Jack Monroe off Twitter

beammeuphottie · 28/09/2022 20:28

The latest in the ongoing saga is that JM has left Twitter after being 'hounded off'. The incident that seemed to provoke this...someone critiquing a photo of her mums roast potatoes. It just gets more and more bizarre.

To be clear, I don't like to see public pile ons and some of the abuse directed at Jack has been unpleasant. But a lot has also been reasonable, polite requests for information regarding her patreon which have largely been totally ignored. And her supporters have to be some of the most cruel people on Twitter. It seems like it's fine for JM to voice her opinion but as soon as others do the same they are called out for bullying. And ironically subjected to vile comments from her followers. Go figure.

Am I the only one who thinks she's probably best having a little Twitter break? But eventually if she's ever to redeem her reputation she needs to show some transparency regarding public donations.

Is Patreon regulated at all or do people sign up without 'creators' being under any obligation to provide the promised content? It does seem as though she' been unethical in her dealings as far as that goes.

How can you ask a question about how it works then say she’s been unethical?

She didnt ask how it worked, she asked if it was regulated. Is there anyon actually making sure that creators provide what they promise in exchange for donations. Jack has been unethical. She hasn't been providing what she committed to but she still takes the money.

It’s not regulated. However when she set it up she said explicitly ‘this is not a donation service’ and listed all the rewards she was going to provide. She last sent anything in November 2020 and is ignoring all messages in the Patreon community system, and ignoring anyone requesting updates via Twitter. Someone recently offered to send out her unfulfilled materials and to pay postage themselves as a donation and she ignored that too.

The premise is that creators have tiers, the more expensive, the more “things” on offer.

If you want a refund as you’ve not received anything, you have to contact the creator.

She has ignored messages on Pateon, emails, blocks anyone on Twitter (if they’re lucky, half the time she sets her followers on them).

Its been TWO YEARS since anyone received anything. The whole idea behind it is to support creators and also get something for your money, it’s not a fucking charity jar.

It’s also very difficult to cancel subs on Patreon - I’ve tried a few times, with different creators, it’s around 8 pages to click through, it’ll say cancelled, it’ll be gone from your Active Subs, then next billing cycle the fucking money has gone out again. Patreon won’t refund, even when you send screenshots of the cancellation. They tell you to message the creator. Luckily for me, after sending the creator the screenshots, I’ve been refunded. Then I’ve cancelled again, guess what? Next billing cycle, same shit happens again.

@knittingaddict

Page 2 of this thread a couple of posts down.

Hmm, not good. Her mum should par boil and shake those tatties around a bit. They need dripping and a very hot oven and some rough surfaces to crisp up.

As for those yorkies, words fail me.

WaddleAway · 28/09/2022 22:26

Just to point out it’s really easy for a creator to suspend their patreon (ie stop receiving donations) if they’re unable to fulfil their obligations for any reason. I subscribe to one who has done this a few times when they’ve been too busy to create the content, or have had things going on etc. Jack has chosen to keep receiving the money regardless.

Oh dear.

Because, she may be within her rights not to provide any content to subscribers (hence my question as to whether it's regulated) but even if that is the case it's, in my opinion, unethical to accept people's monthly subs and not provide the promised content.

Hope that's clear enough for you.

Pretty shitty behaviour in that case.

Seems the ideal platform for grifters.

What's the verdict on the yorkies?

Mass-produced.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 28/09/2022 22:38

Those yorkshires are shameful! Why are they flat?

The horror... The horror...

VittysCardigan · 28/09/2022 22:39

Slightly off point, why would you make shower gel from soap? Why not just use the soap as soap?

Tombero · 28/09/2022 22:47

I have no idea how she’s managed to convince so many people she’s a force for good and that she actively helps people. She promises a lot and rarely follows through or delivers. Every interview seems to focus on her and a brief period of self imposed financial difficulty a decade ago. I don’t doubt for one moment that her family would have helped her through it if they knew. Her £20 shops encourage a belief that it should be possible to live like that when it isn’t.

Her patreon offered a return and it would appear she hasn’t fulfilled what she offered. She hasn’t been transparent about some of her charity donations. Her pay pal, tip jar and hunger hurts blogs will have likely led to donations from some who could ill afford it She hasn’t responded to these allegations even though she appears to patrol and rampage her way across twitter shouting about everything else and encouraging pile ons from her supporters.

I don’t doubt that she has mental health issues and there are a few people on twitter who seem to bang on about her relentlessly. But a lot of people seem to be raising very valid concerns which she’ll need to address to retain her platform.

I hope that she is reflecting and has support around her. However, I fear she will just be angry and return with a classic DARVO response.

OliverBabish · 28/09/2022 22:51

Yikes that blog post is pretty convincing

I do like a couple of her recipes though

Exactly. It’s all a performance. And it’s harmful to rhisegenuinely struggling to make ends meet.
Her ‘it’s easy to feed a family of 3 on £20 a week’ rhetoric is true Tory too. She’s playing into their hands.

DismantledKing · 28/09/2022 22:53

I agree with Tombero

Rantypanties · 28/09/2022 23:04

Her followers are some of the nastiest people I’ve seen on Twitter. She encourages the behaviour and now she’s seeing what it’s like on the other side. I don’t think she’s ill, I think she’s just an abusive narc.

Gluten free ones out of a packet and needed to actually be put in the bin the oven instead of tipped out the packet and photographed.

whynotwhatknot · 29/09/2022 00:23

lots of posts on twitter about her patreon how she ignores messages but still takes money and noone seems to do anyting about it

TrashPandas · 29/09/2022 00:26

Both the potatoes and Yorkshires look undercooked and a bit sad.

GyozaGuiting · 29/09/2022 06:35

I think she’s done some great work and her heart is probably in the right place but I don’t get the ‘I work 100+ hours a week but I can’t afford rent’, and doing what exactly?

KitBumbleB · 29/09/2022 06:57

I think what riled a lot of people is the near constant lies and contradictions that are so easily spotted because Jack herself puts them out there. Its not like you have to do a deep dive investigation, its all right there.

Claiming she lives in a damp and shitty bungalow and that she can't leave because she is locked in a contract and she does own a tv and pays 90% of her income on rent (all her own words, slightly paraphrased)

Then people found...tweets that the delivery company left her TV on the doorstep (before she said she doesn't have one) tweets that she is on a rolling contract not locked in, tweets that seven members of her staff that she usually pays from her own pocket and usually work from her house (the damp one remember) cant work during covid and she cant afford to pay them (how could she anyway when 90% of her money goes on rent)

Claiming she can't afford shampoo and then posting on Mrs Gloss FB page that she just dyed her hair and a list of all the products she bought.

Claiming poverty and then buying an expensive type dog.

Claiming to have found her designer clothes "in a puddle"

Claiming to be a struggling mum but she is the NRP.

I do genuinely think Jack had mental health problems, she clearly cant stick to a budget and clearly acts on impulse, however its believed that she self identifies as autistic and has never beeb diagnosed.

She also had a brief spell of claiming to be trans before changing her mind.

So, potatoes do look dire, need more time to crisp up.

Also, claiming poverty on twitter then off to Greece on Insta, complete with new hair do

GoldenGorilla · 29/09/2022 07:27

I saw a tweet from her recently claiming that people don’t like her because she’s “a third generation immigrant” - as I understand it, one or more of her great grandparents came from Greece. Prince Philip came from Greece, and his great-grandchildren don’t seem to be facing racism.

she’s clearly unwell, but jumping on every possible bandwagon of victimhood isn’t helping her.

WaddleAway · 29/09/2022 09:43

If anyone is interested, ‘Blocked and Reported’ have released a podcast episode on this very subject this morning.

They look inherently disappointing. If she thinks they're good, that's sad she's never had proper ones 😁👍
