual foundation (not tinted moisturisers etc) looks best on perfect skin. If you have lumps or lines or any kind of poor texture, it can emphasise those and also often not be that great for skin quality. It needs to be properly removed or it makes the skin worse leading to a catch 22.

It can be a dreadful product if it’s in any way the wrong shade or badly applied, always a bit grim to see it on collars and scarves. It can just sit there in the skin, oxidising as the day wears on. Many people don’t have the time or skills to apply it well, if you look at say a Lisa Eldridge video she’s there ages perfecting it.

I’d always recommend spending your money to sort your skin out not on expensive foundations.

I agree. I think the heavily caked look is awful.
I used to use a light foundation moisturiser thing but once mask wearing started I stopped. I wear a white and blue paper mask and didn’t want to get it covered in gunk - even barely there gunk.

Now I only wear moisturiser although eye shadow and so on I use as normal. I do use concealer though but very little.

I like the clean faced look and luckily my skin is delicate, without big bores or blemishes.

Signeduptosimplyreplytothis · 01/10/2022 11:07

People always assume I don't wear make up...until I don't wear make up then get asked constantly if I'm ok/unwell. So I'm all for make up personally

I don't think foundation looks very nice and I think it's a bit sad that women don't feel comfortable in their own skin. Each to their own though. I think the makeup industry has done a big number on women.

paintitallover · 01/10/2022 11:12

I agree. It just looks like an orange face, mostly.

paintitallover · 01/10/2022 11:13

(As dd once asked about loudly, when I met my boss's boss in John Lewis! )

KoalaCape · 01/10/2022 11:15

I can't say for everyone as there are many, many people who I've never seen without their make up on. However, for myself it's definitely 100% better without and I never wear foundation. I do like a bit of mascara so I'm not completely washed out 🤣

When I am spotty, I find that foundation or any type of cover up actually makes it look worse. However, I've seen some amazing make up on people who know how to do it right. My wedding make up was great because someone professional did it so maybe that is the secret to foundation looking lovely!

sicklycolleague · 01/10/2022 11:17

My boyfriend hates when I wear foundation and thinks I look odd, so I mostly don’t

I see this argument a lot, but how far do you take it? Should you also not invest in good skincare, nice clothing, or a decent haircut because it's all just superficial nonsense?

PorridgewithQuark · 01/10/2022 11:24

Hibernationsetting surely that cannot possibly be true - a bit like asserting that someone can't have seen many hatchbacks because there are a lot of SUVs or something else where both things mentioned are frequently seen.

Are you really asserting that almost every woman is wearing foundation every time they leave the house?

I have never worn foundation in my life and I'm nearly 50. It seems highly unlikely that I'm a mythical or rare beast 🤣 In fact I am sure that only two of my approximately 20 female colleagues wear foundation to work (it's a tidy jeans, trainers and a presentable top type occupation)…

TabithaTittlemouse · 01/10/2022 11:25

Depends on the face and the foundation. A good foundation applied well won’t be obvious so you are likely to think that they aren’t wearing any.

The majority of people do have something they are covering up- even if it’s just a bit of sun damage or uneven pigmentation. No one is held down and forced to wear it.
Wear it if you want to- I know plenty of people who don’t wear any. A few still have acne scarring- they just don’t care. Some have lovely skin- that they’ve spent a few grand having treatments done.
I usually wear make up and it is the exact colour as my skin- if I apply properly rather than slapping on😂. I don’t wear make up on holiday as it’s the only time I have a natural sunburnt glow.
Women put the pressure on eachother, I’ve yet to come across a man who cares if a woman is wearing make up and they often prefer them without.
