To re home the kitten

So, since getting our kitten my DH has been really struggling with his asthma. My Dd and I love him to absolute bits and don’t want to re home him! Please any suggestions? He said he hasn’t stopped sneezing and can feel it in his lungs. I’m actually devastated because obviously DH comes first

He was out most of last night in the middle of the night I could hear him puttering around. Just worried he is stuck and hungry?

It's odd to not see him at all, if he's been out and about before.

Has he got outside? Used his litter tray?
Where was he when you saw him last?

Asperia · 06/09/2022 19:55

I've been your husband's position. Rehome the cat. Asthma gets worse when continually bombarded with its allergen. It's terrifying not being able to breathe, you have no idea how much worse you are going to get.

BadNomad · 06/09/2022 20:01

Do you mean he's outside of the house?

Holliego · 06/09/2022 20:04

No, there is a little hole at the bottom
of the bath and I think he has gone in there because I can hear his bell on his collar? Is he stuck?

All the bath panels are sealed so I can’t get to him

She said when you have allergic asthma, different inhalers can help the symptoms

I have allergic asthma, am on a high level of treatment and do you know what really works?

Not being around the stuff I'm allergic too.

I've walked into a room with aromatherapy sticks in and needed a week of oral steroids. No inhaler in the world is going to sort that.

Holliego · 06/09/2022 20:06

He is only 12 weeks

Pop some smelly food near the hole. He'll come to it and hopefully squeeze out.

We had a kitten trapped up a tree. Some tinned mackerel warmed in the microwave to get it smellier helped him brave the descent.

Holliego · 06/09/2022 20:09

Yes but really doesn’t seem to be that bad?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 06/09/2022 20:10

You could use your husband to find the kitten. Just point him nose first into corners and see whether he sneezes.

SnowWhite13 · 06/09/2022 20:16

I have had cats all my life. I also have chronic asthma. I take 4 different antihistamines every single day. I also have an inhaler for when things get really bad. No way in hell am I giving up my furbabies. It's just not going to happen. They are there for me when everyone else has bailed. So 🤷 The cats stay, period.

As far as your not so DH, he's never home anyway and now he's just using your kitten, that he KNOWS you and your daughter are both attached to, as his excuse for not coming home! Except you know, just like he does, that ain't the reason why he's not coming home when he should.

As far as allergy meds go, he can absolutely go to the doctor and get an allergy shot/shots! If the over the counter antihistamines aren't getting it done, the allergy shots will! My mom is also allergic and she has 5 cats! She's gets allergy shots! So does my bff's husband! He gets allergy shots so that he can handle being around their two furbabies! So your DH is just using it as a bs excuse. That's all it is. A bs excuse for control. Don't give in to that.

You'll be able to tell that a lot better than us tbf OP!

Holliego · 06/09/2022 20:21

If he got in he can get out right? He hasn’t had a drink or anything?

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/09/2022 20:25

Cats are very flexible. Their collar bones float in their chests so they can squeeze through tight gaps.

Holliego · 06/09/2022 21:23

He hasn’t had any antihistamines or anything and he seems absolutely fine! Just like he normally is?

You've had as much advice as anyone give here, op. Think this is a decision you and your husband need to come to together.

No one is going to tell you to make him live with an allergy that triggers his asthma. If you think he's exaggerating or making it up for point scoring then that's a different issue entirely and I don't see how any of us can tell the difference.

wellhelloitsme · 06/09/2022 23:27

OP is the kitten free yet?

OP is the kitten free yet?

As in free from the bath, not free as in 'available'!

whynotwhatknot · 08/09/2022 23:17

did you get your cat out

Farmmum77 · 08/09/2022 23:30

We have an air purifier which really helps, my son is allergic and we have 6 cats and he was very poorly but now we use the air purifier he’s much better and is hardly effected

Justanotherlittlename · 23/10/2022 19:38

what did you do @Holliego ?

Rainbowx · 23/10/2022 22:50

Any updates op ?

Cw112 · 23/10/2022 22:55

If its only been a few days I'd be inclined to wait and see how you go. I'm a bit allergic to my cat, I initially had two weeks of itchy eyes sneezing etc when I first got him but then I acclimatised and was fine to the point where I'd only get that reaction if I was away from him for a week or two the first day I returned. Now I don't get a reaction at all. Dh is the same would have sneezed and used antihistamines when visiting before we lived together and now he doesn't need them anymore. We hoover and dust regularly to keep on top of pet dander and brush our cat most days. We also keep our bedrooms completely cat free and air our rooms out as often as we can that really helps. If after a week or two it hasn't got better or he's getting worse then I'd get him to talk to the gp about longer term options for antihistamines before deciding what to do.
