If you don't usually work Monday's and now there's an extra bank holiday...

...would you be bothered?
I'm actually not, I'm getting to see the funeral which is the important bit to me.
However many colleagues have the same day off and are now pushing for an extra half day annual leave to make up for it.
It feels a bit unnecessary and grabby to me but I'm in the minority.
Thoughts?

You're being unreasonable - you should get extra leave granted
You're not being unreasonable - everyone should just accept it for what it is and move on

OP posts:

Am I being unreasonable?

The day off is to allow as many people as possible to see the funeral or take part. It absolutely isn't a normal bank holiday. I wouldn't dream of expecting the day off if I wasn't working anyway.

luxxlisbon · 13/09/2022 19:24

Why would you/they get an extra days leave? It is a day off for many sectors for a specific purpose, if you are already off then there is no need. It’s not a holiday, most things will be shut.

LuckyCat4 · 13/09/2022 19:25

I don't work on a Monday and I don't expect another day off

Castaspell · 13/09/2022 19:26

I work in a small business (<15 staff) which is always closed on Mondays. I was shocked one of my colleagues asked today if we would receive a day in lieu of the bank holiday or be paid for it. Seems horrendously grabby and selfish to me.

HangOnToYourself · 13/09/2022 19:27

We have been offered a day in lieu if we cant take Monday off, I think it's nice as regardless of the reason behind it it's still a free day off, at my day rate that's about 270 quid for doing nothing so why shouldnt everyone have the same benefit?

Cactuslockdown · 13/09/2022 19:27

I don’t work on a Monday and will just be happy to be he with the kids and watch the funeral. I expect some will call for an extra day to make up though which is a bit crass

Oblomov22 · 13/09/2022 19:28

No it's not grabby. It needs to be equal and fair. If you work another day you should get an extra part entitlement.

Ladyofthelake53 · 13/09/2022 19:32

I work shifts it's my scheduled day off I woukdnt expect and extra day off

Ladyofthelake53 · 13/09/2022 19:34

My colleagues who work that day will get enhanced pay rates though for working a Bank Holiday even though its their usual working day

DuringDinnerMints · 13/09/2022 19:35

I work for days a week with Mondays off. My usual lovely day if peace and quiet will now involve two kids rampaging through it. But it's just life and a one off, the funeral had to be some time. I'm lucky I only work part time and don't have to juggle childcare.

cptartapp · 13/09/2022 19:37

I've considered asking my line manager tbh. It came to mind very quickly. Pro rata of course. But no one else at work has mentioned it.

Likewise.

Princessglittery · 13/09/2022 19:38

Legally it will depend if your employer a) gives an extra days holiday or b) takes it out of existing holiday allowance.

a) you should get pro rats extra hours/days leave
b) their leave allowance will reduce and yours will stay the same.

Starlightstarbright1 · 13/09/2022 19:38

I work for a national company.. leave is been added if it is day off.

Whatapalavarrr · 13/09/2022 19:40

I don't work on Mondays.

If Christmas day was a Monday I would celebrate on that day, and would also get a day off pro rata at another time.

I see no difference between the above example and the Queen's funeral.

notforonesecond · 13/09/2022 19:40

We’ve been told if your non working day falls on the Monday that you’ll get the hours off to use on a different day. Pro rata if you’re part time. Same way it works for any other bank holiday at our place.

WelshNerd · 13/09/2022 19:41

I'm contractually entitled to bank holidays. It's not grabby.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 13/09/2022 19:43

How is it grabby?

KensingtonStation · 13/09/2022 19:45

I think it would have been better not to include the word holiday because people do then feel aggrieved. There must be an alternative description such as day of mourning (which would upset the republicans) or ceremonial day. Even just Funeral Day, with an explanation that where possible, it would be a non-working day.

I will be working, my American paymasters are not sympathetic.

LegoLady95 · 13/09/2022 19:47

My employer approaches all bank holidays the same way. If full timers have to work 80% of their weekly hours on a bank holiday week, so do part timers.

FlippertyGibberts · 13/09/2022 19:48

FFS, it's not about being grabby - it's about getting the amount of annual leave that you're contractually entitled to. Everyone should be aware of what their contract says with regard to bank holidays.

CaptainSamCarter · 13/09/2022 19:51

Local Government employee. I am 0.5 FTE and don't work Mondays. I've had 1/2 a day added to my holiday entitlement to take at another time.

That would almost certainly be even more of an organisational pain in the arse than having it as a bank holiday. Which, for all the faults with it, does at least tap into an existing system we already have and mean lots of organisations already have a plan and process for dealing with the day as most employee contracts will address bank holidays.

Grabby and selfish? Why?

FourChimneys · 13/09/2022 19:53

Of course there should be a day off in lieu. There is no mandate to mourn.
