To think that at some point people will have to say that Brexit was never a good idea

We are sinking as a country and only a very few people are better off since Brexit. It seems to me like an experiment that hasn't worked. AIBU to think that it's odd that it's hardly mentioned as one of the reasons why everything is so bleak right now? Even Liz Truss thought it was a bad idea at the time.

One day, people will have to stop conflating the negatives of Brexit, with the many other unrelated negative things that are happening.

But it is not this day!

Mywatchis · 07/09/2022 16:39

Agree no one ever mentions it now, funny that ..

BlackberrySky · 07/09/2022 16:42

I work in an industry massively affected by Brexit, so have spent the last six years saying that Brexit is a destructive, shit idea. So has everyone I know. The idiocy of Brexit and those who voted for it is a staple conversation topic.

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/09/2022 16:46

A lot of people really struggle to admit they were wrong.

To be fair people were quite conned as well I think and what they were told v reality wasn't all true

A lot of people really struggle to admit they were wrong.

Sunk cost fallacy.

a lot has happened in the last few years that has also affected the country but that’s had more of an impact distracting and masking the problems caused by brexit.

Grumpsy · 07/09/2022 16:51

Probably, but whether it will be in our life time is an entirely different question 🤦🏻‍♀️

AlisonDonut · 07/09/2022 16:54

I said it the day the result was announced and practically every day since. 'Why don't you move to Europe if you love it so much' people said. So I did, last year.

I still say that Brexit is the stupidest most ridiculously self-destructive thing that the UK ever did. I say it daily to the OH. Many of us say it regularly. There is no shame in having voted to stay and to be proven 100% correct.

Chevyimpala67 · 07/09/2022 16:55

You'll be hard placed to find anyone who admits to voting for brexshit in a few years when the reality of leaving the largest trading bloc in the world starts to bite..we haven't really left yet*

*the govt keep pushing back the dates on which their glorious new Albion is due...

Florelei · 07/09/2022 16:55

I’m on holiday in Spain and we can no longer use our data etc on our phones out here for free like we could before brexit.

so I was just saying today that I couldnt actually identify a single benefit of brexit.

QuentininQuarantino · 07/09/2022 16:55

I think the convenient other ills that have befallen the rest of Europe are a fantastic smokescreen for Brexiters to hide behind, and combined with the doubling-down of people who do not like admitting to being wrong, will mean it is at least a decade before it starts to be acknowledged as a big fuck up.

heatissweet · 07/09/2022 16:55

'Why don't you move to Europe if you love it so much' people said. So I did, last year.

Not an option for me (because of dcs) but I think now we can't just move without EU citizenship anyway?

The facts are that we are now below India and are the world's 7th largest economy- down from 5th in 2016.

We have the lowest growth of all G7 nations.

Once the ukraine war is over and the global recession recedes the true damage to the UK will be clear

MarshaBradyo · 07/09/2022 16:59

I’d be interested to know how many who voted Leave do regret it - and hear from those who don’t

These threads don’t get many leave vote responses usually

heatissweet · 07/09/2022 17:00

It's very sad isn't it. It really doesn't feel like the country it once was at all.

Even if they don't, they've unfortunately inflicted it on everyone else

Quite a large number of leaver voters are now dead (old age/covid)

The demographic of leave voters/voting areas was very clear;
Poor educational attainment
Over 65
In areas with little or no immigration

But if you point that out, leavers get quite shirty 🤷‍♀️

Vikinga · 07/09/2022 17:04

The morons I know who voted for brexshit still think it was a great idea, despite suffering for it.

But tbh next to climate change, this is nothing. The world is burning and flooding, our eco systems are collapsing and our leaders are continuing to fund fossil fuels. All this is also driving up the cost of living.

Abhannmor · 07/09/2022 17:06

Nobody born this century voted for it. Maybe when my age group have shuffled off the stage things will improve. Generation X came of age in the boom. They'll be OK. It's the Millenials and the next cohort I feel sorry for.

MargaretThursday · 07/09/2022 17:08

It'll be in the history books in about 50 years time. Oh well, at least BJ can rest easy assured that he will be infamous in history lessons.

You can’t possibly say that brexit has failed - we are still going through the process. Turning the ship will take time. The final analysis won’t be able to be judged for at least another 5-10 years.

nutellachurro · 07/09/2022 17:12

80% of the brexit voters I am acquainted with have already started doing this - which is a good sign I suppose

Antarcticant · 07/09/2022 17:13

In my experience, Brexiteers have an endless stream of complicated reasons why any present problems are not due to Brexit. They usually blame Tony Blair.

I'm really not sure that enough people would have voted leave if you told them that they had to wait a minimum of 16 years to get potential benefit and in the meantime things were going to get much harder, do you?
