To have not let my DD go to school in a Primark seamless set

Just that really. It’s non uniform day in school and she wanted to wear a crop top and those godawful see through leggings.

Shes worn mini skirts , ripped jeans etc into no uniform days before so i am not madly strict on clothes . The school is not overly strict but are quite hot on wearing the correct uniform, but these sets are just dreadful, and around our way worn by a certain group of teens which I don’t really want my DD hanging out with.

She went nuts , DH went nuts

Were we unreasonable

Shell suits came a bit later than the cycle shorts in my memory? But yes must have been a fire hazard!

The blue one in your picture looks a bit like PJs!

Id just let them pleased themselves tbh

A pp further up mentioned wearing a CND symbol- I remember everyone wearing those a few years later (early 90s).

The only 'types' of girls that wear these are the types that like these clothes. They're not any kind of homogeneous group, this is a very typical and popular look for many teens.
It's a bit eye popping for some of us (especially the flesh toned ones!!) but we shouldn't draw any judgement or value from it.
Fashion's come and go - this one, as someone has already said was popular in the 80's (remember Mel and Kim?) I remember wearing long stretchy skirts which had ruching on the bum and didn't really leave much to the imagination!
There's a whole conversation around the male gaze but that's not at the forefront of most young girls minds who want to fit in with friends.
Plus, I would imagine that these are very comfy!

@Beamur I remember those skirts!!! I was too small and skinny and could not get one to fit!

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/09/2022 15:28

My same aged dd wouldn’t be seen dead in coloured leggings. But she’d wear the top and has the short-sleeved version of the top in a different colour. It isn’t see through, just ultra tight and a bit low cut therefore I wouldn’t be ok for dd to wear the top to school.

The leggings (they’re actually named tights as they’re very fitted) are fine as long as her bum is partially covered to about the hip with a jacket or top. So I would say fine if she paired this with either a full length t-shirt or a partially zipped up full-length hoody to hide the belly flesh.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 09/09/2022 15:28

Definitely not appropriate for school. If she wants to put it on display at the weekends fine, same as workwear rules really.

Crispynoodle · 09/09/2022 15:30

I work in a FE college and have seen fashions come and go but these thin/ can see your thong lines/ have to see jiggling buttocks all day long leggings are so revealing I hate them!

EddieHowesBlackandWhiteArmy · 09/09/2022 15:42

This thread is awful. Ugh. ‘Those teens’. Judgemental much? What is wrong with the sets that the OP describes? Too alluring for the male gaze? Because I bet they’re comfy for the girls wearing them.

if the school doesn’t like it let them enforce that rule but before I’d supported I’d be making them explain exactly what the issue is.

It’s interesting how different everyone’s views are

its this kind of thing but more see through

I wouldn’t be happy they are see through, but otherwise I don’t see the problem. It’s not the style my DDs wear, but they wear denim hot pants and very low cargo trousers, so no better really.

Brideandpredjudice · 09/09/2022 15:50

arthurfowlermood · 09/09/2022 11:50

Also those sets are absolutely NOT see through.

Yes they are. You are wrong.

No they are not, the pic of the ones I put up are NOT see through because my daughter has 3 different sets.

arthurfowlermood · 09/09/2022 16:03

NOT see through.

NOT see through.

How do you know? You can see a picture from far off. What about when she moves or sits down?

Regardless, OP has already said that her daughter's is see though.

holidaynightmare · 09/09/2022 16:29

Dramachameleon · 09/09/2022 09:01

She’s 14

I mean she's not old enough to earn her own money so why are you buying items like this????

LondonWolf · 09/09/2022 16:37

My dd is 16, no way would she have been allowed to wear that at 14, probably not even now! But she wouldn't want to now I don't think. She seems to have grown out of the skimpy clothing stage and has quite a quirky, retro look now, which looks great on her. YANBU.

Because I live with her, she moves and sits down in my house 😂

Dramachameleon · 09/09/2022 16:45

@arthurfowlermood tbey are black leggings so different and I would guess that those items are a different brand and different quality. Either way the look is totally different to the pastel see through ones

@Mummyoflittledragon This is what I said - the top with any other bottoms or the bottoms with a top that is longer.

@newmum1976 Mine also wear denim hot pants, minis etc but this is a different look imo

My daughter has the fawn set and the deep cerise set from Primark, they are not see through, I'd imagine if it was white or very pale pink you might see dark underwear through it alright.

We have to be careful what our girls wear. I was some when young. Short skirts etc. Sadly there are individuals who assault youngsters who dress provocatively. A thoughtful chat is better than lots of yelling.

arthurfowlermood · 09/09/2022 14:56

@SudocremOnEverything How old are your sons?

toddler, teenager, young adult.

The young adult is now totally in charge of what he wears. But I have refused to take him out unless he left his coat or put on a clean hoody in the past.

That's fair enough especially about the dirty hoody.

People don’t assault them because of what they wear. 🙄

Nice victim blaming shite there. Individuals assault other individuals because they’re cunts. Not because they’re wearing leggings and a crop top.

thing47 · 09/09/2022 17:10

My two DDs are gym bunnies and spend most of their time at home in clothes like that, ready for the next session. I don't think they are suitable for school, though, and I don't their schools would have allowed it, so YANBU @Dramachameleon
