To think faces look better without foundation?

I get covering acne, scarring, rosacea and things like that especially for confidence...but I think most women look far better without any foundation, which usually looks nice when first applied and then looks like a cloying mask...especially when the makeup is heavy.

Very few people. You need to have good skin to pull the no make look off.

Most people look better with make up. I'm not blessed like that so it Kat von D for me

GaspingGekko · 01/10/2022 08:12

I'm not in the UK often, but over the summer I visited and was shocked at how much make-up the majority of women were wearing. It seems to be significantly more than I remember.

Thing is we don't look at men and think they look terrible for not covering their natural faces. Women's skin doesn't look worse than men's, we've just got used to faces with foundation on.
I think a lot of people have just become accustomed to how women look with foundation on and now find that natural.

To be honest I find it sad that so many women feel so insecure or conscious about their face that they have to cover it.

J0y · 01/10/2022 08:12

Yes absolutely, I want the choice too. I ignore most of it, and feel like most of it is a trend that applies to much younger women, the huge eye lashes. I've never in my life had my eyebrows done in a salon. Most of it makes me shrug so if I can shrug so easily, I don't think the beauty industry has ''done a number'' on me personally, with my rimmel foundation and mascara.

shedwithivy · 01/10/2022 08:13

I'd like to know what these online ladies who do make up tutorials look like in real life - the ones who put all different shades and contours on with a sponge and look airbrushed... would it look good in natural light...? very curious.

I have tried to deter my daughters from ruining good young skin with too much make up. Also getting to the stage where you can't go out without it.

As my skin has aged and settled into being less oily/spotty, I find a tinted moisturiser with a bit of foundation stick under eyes and t zone, and a bit of mineral powder really lifts my face and evens out the colour.

I Probably looked worse when my skin was more awkward and I'd use make up to try to hide it.

J0y · 01/10/2022 08:14

@GaspingGekko I do look at men and think they look terrible. Quite often. I work in a job where I'd have people's data in front of me and although it may be very unprofessional of me, often my perception of somebody is that they're an old man and then they turn out to be my age or only a bit older (52)

I suspect you actually probably haven’t seen that many women without foundation. Those who look like they aren’t have probably spent hours perfecting their minimal natural look.

Really? I would think that most women don't wear foundation.

Oh mumsnet...what a weird and hostile bunch at a simple and subjective observation 🤣

Why, because not everyone agrees with you

5128gap · 01/10/2022 08:18

I look awful in it. Just as you describe, kind of grubby, and older too.
However, I assume that's because I'm doing it wrong. I imagine it's a bit like filler and botox, people who think it looks awful are talking about badly done, visible, over the top versions. I expect if done skillfully it enhances subtly and you'd barely notice it.

picklemewalnuts · 01/10/2022 08:18

I like the way I look with almost bare skin. Magic eraser on my chin and eyelids makes a great difference. If I use more, it looks all kinds of wrong.

I'm all about lipstick and eyeliner though. I love that!

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 01/10/2022 08:21

I think everyone tends to look better with a little bit of makeup. I don't wear it very often anymore as I want to be comfortable in my own face and not feel like it's unfinished and needs to be enhanced. I do wear make up now and then and I feel like I look completely different now!

ThinkingForEveryone · 01/10/2022 08:21

I use cheap make up (I feel like I've treated myself if I stretch the budget to some No7!) I would rather wear something than go bare faced but that is my preference. I am reasonably skilled at applying makeup and cheap or not it makes me look 'well'.
OP's preferences around what I put on my face won't change anything for me....perhaps if I bump into her one day I might even think she has a face that could do with a bit of foundation 🙂

transformandriseup · 01/10/2022 08:23

It's not for me but I get that others like it.

AloysiusBear · 01/10/2022 08:23

Yanbu i don't like it. There's nothing wrong with the uneven tone of natural skin. I understand people with damaged skin eg acne being keen to cover it but if your skin is healthy i don't quite get it. If you have dark circles etc drink more water and get more sleep and eat better

MigsandTiggs · 01/10/2022 08:24

This is how I use foundation after a tip on how to recreate the South Korean perfect skin look. On back of your hand mix small dabs of illuminator, serum, moisturiser and foundation together. Apply with a fan brush. The effect is of a light healthy glow and you can use cheap Boots products.

AloysiusBear · 01/10/2022 08:25

I do notice however that most women i know who wear it look fabulous in photos, but in real life even when applied perfectly, its still very obvious its on your skin.

Namechanger355 · 01/10/2022 08:26

YABU - not ALL faces look better without as your post implies

Some faces look better with foundation. Some will not

with years of acne behind me my skin certainly does not

MrsClatterbuck · 01/10/2022 08:27

Iamnewhere · 01/10/2022 07:59

I prefer how I look with foundation when a professional puts it on and it's first applied. After a few hours I always go cakey and feel quite self conscious.
I've tried everything (diff application, diff brands etc). If anyone has any tips let me know 🤣

I use Pur 4 on 1 mineral powder which never cakes on me. Use a little or more depending on the look you want. Was a game changer for me.
Have only seen it in M & S. I usually buy it online now I know the shade I want and when there's an offer.

AloysiusBear · 01/10/2022 08:27

The effect is of a light healthy glow and you can use cheap Boots products.

Other ways to achieve a light healthy glow:

  • get outside for a walk or bike ride
  • tickle your kids until you are all laughing
  • have a good shag

The thing about a true "healthy glow" is makeup only makes you look like you have it in photos

ThinkingForEveryone · 01/10/2022 08:28

@AloysiusBear love the idea of getting more sleep.....if you could just increase the current 24 hour day for me to approx 28 hours that would be perfect.
Other than that I'll stick with my products 😊

user1487194234 · 01/10/2022 08:28

I can assure you mine doesn’t 🤣

Given that it's the rare man who ventures out of the house in makeup, we could rewrite this post:

Very few women look good without makeup. Women need to have good skin to pull off a no-makeup look. Most women look better with makeup.

And that sounds awful, doesn't it? It sounds like men are fine as they are, but women's faces need fixing because they can't 'pull off' what men do each and every day, without a second thought.

Women should do with their faces what they please. I love me a tinted moisturiser. But women don't make these decisions without societal pressure and disapproval and a good dash of learned self-loathing.

miltonj · 01/10/2022 08:32

Mine doesn't. I'm extremely pale with dark circles. I look Ill most of the time! I'm not saying that to put myself down and I can't care that much because 9 times out of 10, I don't wear it. But I definitely look better with it.

nobird · 01/10/2022 08:32

My skin is far from perfect but I still prefer no foundation. I use a bit of tinted moisturiser or BB or CC cream and concealer to disguise some hyperpigmentation but that’s it really.

I honestly can’t tell whether other people are wearing foundation unless it’s very obviously the wrong tone or badly applied.

Realityloom · 01/10/2022 08:35

@WillPowerLite let's not make this something it is not. What OP is claiming is a bit wild. If you can't see weather someone has foundation on.... you clearly aren't paying attention.

Goatinthegarden · 01/10/2022 08:36

Wearing foundation made my skin spotty and grey, so it was a vicious cycle of having to wear foundation because my natural skin was being ruined by wearing make up.

I stopped wearing it. I now eat well, go to bed earlier, exercise outdoors (with spf50) and drink lots of water. Might be coincidence, but my skin has never looked healthier. It’s clear and even.

I still look like a different person in foundation though, so whether I look better or not without is down to personal taste I guess. I certainly prefer not bothering with it.
