Would you expect to pay for child

Would you expect to pay for 5.5 year old if pricing is

0-5 free
6-17 £25

I was charged and told under 5s are free and as 5.5 years old I have to pay!

OP posts:
ARoyalSubject · 22/09/2022 09:49

Their written sign completely contradicts what the person in the ticket office told you.

It clearly says that anyone aged 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 is free, and anyone aged 6, 7 or more is chargeable.

I would have refused to pay for a 5 year old, and asked to speak to the manager.

They need to change their sign if 5 year olds are expected to pay, because that's not what is says.

Gazelda · 22/09/2022 09:59

Sadly, I think that dentists are under so much pressure these days that customer service doesn't seem to factor as part of their job spec.

In my very recent experience, with 2 different practices, the team come across as doing you a favour by offering to treat you. Forgetting that the patient is a customer.

As I said, I acknowledge the pressure they are under. The years spent qualifying. The dire shortage of NHS practitioners. And the invaluable treatment they give.

fucap · 22/09/2022 10:59

The dentist probably knows nothing about this. It will have been the practice manager or the receptionist who issued the bill.
I would go back in and complain and show the manager what it says on the website and hopefully they can understand what 0-5 free means, 6-17 pays. Though having seen how many people on here aren't able to understand this, wouldn't be surprised if they don't understand it either and that's how the OP ended up getting charged.
It needs clearing up anyway because it's not fair for people to think their five year old is free and choosing the dentist based on that and then finding they do have to pay. The website needs to be changed if the practice wish to charge 5 year olds and if in fact, they are free and the website is correct, then the staff need to be brought up to speed on the fact a 5 year old is 5 until their 6th birthday.

Zilla1 · 22/09/2022 18:39

I blame the five year old.

BadNomad · 22/09/2022 19:23

If their policy is "under 5s are free" then their price list is wrong.

(But, if you are that pregnant cruise lady, you are probably reading it wrong.)

Dahliasandtea · 22/09/2022 19:25

No no no no no. Forget the 0-5, it CLEARLY says that 6 is the age that payment starts. So basically up until midnight the day before his 6th birthday, it’s free. Go get a refund and don’t let anyone con you like this again. Grrrrrr.

AndJustLikeThis · 22/09/2022 19:40

If 5YOs are expected to pay, the pricing should have read;

Under 5s free.
5 - 17 years £25.

I work in a visitor attraction and I know it has to be crystal clear to save any confusion or embarrassment.

Looking at the wording on OP, I would not have expected to pay until the child was 6. Why a half comes into is baffling. They have left it open to interpretation/dispute.

ABBAsnumberonefan · 22/09/2022 20:03

It says under 5 not 5 and below

NippyWoowoo · 22/09/2022 20:05

ABBAsnumberonefan · 22/09/2022 20:03

It says under 5 not 5 and below

What?

ABBAsnumberonefan · 22/09/2022 20:06

NippyWoowoo · 22/09/2022 20:05

What?

5 is not under 5 it’s 5? So it’s not below 5. That’s how I’m understanding it although I’m confused by everyone talking about the wording on the website where was that wrote on the thread

Mollymoostoo · 22/09/2022 20:08

misskatamari · 21/09/2022 12:21

No, you shouldn't have paid if that was their pricing structure. They need to change how it's presented if they want a five year old to be laid for

Exactly. This doesn't say under 5, it says 0-5 which is inclusive of 5 year olds. They need to change their structure and clearly state under 5 and 5-16.
I would say you are taking it up with trading standards.

VioletInsolence · 22/09/2022 20:19

I’d expect the sign to make sense. It doesn’t make sense so what’s the point in discussing it?

Blueink · 22/09/2022 20:22

No, because according to the pricing structure it’s free until their 6th birthday

Blueink · 22/09/2022 20:29

The sign is clear IMO, but you were charged due to human error. Ask for a refund.

Greenshed · 22/09/2022 20:35

If it says clearly 0- 5 years free, 6 - 17 years £25 and your child is under 6, then whoever charged you is incorrect. Go back and challenge them - they are wrong to charge you when your child is not yet 6.
I’m not the best with maths, but my understanding is that 5 1/2 is under 6!!

Skodacool · 22/09/2022 20:39

Unicorn717 · 21/09/2022 11:56

I get this, but then pricing doesn't start til 6? So there's a year missing on their payment system.

There isn’t a year missing. A 5 year old doesn’t pay; a 6 year old does.

Marmite17 · 22/09/2022 20:41

Lesserspotteddogfish · 21/09/2022 17:06

It is clear. The OP doesn’t say 5-17, it says 6-17, so clearly she should not have been charged for a 5 year old.

She shouldn't have been charged.

Greenshed · 22/09/2022 20:43

Private dentist or not, their pricing list clearly states 0 - 5 years free, 6 - 17 £25.
The child is not 6 therefore should not have been charged.

NippyWoowoo · 22/09/2022 20:47

@ABBAsnumberonefan

It’s in the OP.

''Would you expect to pay for 5.5 year old if pricing is

0-5 free
6-17 £25''

How do you interpret that as 'under 5'?

ABBAsnumberonefan · 22/09/2022 20:56

Yeah sorry it doesn’t say that’s what it says on the website / sign though does it? Could’ve been the OPs interpretation especially since the receptionist said under 5s. I can see now she says later that’s what the pricing is wrote as which was me misunderstanding but the OP isn’t that clear really 👎👌that’s how I interpreted it that way.

Missingpop · 22/09/2022 20:57

My dentist works with 5 to 5.5 is free & 5.5 & over pay so if your unlucky enough to take your child when they are 5.5 & 1 day you have to pay for that child’s treatments I do not agree with this as I truly believe all children should receive free treatment whilst under 16 & free if they are in full time education this would go right the way the through uni as well.

cakeorwine · 22/09/2022 20:58

We went somewhere which was birthday dependant. So it said "If your birthday is after......, then you pay"

So it was clear which age pays.

Someone who is 5 does not have to pay if 5 year olds or younger don't have to pay

UnagiForLife · 22/09/2022 21:01

I’d take a screenshot of where it says this on their website, forward it to them in an email ask why you were charged when your child is not age 6 yet.

Notforbeef · 22/09/2022 21:07

PuppyMonkey · 21/09/2022 12:25

The child isn’t under 5, but they’re not 6 either.Confused

Its irrelevant.

It says 0- 5 year olds are free. It does NOT say under fives are free - thats completely different.

0-5 free clearly means if a child is 0, 1,2,3,4 or 5 they are NOT charged.

When they turn 6 they are charged.

I'm not sure why this is so hard for people to understand?!!

cakeorwine · 22/09/2022 21:13

I'm not sure why this is so hard for people to understand

It's a basic maths question. And it doesn't even involve rounding up or down.

Any child who has had their 5th birthday but has not had their 6th birthday is 5.
