To think faces look better without foundation?

I get covering acne, scarring, rosacea and things like that especially for confidence...but I think most women look far better without any foundation, which usually looks nice when first applied and then looks like a cloying mask...especially when the makeup is heavy.

OP posts:

In most case, yes. Less is more, nothing worse than an over done face in the wrong tone.

TrashyPanda · 01/10/2022 08:44

IMO the heavy, orange-toned makeup with dark eyebrows doesn’t suit anybody.
presumably those who go for this look disagree with me.

a foundation which matches my skin tone makes me feel a lot better about my appearance. Lately I’ve been using Glossier Skin Tint, which I really like.

to each their own.

Jamaisy82 · 01/10/2022 08:45

If you have perfect skin yes. Unfortunately mine is terrible.

I think a lot depends on the quality of the foundation and the skill of the applier. My mother wears it every day, has done for 40 years, spends a fortune on lovely products, and looks phenomenal. I wear it once a year, spend a fiver at boots, and look like a French mime with a bad tan.

French mimer with a bad tan 🤣🤣

It's the wrong conversation, or rather, it's the surface layer. Go deeper. 'Looks better' is a comparative, and subjective. Better than what, compared to what? An ideal which values women and judges women based on how youthful, how sexy and how pleasing we are. To men.

That's the real conversation. You either buy into that premise or you don't. Most do; our society revolves around it. Even advocating against make-up using this language is staying within the paradigm. 🤷‍♀️

Noteverybodylives · 01/10/2022 08:49

I can’t usually tell if women are wearing foundation or not.
So you must be seeing the ones who apply it badly/ use the wrong colour.

Many of the women I know use moisturiser with a hint of foundation. So you can’t see it but it gives an even tone.

ScarlettSunset · 01/10/2022 08:50

My face definitely looks better with foundation.
I've never spent any time thinking about whether other women would look better with it or without it.

Cosmeticfan · 01/10/2022 08:51

I wear foundation at very least a concealer most days. On the days I don’t wear it, people ask me if I’m ok.

People frequently say what nice skin I have and I suspect most people would say that I’m not wearing make up. I just wear enough to balance out my skin tone and use a light reflecting powder on top for glow. It’s actually very subtle.

I’ve also got microbladed eyebrows but these are also very natural. If eyebrows come up in conversation and I mention it, people seem very surprised.

There’s a lot of very ‘natural’ looking people around who are not ‘natural’.

Peoplepissmeoff · 01/10/2022 08:52

Your opinion is valid, but I disagree. My face looks better with foundation.

KimberleyClark · 01/10/2022 08:52

I think my skin looks better without. I am fair skinned with a hint of pink but not pale. I’m 61. I had a professional make up done a couple of years back for a black tie do and was quite disappointed by it. Some people are transformed by make up, I notice when watching Strictly and see the celebs without make up, but I’m not one of them.

Calphurnia88 · 01/10/2022 08:52

In my 20s I looked better with foundation, but my skin was still healing from teenage acne.

In my 30s I look better with some strategically placed concealer, but my skin is a lot better than it was.

Chattycathydoll · 01/10/2022 08:52

I’d rather people think I’d look better without it, then know what I actually look like without it (because it isn’t better). Like reverse catfishing…

Looks better with make up. The majority of women do. Tbh.... I would be more concerned about the lip fillers and the endless botox people are having in their early 20s.

However I can't be stressing myself over others choices each to their if that's what they like....

CheesyColeslaw · 01/10/2022 08:55

I prefer my face without make up but I'm quite shit at applying it. Not sure why some posters think you rarely see women without foundation. I know loads of women who don't wear any make up day to day, myself included.

InCheesusWeTrust · 01/10/2022 08:56

I stopped recently. I now use good moisturiser, primer, bit of highligher and powder.
For whatever reason my foundation always ended up looking pretty meh in few hours ( i think it's skin type simply). Like this it looks good, covers minor uneveness and redness and makes my face sweat less

LuciferRising · 01/10/2022 08:57

Incrediblebuttrue · 01/10/2022 08:15

Really? I would think that most women don't wear foundation.

I don't get this either. Do people think women wear makeup as standard? Why? I know more people who don't wear makeup day to day than do. Yet on MN people say I'm wrong. Why the assumption we all want to wear the stuff?

I think we all should do as we please. I don't care if people think I'd look better with makeup (men are never judged for not wearing it).

LindseyHoyleSpeaks · 01/10/2022 08:59

Agree that the beauty industry has done a number on women. ‘Colour corrector’? Surely natural skin is the correct colour!

FrozenGhost · 01/10/2022 08:59

I wish OP was right but it's not what I've noticed in real life. I usually wear a light foundation, if I ever don't wear it, people ask me if I am tired, sick or sun burned.

Now whether it matters whether we "look good" is another question, and I'd say the answer is no. But thats a totally different question.

Lopilo · 01/10/2022 09:00

I’m slightly surprised people say that they can’t tell. I can tell exactly who wears it and who doesn’t. The vast majority of women wear it at my work at varying degrees of subtlety. I really like wearing make up, although I no longer wear foundation. I do think foundation can look really good.

GreenGreenArse · 01/10/2022 09:02

The beauty industry has really done a number on women, hasn't it? So much money, so much time, so much angst over whether we look good enough. There is no male equivalent.

100% this. Female faces not being good enough without time, effort and money being spent on them is sexist old crap and if someone looks at me and thinks I could ‘use some foundation’ that’s their problem not mine. Smile
Women don’t owe anything to anyone.

thefiddlerselbow · 01/10/2022 09:02

Mine doesn't

Angelinflipflops · 01/10/2022 09:04

I've never got on with foundation

PeloFondo · 01/10/2022 09:06

Well yes but sometimes I want to cover up the blue/purple under eye circles and the vein that runs under my eye as that's also blue
A corrector means less concealer needed
Day to day I'm not fussed but sometimes I don't want to look tired!

neverbeenskiing · 01/10/2022 09:06

My face definitely looks better without foundation. I've tried all different types, different methods of application, spent a fortune over the years but it just doesn't suit me. So now I invest in a good quality illuminating primer to give me a nice glow and even out my skin tone instead and wear that without foundation. But what others choose to do with their faces is up to them and it can look lovely on some people.

Thealarmhasgoneoffagain · 01/10/2022 09:07

I don't wear it much but I agree that if you can tell someone is wearing it, then it probably is because it's not very good. I know someone who wears horrendous foundation BUT she is happy with the effect it gives so who am I to judge?

I don't pay that much attention to men or women's skin tbh.
