Is a size 14 viewed as overweight?

Just reading online that uk size 16 is the average size of a uk woman right now. Im a size 14 and 5ft 3 so always felt overweight anyway but in reality would you view someone as a size 14 overweight? For me anyone who can fit into a size 10 would be considered slim although I know clothes sizes come up different depending on shop. Just curious what dress size people on here buy and if they consider themselves overweight.

Move away from dress sizes, they mean nothing these days. Use the bmi calc and waist to height measurement. I'm sure you're sad/shocked if you're coming up as obese ie over 30bmi but you are where you are. Feel sad then decide to do something about if (if you want).

NeedAHoliday2021 how our children (and other people) see and describe us is kind of weirdly fascinating and often nothing to do with how we actually look I don't think. I was thinking this when I finally met my 17year old dd's boyfriend's mum last week - DD had said that she was overweight and looked a lot like another of her friend's mums, who is quite plump. In a separate conversation DD had asked me if I wanted any of the clothes she was sorting out to give away/ donate/ sell, and when I'd said only if anything was to big for her she said "don't be silly, you're skinny".

Her boyfriend 's mum was pretty much exactly the same size as me, it turned out.

I'm definitely two clothes sizes bigger than DD.

I don't know what fairground mirrors she's looking at people in!

I am 5'6" and a size 14 and my BMI is on the overweight / obese line (28-29). So Yes, I would say that for the vast majority of people a size 14 is overweight.

For me an 8 is where I am defnitely not overweight and a 10 is still usually fine but somewhere between a 10 and 12 is where I cross into overweight.

@Fatballs

What about this picture? Yes I know it's the mail. But it was the first thing that came up when I googled.

Do you not think it's 'true and fair'. Not many rolls of fat.

What about the second picture, in white. More accurate? Look at the 2 women who are sized 12. Number 3 & 4. One is 5'8". One is 5'11". Which proves my earlier point that to people carry weight better.

Here we go again.

OP, it's really hard to make healthy choices about food and activity when you've got a bunch of posts from strangers telling you that they've got great rolls of fat when they are much smaller in build, because all it does is make you feel shit about yourself.

The important thing is to be as happy and healthy as possible - this may involve some reduction in body fat, some increase in muscle mass, but it isn't compulsory. Activity is great in making you fitter, stronger and giving you a psychological boost - and those can make it easier to make healthy decisions about food. So it's the feeling well and happy that helps, not self hatred and punishment through severe restriction.

Coming away from this thread thinking 'everybody says I'm really fat, I've got to go on a diet right now' isn't the way to be happy and healthy. Thinking 'I've noticed I've got a little larger, the people who love me do so whatever my appearance, I'd like to be healthier and happier, so I'm going to look into things that could help' is a good way.

Definitely going to make a change just needed to have a reality check. Friends and close family won’t always be honest with you as they don’t like to offend but sometimes you need some honesty.

Most of us need a reality check every now and again!

Remember........ lots of vegetables and lean protein, and just a small amount of fruit/sugar, healthy carbs (quinoa, lentils etc), and a little healthy fat (EVOO), eaten during a convenient 8-hour window (intermittent fasting);-

I.e. eat mostly seasonal vegetables, and learn to do a hundred recipes for chicken and salmon 😅)

To begin with, track your calories - not to become obsessive, but to ease into a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. (You need to reduce your calorie intake by 500/day to lose 1 lb a week, I think...)

Plus at least 20 minutes of exercise every day. Very effective as a motivating force.

Dress sizes can be very deceptive. I’m average height, and forty years ago I was 8 stone and a size 10. I’m two and a half stone heavier at the moment and still usually wear a size 10. My BMI is 24.4, so classed as healthy (just), but I know myself that I have more stamina and feel better all round when I’m 10 stone, so I’m working to get back to that (more exercise and intermittent fasting). I know I’d be very overweight if I were a size 14.

Newusernameaug · 11/09/2022 11:36

Size 14 if taller that 5’8 is probably ok, I would of thought anything under that height and is likely over weight but as others have said everyone’s different.

Fatballs · 11/09/2022 11:36

@Oblomov22

The first thing I notice about the pictures is how young the women are.

I’m lying on a beach at the moment and there are rolls abundant.

NiceCupOfTea2 · 11/09/2022 11:36

A size 14 today is much bigger than a size 14 30/40 years ago. I'd say 14 is overweight personally, next sizes are completely ridiculous, I can buy a size 6 in there and it isn't tight, I'm not a 6, I'm an 8 at the very smallest and look normal size (im normal weight), I still have shape and don't look skinny. Sizes creeping up and shops making clothes sizes bigger helps to normalise obesity. You should go off bmi (unless you are an athlete with a high muscle mass) that's a better indication than sizes in shops. I'd say a 14 today is overweight though.

Montasaurus · 11/09/2022 11:37

Vanity sizing means actually a size 14 is a 18 years ago.

People have lost the concept of normal sizing and overweight is now normalised.

A size 14 on me - I am 179cm - and I would be overweight. Anything over a 10 and I would feel like I was chubby. Years ago a 14 would be the borderline.

CrunchyCarrot · 11/09/2022 11:37

No, OP, I would consider a person's height and general build rather than thinking a size 14 is 'overweight'. I am a size 14-16 and 5'10 and a half tall, I am regarded as 'thin'!

TwinkleChristmas · 11/09/2022 11:38

I’d say yes…. Regardless of height a size 14 is overweight.

Joystir59 · 11/09/2022 11:40

I'm a 14 and just de normal weight range for my bmi. I'm 5' 7" tall

BashfulClam · 11/09/2022 11:40

i’m 5’9” and at size 14 I’m very slim with a good BMI….I’m aiming to get there again.

Joystir59 · 11/09/2022 11:40

HailAdrian · 11/09/2022 11:40

Most people are gonna be overweight at size 14 unless they're tall.

kateandme · 11/09/2022 11:41

BMI is bullshit. Look up it history. Made by a white male mathematician for white males
it cannot indicate your lifestyle, health, dna, shape, economic situation, family, job, wellbeing.u want health?or society diet culture ideal of thinned.
because why does being bigger hurt.health nah just wanting to be smaller and even then it’s jot about smaller it’s about living in a world here thinness is acceptance.

mam0918 · 11/09/2022 11:41

Depends on a LOT of stuff like body shape.

Im 5 foot 8 and was 7 st and my friend was 5 foot 9 and just short of 11 stone.

In our teens she use to wear mens large/xtra large tops (approx. size 16-18) yet size 8 jeans because she had HUGE boobs, a bit of a tummy but super skinny legs, arms and little bum. She wore size 16 dresses because her boobs wouldnt fit in anything smaller.

So is she size 16 or size 8?

Visually she looked the biggest in our group yet I can say I have never ever fit into size 8 jeans (trust me us girls swapped clothes often and I tried many times to squeeze into her jeans, never worked lol).

yet I had TINY boobs (28AA) and a size 6 waist but BIG hips (always been size 12) and visually looked very skinny apparently and classed as underweight.

I am now the exact same weight my friend was then (just shy of 11 stone) and I look nothing like she did and the sizes dont match. I now wear size 12-14 jeans, Im bigger now at 36D breast pushing me up more to a 8-10 size top (depending on stretch in material).

I can still usually wear size 8 dresses normally as most are either free at the hip or very strechy bodycon material, very few require me to go up to a 10.

While I dont tend to get called skinny as much I have certainly never been called fat but my friend unfortunately was at the same size so the only difference is that we have opposit body shapes (shes top heavy, Im bottom heavy).

So at 'size 14' we both would look wildly diffent.

RudsyFarmer · 11/09/2022 11:41

I’m 12/14 and BMI wise overweight. Visually I’d say I look ‘normal’ as in average sized.

Twillow · 11/09/2022 11:42

I have gradually become more comfortable in a 14 but when I was younger I was a 10. I'm quite tall but I do feel overweight.

CuteOrangeElephant · 11/09/2022 11:42

It surely depends. I am 5'9" and overweight. Currently I am a size 16.

When I was much skinnier years ago my BMI was 20 and I had a size 14. I have broad shoulders, wide hips and long legs and arms. Anything smaller than a 14 will never fit.

Sunglassesintherain11 · 11/09/2022 11:43

I hope there's no-one with a past eating disorder on here. I mean apart from me.

The only person I have ever known to say a size 14 is overweight is my MIL and she's commented a few times on this thread.
