To wonder why some people really enjoy this heat?

I’m sweating, I feel anxious, I’ve got a headache and I feel sick. This is what this kind of heat does to me. It’s like torture. There’s no way to cool down properly, unlike in the winter when you can warm up with a blanket and hot water bottle.

I’m actually wondering if it’s a genetic thing. Feels like some people actually enjoy laying in this heat out in the sunshine.

I'm not sweating or overheated. I'm relaxed and warm and the bits of me which ache when it's cold aren't aching and I can wear my pretty clothes and bare feet or sandals and outside smells nice and floral and I can even go swimming in the sea which is the best thing ever.

I am working on my laptop in the garden right now, wearing a big hat for shade and a floaty dress in batik fabric and I feel genuinely incredibly content. In general, btw, I hardly ever sweat. I might if I went for a run or something. But not just sitting still.

Oblomov22 · 11/08/2022 15:49

Doesn't bother me. Working at home, just been to Tesco. What's the problem?

SpringRainbow · 11/08/2022 15:50

I don’t enjoy this heat, once it starts getting around 30c I hate going outside. I will try and stay inside as much as possible.

However, it doesn’t start to feel like torture to me until we get to the point where we get no relief at night.

The heatwave in July was horrible for me because it was just as hot during the day as it was at night. I just found sleeping almost impossible.

I’m hoping this time that since it’s not going to be as hot this time that we will get some relief at night.

BaronessBomburst · 11/08/2022 15:51

I love it. It's 32c here and I've been out on my bike and I'm now going to do a bit of weeding. I spend winters cold and miserable with stiff and aching joints. I'm active and have energy when it's warm.

BeyondMyWits · 11/08/2022 15:52

It's fine if you have nothing to do, but I'm helping a friend rewire her cottage, that roof crawl space is hot! And it all has to be done by Monday when the wardrobe fitters arrive.People have to work in this. I feel sorry for those who find it hard to cope.

foghead · 11/08/2022 15:52

It's 30c here. It was cool in the morning so I opened the windows and back door to let all the cool air in. Theyre shut now along with the blinds, the fan is on in the living room and kitchen and it's fine.
No one is hot and sweaty here.
We'll go out for a walk later when it cools down a bit. Woods and forests are very cool and lovely to
Walk in.

ChickPizz · 11/08/2022 15:53

I get used to it after the initial shock of the first day or two. It doesn’t really affect me, other than make me a bit sleepy at work in the afternoon.

Crankley · 11/08/2022 15:55

Are you really so devoid of imagination or understanding that not everyone thinks/feels the same as you?

Even if you dislike it, at least realise it's within the realms of possibility that others may not.

waterlego · 11/08/2022 15:55

I don’t like it at all. Feel so sluggish and lethargic and everything feels like an effort. I sweat even just sitting still. Anything over about 25 is too hot for me. What I hate most is that it’s a constant reminder of how much we have fucked the planet. I’m terribly anxious about it all.

CuriousCatfish · 11/08/2022 15:56

I can't understand how people enjoy being cold. Funny how we are all different.

latetothefisting · 11/08/2022 15:59

But people are different?
I must admit I hate the heat and, tbh, have been reading all the threads worrying about energy costs confused because I wfh the last few winters perfectly happily in a hoody, with the heating only coming on if it was under 16 degrees (and not at all in the night). That doesn't mean I don't understand when someone says they were freezing cold wfh even with the heating on at 23 degrees sitting next to a radiator, or think there is something "wrong" with my gran going to bed in what feels to me like a sauna....I just accept other people feel heat/cold differently to me.

Also it depends what you.are doing in the heat. I would hate to be out running or a police officer on foot patrol in full uniform - but off work swimming or paddleboarding in the sea with a cold cider or wine I could just about cope with Smile

@MeridasMum I suppose I just can’t understand how people enjoy sweating and feeling hugely overheated.

But not everyone does feel overheated. What you're saying is like saying 'Why do people like apples, they taste gross, I don't understand.' To people who like apples, they don't taste gross.

As I said before, I'm not a massive fan of boiling hot weather - I'm sitting here feeling a bit hot and sticky at the moment and wishing there was a nice cool breeze. But I don't feel 'hugely overheated' and I went for a run in this weather yesterday. It was harder work than it would have been in cooler weather, but it was still do-able.

It's possible that some of the discomfort you're experiencing in the heat is more down to your anxiety about the heat, rather than the heat itself. It's very hot today but it's not unprecedented heat in this country. It's about ten degrees cooler than it was in the peak of last month's heatwave. Nausea and headaches, and excess sweating, could easily be partly a symptom of your anxiety rather than the heat.

Stellaris22 · 11/08/2022 16:02

I hate it too. I have a DH in the energy industry so fully aware of how awful winter will be. Bought thermals and a slow cooker.

But just going outside and struggling to breathe due to heat, unable to book activities as a family as it’s not safe in the heat is no fun. Both myself and DH have degrees in Env so it’s very scary.

Its not just ‘a bit of heat’, it’s the effects of climate change and it’s only going to get worse.

Subeccoo · 11/08/2022 16:03

Off to Egypt in a few days so its been great training for that!
I love it, but I'm aware I'm very lucky to live 5 minutes from the beach, where there is always that lovely seaside breeze no matter how hot it is.
I spend every spare minute in the sea, reading on the sand or cycling along the prom.
It can stay 😁

x2boys · 11/08/2022 16:04

mylittleyumyum · 11/08/2022 15:36

I live for it. Currently working in my garden, laptop on my knee in the shade, top half in the glorious sun.

When my husband comes home we'll go for our usual 4 mile walk, then come home and have a frozen mojito in the garden.

I will sleep easily tonight, with one leg sticking out from under my duvet.

The sun and heat make me happy. People complaining about it make me sad.

I holiday abroad in the winter just to get my fix. In the summer we spend two weeks somewhere with guaranteed 30's temps. As soon as I can I'm leaving the UK and moving somewhere hot.

It's different abroad though with air conditioning and a pool to cool off in I tok would enjoy the heat in those conditions.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 11/08/2022 16:05

I like it- people generally seem more laid back and happier. I have no lights on and no gas on- I can breath knowing my bills aren’t sky high. Also after 40 degree heat, 30 seems bearable.
the kids are in the sprinkler and having ice lollies- when it rains we have 1 option: soft play or stuck inside. It’s a thumbs up from me- well except for the flies

Thejugglestruggle · 11/08/2022 16:05

I don't mind it but I much prefer bright sunny but crisp autumn and winter days.
Different strokes for different folks I guess!

Dalaidramailama · 11/08/2022 16:06

Same hate it. I’ve got ginger skin and just feel sick with it.

Aposterhasnoname · 11/08/2022 16:06

I love it. It warns my aching bones, and bad back and I can feel the tension leaving me. If I get too warm, a cold shower. Then stand in front of a fan while still wet is glorious.

Dalaidramailama · 11/08/2022 16:07

i don’t like the humidity. Prefer hotter days in dryer heat I can tolerate that.

AclowncalledAlice · 11/08/2022 16:08

I'm loving it.

I suppose I just can’t understand how people enjoy sweating and feeling hugely overheated.

I can't understand how people enjoy putting on several layers of clothes and go out to play in the snow, then say stuff like "my face is freezing" whilst laughing about it. Yet a lot of people do exactly that because different strokes for different folks and all that.

littlepeas · 11/08/2022 16:09

I don't like the heat or the cold - much prefer the in-between seasons. I do like it when it is bright and sunny, but really don't enjoy the heat (so spring and autumn sunshine makes me much happier).

Key thing

Not everyone becomes super sweaty and overheats

I'm loving this weather

Am sat in the sun, not sweaty or overheated

CheeseMongrel · 11/08/2022 16:11

I think you’re getting some sass replies that aren’t actually answering your question of WHY some people can tolerate it and some can’t. I wonder this often as I feel physically ill when it’s above 30 and it completely zaps my energy levels. Yet other people report the heat gives them more energy - I’m aware everyone is different but what is it about my body/genetics that differs to those who feel great in the heat? Been upstairs trying to put washing away and felt myself going faint - (I’m not dehydrated I’ve been drinking shit tons of water) so the idea of going out for a bike ride or ‘aggressive weeding’ seems physically impossible 😂

tirednewmumm · 11/08/2022 16:12

Haha I loved it before I had a baby, now I'm lugging around a cranky sweaty toddler and not laying out drinking mimosas I'm less keen
