Jack Monroe off Twitter

1000 replies

beammeuphottie · 28/09/2022 20:28

The latest in the ongoing saga is that JM has left Twitter after being 'hounded off'. The incident that seemed to provoke this...someone critiquing a photo of her mums roast potatoes. It just gets more and more bizarre.

To be clear, I don't like to see public pile ons and some of the abuse directed at Jack has been unpleasant. But a lot has also been reasonable, polite requests for information regarding her patreon which have largely been totally ignored. And her supporters have to be some of the most cruel people on Twitter. It seems like it's fine for JM to voice her opinion but as soon as others do the same they are called out for bullying. And ironically subjected to vile comments from her followers. Go figure.

Am I the only one who thinks she's probably best having a little Twitter break? But eventually if she's ever to redeem her reputation she needs to show some transparency regarding public donations.

I'd imagine a big chunk of the British public have at least one immigrant great-grandparent.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 29/09/2022 12:51

I think she claimed to have been a sex worker at one point too.

potniatheron · 29/09/2022 12:53

I'm sure she'll be back, she loves Twitter. I used to follow her but had to stop as it was hundreds of tweets a day. always a new drama. She was asking people for money at the start of lockdown because she had speaking gigs cancelled, I thought that was a bit much, this was before furlough so we were all worried! I appreciate she raises a lot of money for people who are struggling but she seems to centre herslef so much that the message is lost sometimes

FKATondelayo · 29/09/2022 12:56

I listened to a sneak peek of the podcast on Spotify and I am gutted I'm not a subscriber. It sounded very snarky.

If anyone is interested, ‘Blocked and Reported’ have released a podcast episode on this very subject this morning.

Thank you. That looks like a fun podcast and I've been looking for a new one for ages. Can listen to the whole of the JM one because it's a premium episode.

I bet loads of you have 'Be Kind' in your social media profiles as well

Fuck no, I abhor the "be kind" brigade.

Me too. I am teaching my daughters to say NO. Be kind is doing so much damage, especially to our daughters who are being told their feelings and boundaries do not matter.

ChocChipOwl · 29/09/2022 14:55

It's such a strange thing and I can't make my mind up about it

She's like a Walter Mitty type character. Clearly bright and clever yet couldn't lie straight in bed.

I've had 'dealings' with Jack and she's very hard work and very quick to take offence at not much at all.

And I think the 'evidence' is pretty much irrefutable. It's there in black and white as it's all been penned by her own hand

Of COURSE she hasn't spent the past two years melting down soap to make shower gel. Do I believe she melted down a few old bars as an experiment? Yes, because I recall her talking about it.

And her food is just utterly joyless.

Indeed… I’m genuinely shocked at those saying they like her recipes, as they look like the work of people who don’t understand food, and don’t actually enjoy food, to me.

Does she though? I mean she talks a good game and gives the impression she's raising loads of money but is there any actual evidence of this available? Does anyone know?

She claims to have donated 1000’s of her books to food banks. In reality she asked people to pay her (full RRP) for her books, and she’d donate the copy they’d paid for to the food bank. So she made a profit from them.

ChocChipOwl · 29/09/2022 15:12

@WaddleAway and where are these books? Where is the proof that thousands of copies were given away at food banks on her behalf - or rather, on behalf of those who'd kindly sponsored a copy?

WilmaFlintstone1 · 29/09/2022 15:16

She’s a narcissist, I have watched her for several years and she’s very very hard work. People are also now asking her to be transparent about the money she has raised and she obviously cannot do this as it’s likely she has creamed a load of it off. It all went into her bank account and when she raised money for her “court case” a few months back she put her private PayPal up. When it was gently pointed out that a GoFund me page would be more transparent she was snarling and sniping back.

No sympathy whatsoever for her, you reap what you sow.

It looks like some bigger names are now writing about her.and she is in a full on narc rage. The potatoes were an easy thing to flip out over…despite the fact she herself has posted images of other peoples food and criticised. She can dish it out but not take it.

Narc personified that one.

WilmaFlintstone1 · 29/09/2022 15:17

According to a phone In she did today, you can add stock to burgers and blend them to make soup.

Dont all rush at once now!

I'm a subscriber and it's worth paying $5 for a month's sub to listen to it. As they're Americans, they don't get some of the class nuance but they really expose the grift in a really funny way.

InFiveMins · 29/09/2022 15:35

I suspect she may have spent the money that was raised for charity, sadly. Otherwise she would have cleared her name a long time ago. Whenever she's questioned she becomes nasty and vicious which also makes me suspicious that she has something to hide.

How can a person realistically keep track of donations for a specific thing (legal action, with a pledge to donate if not required) if it goes into the same pot as your "tips" (an additional income stream for yourself)?

I imagine this will be a convenient excuse and something she promises to learn from, should she be forced to apologize.

ChocChipOwl · 29/09/2022 15:46

This has been going on for many years now and she's the author - quite literally - of all of it.

I suspect she will coast through this as well.

That's troubling, if true. My assumption has always been that she is a spokesperson for foodbanks and the proceeds of her books go to them.

I would have assumed she is regulated by whoever regulates charities to make sure she uses the money she raises for such purposes.

Oblomov22 · 29/09/2022 15:56

She just flounces but will be back because she craves the attention.
Those roast potatoes do not look good.

Or ... use the bread roll you could use to dip in the soup, to sandwich the patty and just have a burger Confused

Bizarre

Possibly a bit laborious but surely it's just bookkeeping? Which, if you want to be transparent is helpful to do

Not when collecting as a private individual - the laws on fundraising transparency, applying gift aid, etc, don't apply then. It's why the official advice is never to donate to an individual or business compared to an official charity fundraising page with clearly displayed charity number, etc. There's just no way of knowing that the fifty quid you PayPal Nigel in accounts or buy a tshirt with through Sarah's 'proceeds will be donated to charities' promise will go to help orphaned kittens or will end up buying Nigel's latest iPhone, Sarah's brand new Labrascoodlepo or her and her best mate 1g of marching powder each for a Satursay night.

That's interesting. I've genuinely never thought about this. I either donate to registered charities or I give money to people I know well and trust. I guess I just assume that if someone in the public eye is soliciting donations, then they'll go to charity.

Didn't something similar happen with Captain Tom during Covid now that I think about it.

Surely that is a big loophole though, the one about private individuals collecting donations. Why wouldn't the charoty regulator step in and ensure that the money was going to where it had been pormised?

Naunet · 29/09/2022 16:40

Absolutely grifter, can’t believe there’s still people falling for it.
