Is a size 14 viewed as overweight?

Ilovemycatalot · 11/09/2022 10:31

Just reading online that uk size 16 is the average size of a uk woman right now. Im a size 14 and 5ft 3 so always felt overweight anyway but in reality would you view someone as a size 14 overweight? For me anyone who can fit into a size 10 would be considered slim although I know clothes sizes come up different depending on shop. Just curious what dress size people on here buy and if they consider themselves overweight.

I’m 5ft 3 and if I were a size 14 I’d be well over the BMI range, and visibly have rolls of fat.
You can’t give a blanket answer as almost our bodies are different… but no two ways about it, size 14 is fat on me.

balloonzoo · 11/09/2022 10:34

Depends on body shape, height I guess. I'm a 10/12 but overweight and out of shape.

miserablecat · 11/09/2022 10:34

The 2 things are not mutually exclusive. The average woman might be size 16 but that might mean the average woman is overweight.
Size 14 for someone 5ft is likely to be overweight, size 14 for someone 5'10 might not be

Topgub · 11/09/2022 10:34

Why does it matter?

If you dont want to be overweight for health reasons then dress size isn't important

kw1091 · 11/09/2022 10:34

I’m 6”1 and a size 14 and whilst I’m probably a bit overweight I don’t look it just because I’m a bigger human in general

mynameiscalypso · 11/09/2022 10:35

I hover between a 10 (rarely) and a 14. Im a comfortable 12 I'd say. My BMI is overweight and I definitely look big.

Xenia · 11/09/2022 10:35

Sizes differ so much it is better just go by weight and height (or the NHS waist measurement test)

TyFly · 11/09/2022 10:36

Depends on other factors

One of my friends is a size 14, but is 6ft 2 and has a BMI under 25 so isn't overweight

But for the majority of women, they will be overweight when at a 14

I'm obese at a size 14 and am 5ft 6!

DialsMavis · 11/09/2022 10:38

Totally depends on height.

LostAtTheCrossRoad · 11/09/2022 10:38

I'm 5' 3" and a size 14 is borderline obese on me. I'm currently a 12 and slap bang in the middle of oversight at bmi 27. I need to get to just under 10st and a small size 10 to be a normal weight.

Sally872 · 11/09/2022 10:38

5ft 2 and size 12, heading for 14. I am over weight. I don't think of myself as fat, but think it is clear for people to see I am over the healthy BMI range. Think I want to loose a stone/drop a dress size.

I expect taller people would not be overweight at size 14.

Spinfit · 11/09/2022 10:38

I think the average size in the UK is 14-16 for women but for most people a UK 14 puts them in the overweight category for weight. The UK is number 3 in Europe for overweight and obesity so it is not surprising that the mean is skewed in that direction.

Ilovemycatalot · 11/09/2022 10:38

Did the BMI calculator thing and I was considered obese. Just upset me a bit guess I’m looking for reassurance but yeah I’m definitely overweight by at least a couple of stone.

I'm 5ft 7 and size 14 with a BMI of 29. I have heart and lung problems following Covid and have been told I'm overweight and to need to lose 2 stone to get into a healthy weight range.

Funkyblues101 · 11/09/2022 10:40

Depends on height and age, I think. Over 5ft 8 and over age 40 then a size 14 looks fine but on a shorter or younger woman it could look pretty big. If I'd been my size as a 20 year old I would have felt massive but nowadays I feel pretty slim (until some talk teenager floats by...).

Ilovemycatalot · 11/09/2022 10:41

Last time I weighed myself just under 11 and a half stone last year I could get into a size 12 just feel every year I’m gaining more weight.

Size 14 is overweight. I'm size 14 and 5ft 3 and fully aware it is overweight but I've just accepted it as the amount of work i have to put in to lose weight and keep it off these days feels unsustainable.

I have been a lower weight and sustained it for quite some time but my body just no longer wants to cooperate! I'm sure it could be done if I had a bit more free time but like a lot of people now I'm very time poor which is why I think many of us are in this situation.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 11/09/2022 10:41

I’m 5’6 and a size 14 and would consider myself slightly overweight based on how I look in the mirror. Not sure about my BMI as I don’t own scales so not sure exactly how much I weigh but would guess between 11 and 11.5 stone which old put me either at the very top of normal BMI or the lower end of overweight.

Wouldn’t matter is 90% of people your height replied that they were a size 14 though. That would just mean 90% were overweight. You need to focus on your health, not be unhealthy just because a lot of other people are.

Dacadactyl · 11/09/2022 10:41

I would say at 5 foot 3 and size 14 someone is most definitely overweight.

Ilovemycatalot · 11/09/2022 10:42

Definitely agree that the taller you are the more you can carry it off.

Depends where the weight sits. All on the bum and thighs and boobs...no. on the tummy. Yes. I'm am apple shape and I look overweight at size 14.

HoneyIShrunkThePizza · 11/09/2022 10:42

I look quite chubby when I creep up to size 12 (it was my post partum size after baby 3) but my ex boss who is nearly 6ft and incredibly slim looking wore a 12 and looked fantastic. So frame comes into it.

Generally, yes, most people I know around a 14 I'd consider overweight but that doesn't mean I don't also think they're beautiful.

couchcritter · 11/09/2022 10:43

Of course it's overweight. But then most people are these days, so it's normal.

ProbablyPossiblyPerhaps · 11/09/2022 10:44

Under/healthy/overweight are factual categories based on weight and height, not dress size.

In general someone of 5 ft 3 would probably be objectively a bit overwight at a size 14 but if you're active and eat mostly unprocessed foods and are happy in your skin, then personally I say who cares? If those three factors apply you probably look great anyway, not that that's what's important.

A 5 ft 11 size 14 woman would probably be within her healthy weight range (as she might be at a size 8 - the ranges are quite wide) - her activity levels, whether she ate mostly healthy foods and whether she was happy in her skin would be just as important as for the slightly overweight shorter woman though.
