AIBU?

Would you prioritise your grandchild's birthday?

Would you choose going to a friend's wedding (not close friends) over your grandchild's 6th birthday party? Even if the wedding invite came first, knowing the date of your grandchild's birthday, would you check to see what would be happening for their birthday? Being a Saturday too.

Bit more context... what if you would also be moving to another part of the country from said grandchild the following week.

Interested to know opinions.

I’d prioritise the wedding and do something special with the child another day. Birthdays are less important than weddings- you literally get one every year.

I think if I knew I’d be moving away and it would be the last birthday I’d be seeing them on, I’d prioritise the birthday. But in general a wedding would be prioritised and I’d see my grandchild near their birthday and not necessarily the day.

I don’t think any of my children have spent their birthdays with a grandparent

This would be my approach too

Weddings trump birthdays. I would be going to the wedding.

Wedding.
Lots of grandparents don't go to kids birthday parties, they just spend time with them at another point.

Wedding. You can celebrate with the grandchild on another day.

It would depend on the relationship. My own parents, I know, would absolutely check in and likely miss the wedding. My in laws wouldn’t even consider the child’s birthday

Yes, I’d go to the wedding.

Yes, I’d move away.

Reasons being that we don’t live in each others pockets basically.

We don’t always have big celebrations for birthdays and if moving was the best thing for my family I wouldn’t stay put and be miserable / disadvantage some family members over others.

I'd prioritise the wedding if I wanted to go. Brithdays can be celebrated any time.

If moving to a different part of the country is right for me then yes I would.

Birthdays can be celebrated on another day. The wedding can not.

And honestly an adult fund social event or a kids birthday with hyper kids....not even a competition

Yes, weddings trump birthdays.

Birthdays happen every year, weddings only happen once in a lifetime (mostly)

Wedding. Would see grandchild another time. Birthday parties are usually for classmates at this age. Plenty of birthdays to come; only one wedding (hopefully!).
