To wonder why some people really enjoy this heat?

I’m sweating, I feel anxious, I’ve got a headache and I feel sick. This is what this kind of heat does to me. It’s like torture. There’s no way to cool down properly, unlike in the winter when you can warm up with a blanket and hot water bottle.

I’m actually wondering if it’s a genetic thing. Feels like some people actually enjoy laying in this heat out in the sunshine.

I love it. I don't ache as I'm totally relaxed, not hunched up against the cold.

ScarlettDarling · 11/08/2022 15:33

I used to love the heat, now I really don’t. Just about coped when I was on holiday because I could lie in the shade, go in the pool and retreat into the air conditioning but I’m finding this heatwave really hard going.
I sat in my garden in the shade at about 10 o clock this morning and it was beautiful. Now it’s ferocious and I’m a sweaty mess. My two teenagers haven’t ventured out of their bedrooms (no change there!) My dh on the other hand loves it and can sit out all day with just the odd ten mins inside for cooling down.

mylittleyumyum · 11/08/2022 15:36

I live for it. Currently working in my garden, laptop on my knee in the shade, top half in the glorious sun.

When my husband comes home we'll go for our usual 4 mile walk, then come home and have a frozen mojito in the garden.

I will sleep easily tonight, with one leg sticking out from under my duvet.

The sun and heat make me happy. People complaining about it make me sad.

I holiday abroad in the winter just to get my fix. In the summer we spend two weeks somewhere with guaranteed 30's temps. As soon as I can I'm leaving the UK and moving somewhere hot.

MeridasMum · 11/08/2022 15:36

"Feels like some people actually enjoy laying in this heat out in the sunshine."

This seems like a really odd thing to say. Of course some people enjoy it. Are you suggesting they don't or shouldn't? Different people like different things

Reflectionson · 11/08/2022 15:38

@MeridasMum I suppose I just can’t understand how people enjoy sweating and feeling hugely overheated.

I'm loving it and have yet to hear anyone moaning. It's a case of "I know we need the rain, but isn't it lovely?" Last summer was grey and damp and it's great having a spell of gorgeous weather.

@MeridasMum I suppose I just can’t understand how people enjoy sweating and feeling hugely overheated.

But not everyone feels overheated.

Just because you feel something, it doesn't mean that everyone does. But I'm sure you already know that

girlfriend44 · 11/08/2022 15:40

pointless post.

If you get hot stay in the shade or the house. Sooner have the choice. Dont worry you can come back next week and say does anyone like the rain?

100problems · 11/08/2022 15:40

I love it. Sorry if you don't. I simply adjust to extreme weather by channeling lifestyles in v hot or v cold countries. Plus I love going to bed knowing it'll be sunny the following day.

10HailMarys · 11/08/2022 15:42

I think it's just a personal preference, rather than genetics, perhaps? My dad and my brother both love the heat, my mum quite likes it too. And my sister used to like it before she started getting menopausal hot flushes all the time, but I don't really like it much. I don't sick and anxious but I hate being hot and sweaty, I burn really easily, sunscreens are sticky and horrible, and I'm prone to prickly heat. DP and his mum don't like it, but his sister would sit out in it all day if she could.

PoolSquid · 11/08/2022 15:42

It's not that I enjoy sweating and feeling too hot as I'm not sat sweating and feeling too hot. I enjoy not feeling too cold for a change.

Numbat2022 · 11/08/2022 15:42

People are just made differently. And you get used to the heat, if you grow up somewhere hot it's usually more bearable than a UK-based childhood.

Personally I hate it, we holiday in spring and autumn to avoid this heat and I'd be happy if it never went above about 25 degrees.

Vates · 11/08/2022 15:43

YANBU. I just sweat and overheat, it's torture. Whereas I love cooler temperatures. Although we haven't had a 'cold' Winter since the beast from the east storm some years back. Literally no minus temperatures, frost, snow settling, etc. I hope it follows suit and is that mild again this year just for Gas top ups.

Gastropod · 11/08/2022 15:43

I don't get overheated unless it's much hotter, or very humid, and stays that way for sustained periods of time. I do stay out of the midday heat though, not completely crazy!
I love the sun, the warmth on my skin, the lovely summer clothes and bare toes, eating outdoors in the evenings...
Plus, my arthritis doesn't hurt nearly as much when the weather is like this, so it's an added bonus to be able to walk for sustained periods of time.
I have a old-fashioned folding paper fan that I keep in my bag for when I'm out and about, and have big, powerful electric fans in various rooms in the house. I hate feeling cold and damp, much prefer this!

Justcallmebebes · 11/08/2022 15:43

I love it but then I grew up in the tropics so it's like home for me

Plump82 · 11/08/2022 15:44

I love it because 99% of the year the weather is rubbish where I am.

MotherofPearl · 11/08/2022 15:44

Don't worry OP, you're not alone. I'm really struggling too. No matter how much water I drink I can't shift my low level headache, and I dread having to leave the comfort of my relatively cool house. I am counting the days until the end of the heatwave.

Northernsoullover · 11/08/2022 15:44

Emotionally its bringing me joy. I love the sunrise, the sunset and not having to wear layers. Physically? Nope. I'm fine at the moment but it's impossible to wander around and my bedroom is in the loft and will be 30 degrees by tonight. Then I will be hating it.
I'm abroad next week and of course the weather is a draw. The difference being I can get in the pool and retreat to an air conditioned room.

Crazykatie · 11/08/2022 15:44

I love it, my OH worries because I stay out too long, he likes the heat but is fair skinned and stays in the shade mostly.

TheChippendenSpook · 11/08/2022 15:45

As a naturally cold person, I absolutely love it! It's amazing to feel lovely and warm.

pierpoint · 11/08/2022 15:45

I hate it to Pp. I'm counting down the weeks to winter. My favourite time of year

FlorettaB · 11/08/2022 15:46

I love going walking on days where you can see your breath and the ground crunches with frost. I don’t wear a hat or gloves unless it’s minus temperatures. I open the windows in my house every morning , though I do shut them sooner in the winter. Some people hate the cold. Not everyone is the same.

TeaStory · 11/08/2022 15:46

Because I don’t feel sweaty and overheated. I feel good.

In cooler temperatures, my hands turn blue, my joints hurt like hell and I sit hunched over shivering and miserable. In this weather I feel comfortable with very little pain and no goosebumps. I’m not having to resort to layers of blankets and scalding baths to warm up. Right now I’m outside in the shade in a t-shirt and cotton skirt, feeling like I’m finally at a comfortable temperature - which happens very rarely!

actiongirl1978 · 11/08/2022 15:46

I've adjusted. Once there's been a few days of it, I love it.

I've just done 90 mins of agressive weeding, and come in to cool down with an ice pop.

However our house stays very cool and we live near a river so this morning it was misty and cold walking the dogs.

As long as the night times are cool which they are, I can cope. I don't like it as much when it's over 20deg at night. We are in the south and it was 14deg when I went out this morning.

I love wearing shorts and a vest every day and as pp said, its great knowing it will be sunny when you wake up.
