AIBU?

To waste £2000!

I had a new carpet fitted about 18 months ago which cost £2000 (big room). However, now I want a real wood floor which is going to cost £6000. Is it really bad of me to waste all that money and offer the carpet for free to anyone who wants it and replace it with the wooden floor?

Am I being unreasonable?

Sounds like a waste of money to me. If you are drowning in it though, it sounds like as good a way to spend it as any.

I am certainly not drowning in money but I intend to stay in the house for a long time so I am trying to justify the cost.

Assuming you aren't being as goady as fuck

its very wasteful and given its going to get cold it's not environmentally sound either. Carpet will retain more heat.

Just live with the "hardship" of new carpet for a while.

Are you generally quite fickle? It may not be worth spending the £6k if you are going to change your mind again in 18 months time. Or maybe store the carpet in case you do change your mind?

No not fickle. I spend my money on my house not on holidays, nights out etc I enjoy my home.

Was going to say send me the 2k if you really have it burning in your pocket, but it seems like you have 6k to waste, so I will happily use it for you.

Keep the brand new carpet fgs.

Sounds like the carpet was pretty expensive for one room. Honestly no I wouldn't. I'd live with it for a while at least.

I mean it depends on your means. I've just forked out under £3k for new sandstone tiles in my kitchen and bathroom and winced at that. I've wanted to replace the crappy vinyl the whole five years we've lived here as it's wrinkly and hard to clean. Our income is above average and we have the savings to do it, and I've still had guilt over whether that's wasteful Blush

Lovely post, OP, so well judged in terms of timing and sentiment.

You only live once! Go for it! If you spend most of your time at home, have it exactly as you want it.

Some people spend their money on holidays, I prefer to spend it on my house.

So have you had a holiday in the last 4 years and spent money on that? I have not.

YANBU

You have to live with flooring

If you regret the decision rip it up and replace

If you have the money why not

I'd personally keep the carpet until after winter as it will be more functional. Unless you have underfloor heating, walking barefoot on cold floors is horrid first thing in the morning!

Is there something wrong with the carpet or is the wooden flooring a new preference?

Are you getting ripped off a lot? £2k for a carpet is mad, and most people can't afford £6k on new flooring on a whim, even if they do earn a lot

No nothing wrong. I ask the question as I am not well off and the wooden floor would be a big chunk of my meagre saving. However as I have said, I dont go on holiday, nights out, new clothes etc.

No its a very big room and the price also included the hall and stairs.

People are being awful to you OP. No, I wouldn't replace a brand new carpet. But I wouldn't make you feel bad for having the idea.

I'm with you OP, we spent an eye watering amount of our garden being landscaped and then again on a new kitchen, decorating downstairs and new flooring throughout. Next stop is windows and doors due to the price of bills getting higher, this will however, mean we need to decorate again.

People would unlikely be so bothered if you had posted about going on holiday. Go for it. You'll get much more out of spending money on your home than you would elsewhere.
