To think faces look better without foundation?

JamSandle · 01/10/2022 07:52

I get covering acne, scarring, rosacea and things like that especially for confidence...but I think most women look far better without any foundation, which usually looks nice when first applied and then looks like a cloying mask...especially when the makeup is heavy.

The beauty industry has really done a number on women, hasn't it? So much money, so much time, so much angst over whether we look good enough. There is no male equivalent.

100% this. Female faces not being good enough without time, effort and money being spent on them is sexist old crap and if someone looks at me and thinks I could ‘use some foundation’ that’s their problem not mine. Smile
Women don’t owe anything to anyone.

No they don't, but that's a different point to whether it looks good. Something could look amazing and women/anyone still doesn't have to do it.

Icanstillrecallourlastsummer · 01/10/2022 09:08

I think it's a shame that its become so fashionable that young women are caking their faces in make up - despite havinglovely skin to start with - to achieve the kim kardashian contouring look. I also agree that it would be nice to have a more natural look become fashionable again.

As to whether foundation looks rubbish - sometimes yes. Close up you can see it on most people who wear a lot, people who fill their skin with layers and layers of foundation and powders are kidding themselves if they think it looks like "skin but better" close up in natural light. Although, of course, many people are very skilled at applying and it can look very nice (although, still not like real skin imo).

It's moving towards men too. The male make up is on rise.
Soon we will all be fucked

I don't understand why anyone would wash their face and then promptly slap mud all over it.

That's not Kardashian s fault fully. They just cake different products on to what we caked on before. Every generation has that few years with make up you need to scrape off

How obtuse of you

HRTQueen · 01/10/2022 09:14

no for everyone

I wear dewy foundation and my skin looks fresher with it on

i wear quite heavy black eyeliner lots of mascara and blusher and lipstick too

I love make up and the made up look

and I have red gel nails

I know I’m good enough it’s just a minuscule improvement to perfection 😆

It's the wrong conversation, or rather, it's the surface layer. Go deeper. 'Looks better' is a comparative, and subjective. Better than what, compared to what? An ideal which values women and judges women based on how youthful, how sexy and how pleasing we are. To men.

That's the real conversation. You either buy into that premise or you don't. Most do; our society revolves around it. Even advocating against make-up using this language is staying within the paradigm. 🤷‍♀️

Its not just to men though, is it? There are some characteristics of appearance that most people will agree looks 'better', which have nothing to do with wanting to fit an ideal of sexual attractiveness to men. Some are rooted in societal norms, and some are more inate than that.
Most people for example do not find spots pleasing because of the subconscious association with illness. The same as most people find a certain weight range pleasing because of the association with health.
Youth worship isn't just about what men supposedly want, sex and fertility.
Youth is also revered because it suggestss strength, health, physical prime, while visible aging can be a stark reminder of our decline and mortality.

Angelinflipflops · 01/10/2022 09:15

What is dewy foundation

GreenGreenArse · 01/10/2022 09:16

I’d say the same to men Cheesus
Its another pressure nobody needs. There’s enough actual shit that needs our energy, time and money to address each day. Unless this brings anyone actual joy, just don’t bother with it.

People might even be rude enough to comment if you look a bit different to normal but so what? It’s like when they say ‘oh you’ve had a haircut’ or ‘oh you’re not wearing your glasses’ and then they will literally never give it another thought.

I don't understand why anyone would wash their face and then promptly slap mud all over it.

Acne, acne scars, rosacea, pigmentation, broken capillaries... Or maybe they just prefer the way their skin looks with foundation.

There are a lot of reasons that people choose to wear makeup.

Not many people do this

BigOldGalaxy · 01/10/2022 09:17

I have good skin, but even then, mine looks a better with a touch of concealer under the eyes and blended on the face, bit of non glittery bronzer and a bit of blush. I look more even and well put together.

Some peoples foundation may look bad but most match the colour well and a dewy look is in atm which I love

InCheesusWeTrust · 01/10/2022 09:19

@GreenGreenArse i agree.

Interestingly I had absolutely zero negative comments after dropping foundation. Actually was told I am glowing (eith a suspicious eye brow raise). That eould be that vit c moisturiser thank you😂

Angelinflipflops · 01/10/2022 09:15

What is dewy foundation

It’s a lighter foundation but you can build it up foe a heavier coverage

its not matt or powdery and gives a more natural finish (if the right colour)

SilverGlassHare · 01/10/2022 09:21

I remember a more observant friend of a then boyfriend commenting to him ‘Silver is so good at putting making up on’ and my ex-boyfriend replying ‘Silver never wears make up!’. Wrong of course. I wear make up, I just go for a natural look. You’re just not looking closely enough, OP.

Bunnycat101 · 01/10/2022 09:22

I think there is a difference between makeup for photos and real life. Often people do look much better in photos with very heavy makeup but on a day to day basis I think natural will look better than badly applied, orange foundation.

QuizzlyBears · 01/10/2022 09:23

I sometimes look at people and wonder why they’re not wearing some sort of foundation or BB cream. Each to their own, not sure why you were bothered enough about it to start a whole thread.

LemonMuffins · 01/10/2022 09:25

Some people might look better. I don't. I have terrible skin.

ManateeFair · 01/10/2022 09:27

It’s always people who know jack-shit about makeup who spout this kind of sneery guff.

OP, I have to break it to you that don’t have a clue whether most women you see are wearing foundation or not. You only notice it when it’s heavy or unmatched. In any case, bitching about other women’s faces is a far worse look than any kind of makeup, so pipe down.

Just to pass on some info about makeup for those interested in learning more about it.

on Instagram Bethany Frankel of Real Housewives of New York fame is doing a whole series of posts about makeup. What’s worth it. What’s not. Tests it all on herself on camera. The cheap stuff and the expensive stuff. She doesn’t get paid for doing this apparently, so it seems that her critiques of what’s good, what’s not etc., are pretty honest.

Angelinflipflops · 01/10/2022 09:32

Luckysantegelo, at what age would you suggest a womens skin needs Covering up, 18? 20? Not everyone looks better with foundation, what nonsense
