Would you expect to pay for 5.5 year old if pricing is

0-5 free
6-17 £25

I was charged and told under 5s are free and as 5.5 years old I have to pay!

properdoughnut · 21/09/2022 12:10

If it was 0<5 and then 5+ then you'd pay. But it wasnt

10HailMarys · 21/09/2022 12:10

'0-5' does not mean 'under 5' and clearly the fact that the £25 pricing starts at 6 underlines this. '0-5' is inclusive of any child who has not yet had their 6th birthday.

Either they have fucked up their signage or their staff don't know what they're doing.

Whatdidyoudo99 · 21/09/2022 12:11

It’s exactly how I have written it

0-5 free of charge
6-17 years £25

Floweryflora · 21/09/2022 12:12

If as you wrote it then no you shouldn’t pay, you’ve been charged as if it said under fives go free.

Why one earth would you pay? It very clear says 5 year olds are free. I would not have paid

SudocremOnEverything · 21/09/2022 12:15

You don’t often see pricing signs that say

0-5 free
6-17 £25

It’s an odd way of putting it. it would be more usual to give adult and child
prices, and then maybe caveat with ‘under 5s/0-5 free’

And a huge price jump is odd too. It’s hard to imagine what charges £25 but let’s 0-5 year olds in for free (rather than, charging a reduced price for 1-5 year olds or 2-5 year olds, or whatever age could actually do the activity).

The wording in the OP is ambiguous. She says the pricing structure is 0-5 free, 6-17 £25. But also that they told her under 5s were free.

And I still don’t know how the 5.5 came up

SudocremOnEverything · 21/09/2022 12:15

Whatdidyoudo99 · 21/09/2022 12:11

It’s exactly how I have written it

0-5 free of charge
6-17 years £25

In which case, why didn’t you just say ‘she’s 5’?

SpinningFloppa · 21/09/2022 12:16

What is the place?

SudocremOnEverything · 21/09/2022 12:18

Is it train tickets?

Bunnycat101 · 21/09/2022 12:19

To me that reads as 6 and over are chargeable and as your child is under 6 they should have been free. Like another PP I’m intrigued by the big price jump from 5- you normally see it from 2/3.

Mommabear20 · 21/09/2022 12:19

When signs are written like that, I'd expect to pay for a child aged 5, but be happy if I didn't have too.

Whatdidyoudo99 · 21/09/2022 12:20

It’s the private dentist.
we went told the total, paid and left. I should have asked there and then but had a very grumpy toddler and after being there an hour just wanted to get home. I have now come home looked at their pricing online and seen we was changed.
I rang this morning and told on phone she is over 5 and under 5s are free. Which then made me doubt what I was reading.

OP posts:
misskatamari · 21/09/2022 12:21

No, you shouldn't have paid if that was their pricing structure. They need to change how it's presented if they want a five year old to be laid for

misskatamari · 21/09/2022 12:21

*paid

SalesMum · 21/09/2022 12:21

They Need to fix their wording then

Child is not 6 should be free

You’d expect to pay for a 5 year old if you saw a sign that said:

0-5 free of charge
6-17 £25?

You'd expect to pay for a child that is very clearly marked as FREE.

Why?

LongLivedQueen · 21/09/2022 12:24

I rang this morning and told on phone she is over 5 and under 5s are free

That isn't what their price list states, they can't make it up as they go along.

Beees · 21/09/2022 12:25

I'd screenshor that and go back and argue it to be honest out of principle. They clearly say that children 6 and over are charged there is no ambiguity your child is not 6 and therefore the charge does not apply to her.

PuppyMonkey · 21/09/2022 12:25

The child isn’t under 5, but they’re not 6 either.Confused

Children qualify for free NHS dentistry. Many dentists will treat children as NHS patients even where they don’t take adult patients on the NHS. It might be worth changing surgery. Even just for the child, who is definitely entitled to free treatment even once they are 6.

Email the practice manager and explain that their website says 0-5 year olds are treated for free but the receptionist insisted on charging you. They’ve got her details, including DOB. They can refund you.

ThorsBedazzler · 21/09/2022 12:27

Their pricing starts at age 6.
I wouldn't expect to pay if my child hadn't had their 6th birthday yet.

IcedOatLatte · 21/09/2022 12:27

The sign isn't as clear as it could be but as a private business they can charge what they like. Other than complaining which you've done there isn't really anything else you can do but warn others, post a google review, not go back there, try to complain to someone more senior etc

Going round and round asking what other people think it means isn't going to achieve anything

IncompleteSenten · 21/09/2022 12:28

I would not expect to pay for a child that has not yet had their 6th birthday if the sign said 0-5 free, 6-whatever pay.

If they meant under 5 they should have said under 5.

Legal age for smoking is what now? 18? Go buy a pack and tell them you're 17 and a half, see what happens.

6 means 6. 5 means 5. A child who has had their 5th birthday but not their 6th is 5!

This has annoyed me far more than is normal Confused

ilovesooty · 21/09/2022 12:28

Hoppinggreen · 21/09/2022 12:00

From that I would say 5 year olds are free

I would too. It says 0-5 free and he's 5.
