Would you expect to pay for 5.5 year old if pricing is

0-5 free
6-17 £25

I was charged and told under 5s are free and as 5.5 years old I have to pay!

They don't though do they. They clearly state children age 6 + pay and those who are aged up to 5 do not pay. No where does it say or imply that the child has to be under 5. Confused

The child in question is 5 and 5 year olds are free. To use your own phrasing why is that hard to understand? Confused

There is no cross over year. It’s 0-5. And 6-17. No overlap.

It doesn't say that at all it says 0-5 Free (not under 5 free), 6-17 £25, if you had to pay £25 from 5 on wards it should say 5-17 £25. On the same principle, I would assume that 17 year olds don't pay full price either, that on turning 18 and as such an adult, they would then pay full adult price.

It's really worrying that so many people are unable to understand something written so clearly and that includes the staff who made the OP pay.

There is no cross over, no under 5 caveat or no ambiguity. There is simply 2 categories and clearly the OPs child falls into the first category as they are not 6.

I'm honestly amazed so many grown adults are misunderstanding something your average class of 4 year olds would comprehend. It's like asking is the pen black or blue and someone arguing it's yellow. Confused

Your dentist is bonkers. If you start to pay once you’re five then they need to say

0-4 - free (because you’re still 4 right up until midnight on the day before your fifth birthday)
5-17 £25 (because you turn 5 from 1 second past midnight on the day of your birthday)

It’s not difficult and there is no overlap.

You could leave a review on their website, saying that you aren't happy because you were charged when their listed prices indicated you wouldn't be.

I would expect to not pay until a child turned 6, as their pricing states anybody age 5 and under is free.

5.5 is still 5 Confused

Either the receptionist who charged you interpreted the pricing system wrong, or the pricing system is poorly written. Either way, I'd take it up with them.

They do NOT state under 5s are free. How is that so hard to understand?

0-5 free so 0,1,2,3,4,5 free
6-17 £25 6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17 £25

I don't know exactly what the law is, but I'm pretty sure it's against the law to advertise a service at a particular price then charge higher after the customer has agreed to and received the service.

DBro had this with covid testing last year travelling to the USA from France. The rules were "Age 0-2", no covid testing needed, "Age 3 and above", present negative covid test. His son was 2.5 and the Air France staff wouldn't let him on the plane without a negative covid test, as they claimed "Age 0-2" meant between 0 and 24 months. When DBro pointed out that using their logic, "Age 3 and above" must mean 36 months and above they said he was wrong!

If they meant under 5 they should have said under 5.

Legal age for smoking is what now? 18? Go buy a pack and tell them you're 17 and a half, see what happens.

6 means 6. 5 means 5. A child who has had their 5th birthday but not their 6th is 5!

This has annoyed me far more than is normal Confused

I'd actually phone them up and not say who I was just ask "How much would do charge for a 17 year old"? And if they say £25 (which I'm sure they would as 18 and up is obviously the adult pricing) I would then say - well how come the same logic doesn't apply to 0-5's on your price list?

well it clearly says that you start paying aged 6.
so no, I would not expect to pay.

If it just said 0-5 free, then it would be up for debate.
but by adding 6-17 paid then it is clera that 5 year olds shouldn't pay

I would take it up with the practice management, and keep screenshots of the website etc.

are both very clear bands and your child falls into the first one

If that is not what they intend then they need to change their advertising

Take it up with trading standards if they don't refund and change the website

Anyway they have worded it incorrectly is should be under fives if they want anyone older than five to pay.

You have to have an NHS contract to provide NHS treatment. Some practices have no contract and are totally private.
