To wonder why some people really enjoy this heat?

I’m sweating, I feel anxious, I’ve got a headache and I feel sick. This is what this kind of heat does to me. It’s like torture. There’s no way to cool down properly, unlike in the winter when you can warm up with a blanket and hot water bottle.

I’m actually wondering if it’s a genetic thing. Feels like some people actually enjoy laying in this heat out in the sunshine.

I feel like the people saying they enjoy it mustn’t be experience if the same temperatures I am. There’s no way anybody can enjoy this.

Scaredypup · 11/08/2022 19:43

@sunshineandstrawberryjam i was by the sea yesterday. It’s nowhere near as hot so I can understand enjoying it in those circumstances.

Just having a cold drink doesn't actually cool you! It's refreshing but makes no difference at all if you're overheating. Absolutely ridiculous post.

Well, I don't know, put a wet flannel in the freezer or get a cold pack or something.

If I can manage wearing heavy trousers all day and alternating between sitting in a 40°+ cab and standing in direct sun wearing a hardhat, I'm sure the average person can get by sitting in the shade and using an ice cold towel.

I'm sure a few people are heat sensitive but I think a lot are just a bit over dramatic tbh.

waterlego · 11/08/2022 19:46

Oh, I get a sweaty face too. Specifically, my eyebrows seem to be the first place I sweat from. This happens with actual heat but also with spicy food.

@BertieBotts, I feel the same about the heat as you do, (though my thermostat is obviously set a bit different because 25 is my max comfortable temperature, and unlike you, I don’t really mind the cold). Like you, I can’t fathom how anyone can be comfortable lying sunbathing in direct sun. I can feel my skin burning (and yes, I do of course wear high SPF!)

It’s interesting to see from this thread how different we all are.

springisaroundthecorner · 11/08/2022 19:47

I have SAD in summer. The heat and bright sunlight really makes me feel depressed

LikeAStar1994 · 11/08/2022 19:48

We're in the minority I'm afraid. Summer is overrated. The only thing I like about it are the light nights.

I'm in the SE with temperatures over 30 degrees and loving it. I deliberately holiday in Greece and Turkey in July and August to enjoy the high temperatures. This sort of weather is honestly bliss for me - I've been hiding all the "too hot, can't wait for autumn" threads because the very thought depresses me.

The only time I've ever thought "ok, this might actually be a bit too warm" was in the Australian outback in December when the temperature was around 45 degrees.

SleeplessInEngland · 11/08/2022 20:12

If I was insane enough to like mid 30s heat I’d just move to another country. No shortage of options, and the other extreme of winter that lasts much longer here must be awful.

I would if I could! But I married a heat-hating man and had heat-hating children, so I'm stuck here for the foreseeable.

But you're right about winter being miserable. I was verging on suicidal last winter, I found it so hard. I thought there was something seriously wrong with me, I got so depressed. Pretty much as soon as the lighter nights started, my entire mood lifted. I'm getting a light box this autumn.

KevinTheKoala · 11/08/2022 20:30

I HATE the heat, I can't tolerate it in the same way that some people can't tolerate the cold. I get burnt easily, even if I'm wearing factor 50 and only taking a short walk to the shops, I get heat stroke easily and I just find it hard to breathe it's so claustrophobic. I understand not everyone feels that way, I don't stop others enjoying the heat - I don't understand it but they can do as they please. But I do think at least in winter there's the option to wrap up if you are cold in the summer there's nothing you can do to escape the heat. Inside isn't much cooler than outside, fans don't work all that well when the air is warm and while I feel like ripping my skin off that obviously can't happen. I find it hard to even enjoy taking my children anywhere because I'm so worried about them getting burnt/drinking enough and wasps!

duckme · 11/08/2022 20:45

It's horses for courses, isn't it? I find this heat very oppressive and I get very tetchy and short tempered. I am happiest at about 23 degrees. I'm pale and ginger and am just not built to cope in the heat. My kids, probably from a lifetime of shade dwelling with me, have little tolerance to it either. However we go on holiday next week and we're looking forward to hot sunny days by the pool and balmy evenings at a bar.
I love, love, love snowy days. I find it sad when people aren't as enthused by waking up to a blanket of snow as I am.

ellieboolou · 11/08/2022 20:50

@springisaroundthecorner me too!
That's exactly how i describe it as people always assume we must love summer.

Light from 4am - 10pm drives me crazy, my mood lifts from September till May, really dislike June, July & August. I also never holiday in peak seasons as can't take the heat. Had a big family holiday in Zante in July 2014 and it was 38 everyday, I spent most of my time in the hotel 🤣 never again!

daytriptovulcan · 11/08/2022 20:57

This heat is so sinister, and what's happening to the climate...really dont like it. A downpour would so cheer me up.

longestlurkerever · 11/08/2022 21:01

Does anyone who loves it live in London? I grew up up north and don't remember ever feeling the horrible sweaty oppressive heat of a London summer. Could not understand how anyone could possibly enjoy it when I moved here and still don't, though I love almost everything else about London.

longestlurkerever · 11/08/2022 21:02

Also, everything is dry and dead and feels like it's about to combust. Really unpleasant.

dementedma · 11/08/2022 21:06

I dont love being sticky and tired in the office but I do love being out in the garden in the sun,my limbs and face turning brown, wearing bright loose clothes, wearing shorts, being bare foot, the feel of the sun on my skin, blue skies, being able to do things outside, swimming on the sea, etc etc. Its wonderful and such a short period of time before rain and cold and grey days

I think it's the stickiness in particular that feels different to me.

SpeckofDustUponMySoul · 11/08/2022 21:10

Not everybody perspires heavily and dislikes the heat!
What a pointless post.
Not everybody is the same: therein lies the reason.
🙄

ClottedCreamAndStrawberries · 11/08/2022 21:11

It’s awful. I’ve actually had two seizures today as my epilepsy it’s worsened by the heat. I feel like crap and have been very sleepy for most of the day yet unable to cool down.

BertieBotts · 11/08/2022 21:12

This honestly boggles my mind so much! I think it every time I am in a car/bus going past people working outside, either in heat or cold. I don't know how they do it. I am very very lucky to live in modern times and be able to choose not to work outside. It's one of my number 1 job criteria.

I do manage hot days by staying indoors out of the heat and using cooling methods although this does not work if I need to be outside. I do literally plan my days around being outside as little as possible or only being in places which are shady, tree-covered, near water and keeping the stretches in direct sun to very minimal.

But I surprised myself - DH took us all to a lake that had no shade and I thought I'd be wimping out within 20 minutes but it was OK when I was in the water (just getting into the water took ages - anyone else temperature sensitive struggle with getting into cool water? DH laughs at me and says I'm "so British" - he is also British BTW.)

@waterlego my top comfortable temperature was 25 when I lived in the UK so I have stretched it a bit by living somewhere warmer! Or possibly the humidity in the UK makes 25 feel hotter. I do remember being there in June 2018 and it was 25 and DH and I were so confused why it felt so insanely hot when 25 would be quite comfortable here (or we are used to it).

ClottedCreamAndStrawberries · 11/08/2022 21:12

*is worsened

Abraxan · 11/08/2022 21:13

I prefer it to the cold.
It's 'only' about 30c here - the 40c was too much like last time - so more manageable.

I love the feeling of warmth on my skin. However, I need to be in the shade and I much prefer this heat when I can have access to zircon, such as on holiday, especially at night.

I like the evenings when its been warm/hot - being able to sit outside in the evening with a drink until the night draws in.

I don't like being very sweaty and find the night time trickier, but we have a very light cover, windows open, dark room, which helps.

The winter however I find painful. I have arthritis and my joints hurt a lot when cold. Just adding more clothes doesn't help - its the ambience cold and the related cold damp that goes with it that causes the issues. I spend the winters taking increased medication and needing steroid injections.

luckylavender · 11/08/2022 21:13

I can cope with it far better than I ever used to but I don't really enjoy this very hot weather.
