AIBU?

And now Italy

Pampapuddlepoose · 26/09/2022 15:43

Italy has just voted in it's most right wing prime minister since Muesli.

IANBU - This whole thing is starting to look scarily like the build up to WW2
AIBU - Stop worrying and go and do something useful.

I'm going to stop reading/watching the news. It's scaring me and I can't fk anything about if anyway. I'm not trying to scaremongering, I'd just like some other opinions.

OP posts:

Am I being unreasonable?

465 votes. Final results.

I want to say you're being unreasonable but honestly we're living through pretty worrying times just now.

CamillasToe · 26/09/2022 16:08

Personally I'm not too concerned about what's happening in Italy - no party seems to stay in power for long there. There have been 76 governments in the last 70 years.

Lavendersummer · 26/09/2022 16:13

She’s really not that right wing. It’s scaremongering in the press. Italians wanted a change and so they voted.

RJnomore1 · 26/09/2022 16:14

Well your autocorrect gave me a brief smile but you do have to wonder where peoples brains are really.

purpliee · 26/09/2022 16:15

Ah Muesli. It's got my vote. As long as there's no raisins in it. 🤢

Twawmyarse · 26/09/2022 16:21

Why do you think right wing government = war? Our last war was against Iraq under a Labour government!
Same in the US -Trump called time on US troops fighting over there and pulled them out -it was the democrats who were the war-mongerers.

TooManyMoronsHere · 26/09/2022 16:32

YABU. Get a grip

CaptainBarbosa · 26/09/2022 16:32

Italy have become Eurosceptic. Brexit was always going to make other countries re-think their position in the bloc. This party wanted that conversation, and they won.

Issue is the war in Ukraine on European soil, no country can really afford to get involved in it all, and not just arm Ukraine, accept the humanitarian crisis that comes along with it.

I can't see Italy staying in the EU, I think they will Itexit 😂

Noorandapples · 26/09/2022 16:48

I think what makes her right wing is her anti immigration stance, right? Unfortunately that's going to get more popular across the board with more people fleeing war, floods etc and uncertainty with energy and food shortages. Countries will start panicking and close up very soon.

I agree it will put pressure on borders

Aus is interesting as it’s a Labor gov with same border control. So you can shift domestically at the same time but I can’t see this going the other way over time

onmywayamarillo · 26/09/2022 16:53

Since the queen died.. they need to whip up a frenzy of media storms to keep all those journalists in work.

Turn off the news and live a happy life

maranella · 26/09/2022 16:53

I'd be a lot more worried about what's happening with sterling, if I were you. What government Italy has really doesn't make much difference and they change government about once every 18 months, so I don't suppose it will last anyway.

MarshaBradyo · 26/09/2022 16:54

Btw I voted yabu as I wouldn’t stress to the extent you are op

I think it’s more the party’s views on “traditional” family and “reviewing rights” for the LGBTQ+ community in Italy that indicates the far right ethos of the party.

Various European countries are always teetering on the edge.

BMW6 · 26/09/2022 17:08

Why like the build up to WW2 OP?

Is Italy about to invade someone? Made other political parties illegal? Stopped a religious minority from operating a business?

Bring against UNCONTROLLED immigration is not unreasonable nor immoral. Certainly not "right wing". 🙄

HRTQueen · 26/09/2022 17:08

Not shocked by this in Italy

but Sweden

once people feel under valued, under paid, ignored by their governments it only takes someone to come along and listen and be on their side we have seen this time and time again do politicians never learn

MervynPumpkinhead · 26/09/2022 17:09

Would you be so worried if it was the most left wing PM ever, or would that not concern you as it would be more in line with your political leanings?

LetMeSpeak · 26/09/2022 17:11

I’m a lefty I saw a speech from her and she didn’t sound extremely right wing. She came across as more populist to me.

Im not worried at all. Italy is in a different situation to us.

Scianel · 26/09/2022 17:14

I'm not massively surprised. They had a shit old pandemic and Draghi was hugely unpopular.
