Is a size 14 viewed as overweight?

Just reading online that uk size 16 is the average size of a uk woman right now. Im a size 14 and 5ft 3 so always felt overweight anyway but in reality would you view someone as a size 14 overweight? For me anyone who can fit into a size 10 would be considered slim although I know clothes sizes come up different depending on shop. Just curious what dress size people on here buy and if they consider themselves overweight.

At size 14 and 5’4” I’m normal weight (big bum and thighs lmao). Totally depends where you gain the weight, your height, etc.

DeclineandFall · 11/09/2022 11:45

Depends on your build not your height. You can be tall and small framed, short and big framed. Depends on the width of your hips or the size of your tits, the amount of muscle mass etc.
I have PCOS, had a long number of years of of infertility and having gone through period where I restricted my diet and upped my exercise until I made myself unwell whilst I thought I was trying to make myself healthier. I still couldnt get under a size 14 and I had a pretty robust life changing discussion with a doctor which made me really change the way I thought about weight and sizing and health and myself. It's why I hate these threads. They are so damaging particularly for those who are not small framed. You find what's right and healthy for your body and you're happy with it.

transformandriseup · 11/09/2022 11:46

I have been a size 14 and 16 and I remember size 14 was when I started to loose my shape so I would consider it to be overweight.

Tabbouleh · 11/09/2022 11:47

I am 5"7 and would consider myself very overweight at that size. My ideal size is 10 ( currently a small 12).

I hope there's no-one with a past eating disorder on here. I mean apart from me.

The only person I have ever known to say a size 14 is overweight is my MIL and she's commented a few times on this thread.

Someone with a past eating disorder knows what they’re getting into from the thread title, and can take responsibility for managing their own triggers.

And no, your MIL is not the only person that thinks size 14 is overweight. I am the OP’s height - as a size 12, I have large rolls of belly fat, for example, full “apron” folded over the skin below (as well as being above healthy BMI range). Size 14 would only be more of that.

PurpleCatCuddles · 11/09/2022 11:47

I'm 5ft and was size 6-8 years ago and then gained a lot of weight very quickly. I'm a size 24 now (down from 28!). I would say a size 12 is where I started noticing my weigh gain and by size 14 I definitely felt and looked fat.

Benjaminsniddlegrass · 11/09/2022 11:52

I'm 5ft 8 - currently top end of a size 14 and my BMI is slightly over. Until recent weight gain this year was well within healthy BMI, toned etc and I was still a 14 just much more comfortably.

RomeoMcFlourish · 11/09/2022 11:53

I’m always a 14 on top due to having a very large bust, so I can be well within my BMI but always need a 14.

However, to stay within my BMI I do need to stay in size 10 or sometimes small 12 trousers. If I went up to a 14 I would definitely be overweight.

Fatballs · 11/09/2022 11:54

BMI is bullshit

The medical profession seems to disagree. The broad span of each BMI category takes into account a wide range different circumstances you list.

TheNoodlesIncident · 11/09/2022 11:56

Forget about dress sizes, you need to focus on what is right for you.

Once I was a 6-8 (La Redoute sizes, no idea how that compared to other retailers) because I am only 152 cm (5'1"?) and have narrow shoulders and pelvis. I fitted into kids' clothes. Any spare fat on me shows up because of my proportions, if I was a lot taller I could get away with it as spread over a greater distance. I have been a size 12-14 and determined to diet when I realised it, as on me that is always going to be overweight and quite considerably so.

Clothes sizing has gone all over the place with many retailers using their own version, it seems like. So stick with your BMI as a guide.

BinBandit · 11/09/2022 11:56

i'm nearly 5'10 and mostly a size 14. I am on the exact upper point of "healthy" BMI and for my frame, I consider myself overweight.

Stravaig · 11/09/2022 11:56

At 5 ft 3, and given a 14 now was a 16 not long ago, absolutely yes. Obese BMI. Honestly though, clothes sizes are not a gauge of anything, they vary so much these days. Go by height/weight/BMI, waist measurement, and above all, health!

Jalepenojello · 11/09/2022 11:57

For most people I’d say they would be overweight at a size 14 yes

Wanderingowl · 11/09/2022 11:57

RealBecca · 11/09/2022 10:42

Depends where the weight sits. All on the bum and thighs and boobs...no. on the tummy. Yes. I'm am apple shape and I look overweight at size 14.

Not really. I'm a fairly pronounced hourglass and I put on weight very evenly all over. I have the same proportions as a size 4 as I do as a 14. I was 'shapely' as a size 14 but I was clearly very overweight. I am very short though. I used to think it was a blessing that I could put on weight and still hold my shape but now I think it's a curse in disguise as it leaves me prone to being complacent as I put weight on.

Beezknees · 11/09/2022 11:58

Depends on your BMI surely. I'm a size 12 and I'm clinically overweight according to my BMI. Everyone carries weight in different places. Mine mostly goes on my stomach and arms unfortunately.

PugInTheHouse · 11/09/2022 11:59

I would be overweight at size 14 as I'm 5ft 4, probably a lot overweight. My friend who was 5ft 10 was very skinny as a size 12 so as a size 15 she'd still be very slim.

Wisteriaroundthedoor · 11/09/2022 11:59

I’m five seven and a 14 and I’m overweight, so I’m sorry I think it’s very likely you are clinically obese. It is hard though and denial is easy.

I am always surprised on here when I see folks saying if you’re fat you know it. In my experience a lot of people don’t and are in denial. I see so many comments of “I don’t look it” or “I carry it well” or “ my friends can’t believe I weigh so much” “I don’t look a 16’, when generally the person does look it, doesn’t carry it well, their friends do believe it amd they do look a 16.

weight Is such a taboo subject now it’s ingrained to lie through your teeth.

Partypoooooper · 11/09/2022 12:00

I would see a size 14 as overweight, I've recently gone from a large 12 bordering on 14 to a 10 and I only now think I'm an ok size.

ShahRukhKhan · 11/09/2022 12:01

Depends on height and how you carry your weight. I am 5 ft 5 and I look great at a 14. I'd love to be a 14 again!

ReneBumsWombats · 11/09/2022 12:02

It's worth remembering that most obese people don't look like the extreme examples a lot of people imagine. Obesity is smaller than a lot of people think.

sparklecement · 11/09/2022 12:03

I’m a 12 and 5’7. A 14 would make me very much overweight.

VladmirsPoutine · 11/09/2022 12:04

If it helps the average woman in the UK is therefore overweight. I think average height is 5'3 or 5'4 and a size 16.

AUDHD · 11/09/2022 12:04

I’m 5 foot 9 and a size 12. I’m about a stone overweight

Blueblell · 11/09/2022 12:05

It really depends on height. I am a loose 14 but having lost 8 stone I feel very slim and grateful to no longer be a size 26. I am 5.8 and still very heavy on the scales actually, although but no longer in the morbidly obese category. My bmi is still overweight however.

MargotChateau · 11/09/2022 12:06

I’m a size ten and 5 ‘4’ and feel overweight, though doctors refer to me as slim for a pregnant person. I have a small frame and small boned so for me I’m overweight and I’m also unfit due to a back injury.
