Jack Monroe off Twitter

The latest in the ongoing saga is that JM has left Twitter after being 'hounded off'. The incident that seemed to provoke this...someone critiquing a photo of her mums roast potatoes. It just gets more and more bizarre.

To be clear, I don't like to see public pile ons and some of the abuse directed at Jack has been unpleasant. But a lot has also been reasonable, polite requests for information regarding her patreon which have largely been totally ignored. And her supporters have to be some of the most cruel people on Twitter. It seems like it's fine for JM to voice her opinion but as soon as others do the same they are called out for bullying. And ironically subjected to vile comments from her followers. Go figure.

Am I the only one who thinks she's probably best having a little Twitter break? But eventually if she's ever to redeem her reputation she needs to show some transparency regarding public donations.

Only if every donor has explicitly said "this money is for suing Lee Anderson" with each donation. Otherwise you're not going to know why it was given, because you have your tipjar open all the time, receiving donations all the time.

Obviously you can reasonably assume a rush of donations is connected to a particular post, but you'll also have other donations coming in for other reasons.

It's a daft & chaotic (and shady if you're cynical) way to fundraise for something specific, especially if you've said you'll donate the money raised if it's not needed.

Just had a look at some of the responses to her leaving Twitter, on Twitter. Lots of 'poor Jack!" and 'she does SO much for the poor' etc, there are some truly stupid gullible people out there.

This shows how much Jack estimated earnings are from Patreon. Whether she's suffering from addiction, MH it's no excuse, she has capacity and understands what is right and wrong.

TBH the majority of our race are caught by greed, it's why there's so much corruption in our world. People usually have a price, they just don't want to openly admit it, for some it's a slow gradual process.....others it was predominantly present right at the start. Religion is used as a shield to justify or excuse actions by some, or social causes as a cloak covering peoples true aim and personal goals.

One day we'll realise we've royally mucked our chances up with the lack of empathy and respect we have for eachother. well......some of us and Jack is one of them.

Even if she calculated what she owes, paid it back, it's too late for many who previously thought she was different.

Her posts in the last few weeks have been truly baffling.

Straight on the back of her 'melting soup & selling all my possessions' posts, she went swiftly to giving keynote addresses at some Google think-in & endless photos of luxury accommodation; when the Queen died she talked about 'all the times' she had met her (has she? More than once); the contradictory posts about her income & bookings just came out, one after another.

She also started to respond to critics & those asking questions but very selectively but even then had very weak replies.

It's really baffling to see what she's still getting away with. I watched some of an interview with her at Edinburgh Book Festival. It was awful, in person she stumbles & is really inarticulate & very hard to follow, compared to her writing. It's amazing she keeps being asked to speak / do interviews.

And eg a Google summit / think in - there's no way she wasn't getting a whopping fee for that.

It's nauseating to read.

As for Twitter, she regularly does this, just as she deletes tweets daily & claims she never said things in the first place.

I believe that people have reported her T-shirt fundraiser to Action Fraud since she promised transparency and then refused to say how much was earned or where the money went.

I agree about never giving money to individuals on behalf of a charity unless you know and trust them.

No, that's not true for me, I do want her hounded off working class platforms, if she isn't actually that background.

Opportunities for wc women shouldn't be grabbed by poseurs.

Agree that she’s given a voice and platform that she doesn’t deserve. There are so many genuine working class women who would use that platform for far more good than Jack does (she mainly uses Twitter to post inedible recipes, snark and people and over share).

Oh and to beg for cash.

Example - she gave the Catherine Cookson lecture (which is supposed to be a celebration of the voices of working class women writers). So yeah, there are platforms or roles intended to give wc women opportunities. That is a proper pisser for someone who has told the government in a speech she was a middle class woman who fell on hard times and wasn't like the Jeremy Kyle watching lower class masses. 🙄

If i could edit that last sentence it would have "..proper pisser that the opportunity went to someone who has told the government.."

I think the people booking her for events need to do some due diligence around the people they are platforming.
