Is a size 14 viewed as overweight?

Just reading online that uk size 16 is the average size of a uk woman right now. Im a size 14 and 5ft 3 so always felt overweight anyway but in reality would you view someone as a size 14 overweight? For me anyone who can fit into a size 10 would be considered slim although I know clothes sizes come up different depending on shop. Just curious what dress size people on here buy and if they consider themselves overweight.

Depends on height and build.

greenacrylicpaint · 11/09/2022 11:09

clothes sizing varies so much it's impossible to say a size 14 is big or a size 8 is tiny.

I'm 5.9, within healthy bmi range (just) and have clothes ranging in size from 10-18. all fit well.

Very few women will be a healthy weight at a size 14. They might be overweight, but they can still look gorgeous though!

This is complete rubbish, see my previous post

WalkingOnSonshine · 11/09/2022 11:09

I’m a size 14 and overweight. I’m 80kg.

Viostep · 11/09/2022 11:10

I would say size 14 is overweight.
I am 5ft2, 13s6 and a size 18, so obese. I would love to lose 2 stone and be a size 14 but ultimately I would still be over weight at that size.

Some people carry it well, depends on things like your height and fat distribution.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 11/09/2022 11:13

It depends. I'm 6' 1" and a size 14. I'm slightly overweight though.

steppon · 11/09/2022 11:14

well it completely depends on height & shape doesn't it

FaultybutFabulous · 11/09/2022 11:15

My BMI is 26.1 and I'm 5'3" and weigh 67kg. I need to lose a good stone. I wear a 10/12 depending. I'm quite large framed. Even at 8stone I was a size 10.

TheFormerMrsPugwash · 11/09/2022 11:16

I'm 5 foot 2 and if I were a size 14 I would be and would look absolutely humungous. I'd be as wide as I would be tall.

steppon · 11/09/2022 11:16

Also bust size

steppon · 11/09/2022 11:18

Well no because that would only be true if you were 31" in height not 62" 😆

katepilar · 11/09/2022 11:19

How can a clothes size be classed as overweight?! a small person of that size can be overweight and a tall person of that size can be skinny.

I hate when people are condition to think this way. Its scary.

BlooberryBiskits · 11/09/2022 11:20

A majority of women would be: depending on height & frame though a minority would not be: agree that with stretchy clothes/vanity sizing this is not a good indicator

I think most people if they are honest with themselves can see if they are carrying too much weight or not: BMI can help but isn’t everything either (it’s based on white men for a starter, so doesn’t take into account boobs or different body types found for different ethnic groups). Waist vs hip size and /or a naked jump test will tell you all you need to know

Also, if you eat healthily 90% of the time and exercise your weight will settle at a point that is healthy for you (for many people this is more than they would ideally like but that’s just life)

BeanieTeen · 11/09/2022 11:20

There will be variables as pp have stated - height, build, dress sizes varying in shops etc but generally a size 14 will be overweight. Size 14s who are not will be in the minority.
Pussy footing around, making excuses why a 14 may still be ‘slim’ is wishful thinking in most cases. It’s this kind of denial that leads to people losing track of how heavy they are getting.

Oblomov22 · 11/09/2022 11:21

@Fatballs
Yeah, actually I do know what all my close friends wear, size wise. Because we discuss it.

Plus I can tell what size most women are. You maybe not be able to but most women I know do know exactly what size other women are. In real life and both on TV and in a magazine if you showed me a size 10,12,14,16,18, would know the difference and I would be able to mostly / often correctly point out what size any of them were.

Re the rolls of fat ok I correct what I said earlier. But I still think it is necessarily the norm it's actually quite rare to see rolls of fat, on a size 14. Occasional, but rare. I know lots of women who are size 14 and none of them actually have rows of fat.

In fact many women who are overweight don't actually have roles of fat even at a much bigger size. It depends on the elasticity of the skin.

Some women wear clothes where you can't see their body shape underneath, like a smock. But not that many. most women wear slightly more figure hugging clothes and with a lot of clothes you can I see exactly what someone's body shape is underneath the clothes and you can see if they're just a bit overweight or very overweight and if they actually have rolls of fat and / or bulges.

flirtygirl · 11/09/2022 11:21

There is no weight or bmi or size of clothing that any individual could be overweight at as it's different for everyone.

At a higher bmi when a size 14, I am slim and healthy. Ie no rolls of fat as I naturally carry alot of muscle.

Also if I weighed what my bmi said I should i would be underweight. I'm 5 foot 7.

For instance. My slim healthy size 10 sister weighs 11 stone as does my slim friend.

I never go by bmi or by clothes size. For health, waist and tummy measurement is a much better guide.

Also bmi is based on a small sample of mainly European men and some women. How does that benefit the rest of the world?

ReneBumsWombats · 11/09/2022 11:22

Overweight is defined by your BMI, not your dress size or measurements.

It's a blunt instrument and hardly the only measure of health. But if you are overweight on BMI, you'll know if that's because you're a heavyweight boxer or the more common reason.

steppon · 11/09/2022 11:23

@katepilar it's weird isn't it. Plus clothes sizes are so random, I have 8s & 14s in my wardrobe. I knew someone desperate to be a size 10 which meant a strict regime as they were tall & bigger framed. She wouldn't buy something if it didn't fit her in a 10. I remember picking up size 10 trousers in H&M & showing her how they were different sizes.

Don't be so ridiculous 😂

steppon · 11/09/2022 11:25

my size 16 friend has a slimmer, flatted tummy then me, I have a really small frame & lots of padding so fit into smaller sizes. I need to be about 8 stone to have a similar stomach (I'm just under 5ft 10).

SquirrelSoShiny · 11/09/2022 11:26

I'm 5'6 and am technically overweight at a14 but carry it well. Sadly I'm bigger atm!

Namechangefail123 · 11/09/2022 11:26

Sizes (and depending on body composition BMI too) are meaningless to an extent. I'm a size 6/8 and considered overweight by BMI (just barely but still).

Is a size 14 viewed as overweight?
Underroad · 11/09/2022 11:28

I’m 5’5”, one of those people who is way heavier than they look, lovely ok healthiest at a size 12 (I prefer a 10 because everything seems to fit better, but my face looks gaunt when I’m that size) and a size 14 is the tipping point where I start to look bigger than is right for my frame. Despite not being very tall, I have broad shoulders, large hands and feet, big hips etc so I suit a bit more weight than most, but I always know if I start having to buy 14s that I need make better food choices for a bit as it doesn’t suit me.

Alarchbach · 11/09/2022 11:29

I’m 5’5, a size 14 and most definitely overweight x

TheMadGardener · 11/09/2022 11:29

My sister is 5 feet 11 and very sporty. She is a size 14 and looks very slim, you can see her hip bones and everything.
I'm 5 feet 10 and a size 16/18, I am overweight.
