To re home the kitten

So, since getting our kitten my DH has been really struggling with his asthma. My Dd and I love him to absolute bits and don’t want to re home him! Please any suggestions? He said he hasn’t stopped sneezing and can feel it in his lungs. I’m actually devastated because obviously DH comes first

Oh and DCat isn't allowed in the bedroom

Summerishere123 · 05/09/2022 22:18

How long have you had the kitten?
I was allergic to ours for a few weeks. Even now need to take antihistamines occasionally and sometimes use an inhaler.

JustBkind · 05/09/2022 22:20

What about an air purifier in the room he uses most? Like others have said, antihistamines/inhaler otherwise.

Thehop · 05/09/2022 22:22

I was illaboit the first few months of our cats arriving. I have asthma too. They had dander on from their foster house so I bathed that off with damp towels and a good brush glove. I took antihistamines, I kept them out of my bedroom. Over time, o got desensitised to them, took about 3 months.

og one of them lays on my neck too long or I get fit in my eye or mouth I can still have a reaction but it isn’t strong enough to stop me living with them if that makes sense? I definitely got better.

I think a lot of people on here are far too dismissive of pet allergies. I had the rehome my oh/childrens budgies a few years back. We got two having no idea that I was allergic. I wasn’t dangerously allergic so took ALL of the allergy remedies, and for almost 3 years tolerated rashes, itchy skin, runny eyes and nose etc. Every single day I was uncomfortable and miserable in my own house. I only stopped feeling guilty about putting my foot down when I completely lost my sense of taste even on the rare occasions that my nose was clear. Like fuck was I never tasting food again over pet budgies. It’s not always as simple as just ‘go get meds from the doctor you vile human being for even considering giving up your beloved animals’ 🙄

knackeredagain · 05/09/2022 22:25

How long have you had the kitten? I was allergic to my cat when we first brought him home, and I’m allergic to other people’s but not him anymore.

Holliego · 05/09/2022 22:31

Only a few days.

DH and I have not been getting on recently as he just does as he pleases. Contributes financially but that’s about it.

I’ve just ordered petacleanse from Amazon

Took me 3 weeks to acclimatise when we got a cat. Same every time we had a cat free gap.

Holliego · 05/09/2022 22:02

Are there ways in which he can overcome this? Managed by medicine? I don’t know much about allergies tbh. I could cry I am that gutted

Would you really have your dh dope himself up for the rest of his natural, just so he can live in his own home?

Thistleinthenight · 05/09/2022 22:34

I'm not sure it's fair to expect him to take medication so that there can be a cat in the house. Sorry, but it's better to rehome.

Janesdufflecoat · 05/09/2022 22:36

When I first get my cats my asthma is quite bad, use my inhalers etc but it soon settles down! My first cat had for 14 years & I was absolutely fine with him other than the first few weeks!
Then 2 rescues arrived same again, antihistamines, blue inhaler but again I am fine now!
I hoover & dust regularly!

ScamelaAnderson · 05/09/2022 22:36

Honestly? You need to ort out your marriage. You deliberately got a cat knowing your dh is allergic to them - why? And now you say you would rather have a cat than him?
Poor guy!

Bingbangbongbash · 05/09/2022 22:37

How long have you had it? I had cats growing up then when I moved out and returned to visit, I was allergic. I got sneezeds, right throat, chesty feeling and so on. It would take a few weeks to settle but it did settle, and then I was fine. I hope this happens to your DH. It’s no fun at all but worth it for the fun the cat brings!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 05/09/2022 22:38

Is he actually reacting or is he claiming to out of spite?

I had an ex who was allergic to any animal he thought we liked better than him (like all of them) but strangely had no reaction at all to his bit on the side's pets.

Holliego · 05/09/2022 22:38

So many varied opinions on this but I didn’t know he was allergic, I knew he had asthma though.

Did he not realise he was allergic?

Holliego · 05/09/2022 22:40

He has just told me he doesn’t like cats either so why the bloody bell would he agree to getting one. He said he couldn’t help seeing our DD so happy.

It's not like that for most people. Mostly you just get better after a short while. I know for some people it can be worse but I think you owe an animal a decent try

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 05/09/2022 22:41

Good breeders always have them
back!!

...tell MIL to expect DH on her doorstep! 🤣🤣

kitten aside, do you seriously think you should end your marriage if you feel DH is a twat & never there?

if you do, next time he says it's making him want to not come home... tell him you'll be getting another one then.

AnnaMagnani · 05/09/2022 22:42

Kitten has to go. Asthma kills people, it's not a simple matter of him taking a bit more blue inhaler and he'll be fine. By the time you can feel shortness of breath or start to cough, there is already significant inflammation in your lungs.

You and DH need to go to marriage guidance as a separate issue.

notdaddycool · 05/09/2022 22:45

The cat goes

Shiningstarr · 05/09/2022 22:46

My DH and I got a kitten about 15 years ago, I'm not normally allergic to cats but this particular one set my asthma off. I tried antihistamine, hoovering, cleaning, keeping kitten in different room, nothing worked.

I had several bad asthma attacks and eventually ended up in hospital it was that serious. I realised as much as I hated it I had to re-home the kitten so my mum had it.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 05/09/2022 22:47

I had to do exactly the same.

I should say that I didn't want the kitten in the first place, my husband thought it was a good idea. Fuck knows why...

But my allergies and asthma were absolutely dreadful. We'd only had the cat a week, but he was killing me, bless him.

And yet, despite it all, I didn't want to give him away, cos it felt glib. Just like, oh, I didn't want him anymore.
I have a black cynical heart, but i confess that i shed a tear when he left.

We gave him away to a friend who was going to take another kitten from the same litter, but it all worked out well in the end.

BadNomad · 05/09/2022 22:48

Don't experiment with asthma. If the cat is triggering it, then that is incredibly dangerous.
