I had my bag searched at the airport because tweezers showed up when they x rayed it.
After much ado I was allowed to keep them. I also had 2 bottles of spirits in a carrier bag that I had bought with my husband in the duty free shop in which they showed no interest.
I have no idea what harm I could do with the tweezers but if I had smashed the two bottles together and I would have a couple of lethal weapons!

Smashing the bottles together would draw attention and you'd most likely be stopped and restrained at that stage before you got the opportunity to use them. Tweezers are more "ready to go", no prep work needed.

FarmerRefuted · 11/09/2022 22:25

Although how big were they as tweezers are generally allowed.

So can you pluck someone to death? Smashing two bottles together is pretty quick and you would have to cut throat weapons.

Yep, my mum was irritated when she couldn't continue her cross stitch on a 9 hour flight because her tiny sewing scissors weren't allowed on board.

Safety is important but it can get a bit silly.
Also they couldn't possibly stop people buying booze or profits would be affected.....

Yes . they have to keep the money coming in, sod the fact that you can cut someone's throat!

You can put them between your fingers prongs-style and have a pretty effective stabbing weapon particularly if you were to aim for soft areas such as eyeballs or the side of someone's neck. It's all decided on balance of risk but tweezers are usually allowed anyway which is why I asked if they were particularly large and/or pointed.

Theimpossiblegirl · 11/09/2022 22:27

You can buy tweezers at Superdrug in Bristol airport so kind of defeats the object...

Ihatethenewlook · 11/09/2022 22:29

I remember me and my sister being searched. She got to keep the lighter they found in her pocket. I wasn’t allowed to keep my lip balm though

MarmiteCoriander · 11/09/2022 22:29

I had a metal crochet hook taken off me at the airport, years ago after Sept 11th! The actual hook part isn't sharp or pointy- unlike the metal knife and fork we were given on the plane! 🙄

Normal size. Still no where near as good as a broken bottle.

Well come on now! You know how dangerous lip balm is!

It's not just the potential to be used as a weapon though. Yes, the weapon issue is a consideration but things like tweezers, hooks, sewing scissors, etc can also be used as tools so sexurity decisions also have to take into account things like sabotage or these tools being used to assemble a device that's been brought on board in separate parts.

A bottle, or two bottles, being broken would draw the attention of people in the immediate area, there'd be a commotion and you'd very quickly be disarmed and restrained. Using tweezers as a screwdriver to assemble a bomb in the toilet? Much less visible.

Like I said, it's all about balance of risk and some objects are deemed riskier than others.

No I don't buy that as my brother was allowed a small swiz army knife. They obviously thought he may have to take stones out of a horses hoof while on board.

I'm shocked that your brother was allowed to take a Swiss Army knife on board in his hand luggage!

billybassie · 11/09/2022 22:57

My kindle and knickers got drug swabbed at Gatwick on Saturday.

Probably because the blade was less than 6cm.

You probably shouldn't have snorted your cocaine on the security tray before going though the metal detector. Be more subtle next time ...

Tell her to bring dental floss next time and use the cutter on the packaging. That’s what I’ve done in the past.
