To wonder why some people really enjoy this heat?

I’m sweating, I feel anxious, I’ve got a headache and I feel sick. This is what this kind of heat does to me. It’s like torture. There’s no way to cool down properly, unlike in the winter when you can warm up with a blanket and hot water bottle.

I’m actually wondering if it’s a genetic thing. Feels like some people actually enjoy laying in this heat out in the sunshine.

Such a miserable post! We live on a cold rainy island - let us enjoy a hot summer FGS

Nunckybunchchuck · 11/08/2022 16:12

Keep drinking room temperature water OP!

Pheobe863 · 11/08/2022 16:16

I'm like you, OP. I despise hot weather. I hate feeling sweaty, I hate wearing summer clothes, I hate my car feeling like a sauna when I get in it, I hate working with no air con and no fans, I hate being unable to sleep because I'm so hot, I hate feeling like I smell because I'm sweaty, I hate getting headaches, I hate that my house is full of bugs because the windows need to be open, I hate the greasy feeling of sun cream but hate sunburn even more, I hate feeling like I constantly need a shower, I hate heat rash, I hate that I'm so hot I completely lose my appetite... On it goes....

I think you may be right that it's genetics or something. I can't wrap my head around how people enjoy this weather, but others probably don't understand why I love clouds and rain. Heat makes me anxious. Cloudy, cold, overcast days make me breathe a sigh of relief. No idea why.

PrettyasaPainting · 11/08/2022 16:16

I'm in 33° heat in Greece at the moment and I'm a shade hogger. I absolutely love the warm weather when you have means to cool down and don't have to do too much.
But I watch people lie in full sun all day long and wonder how on earth they can cope with it, I certainly can't.
At home it just makes me lazy, I can't be bothered to do anything, and I don't wake up or feel energetic until dusk.

Justdontgetit000 · 11/08/2022 16:19

I think rather than it being purely about genetics, it’s mostly down to these three things:

HEALTH STATUS
MEDICATION
ENVIRONMENT

I bloody hate it too op!

cardibach · 11/08/2022 16:19

See, for me this isn’t true, @Reflectionson unlike in the winter when you can warm up with a blanket and hot water bottle
All that does is make whichever bit of me is by the bottle hot, the bits under the blanket barely warm and everything else - face, hands, shoulder, whatever - exactly the same as if I didn’t have the blanket. Cold is grim and not everyone can warm up easily.

waterbluesorcer · 11/08/2022 16:21

It's one of the beauties of U.K. living to me - the seasons. I love each season for different reasons. Everyone is different and will like different times of the year more than others 🤷‍♀️

I like hot and sunny weather, but not when I'm working (hospital, uniform, face mask 🥵) I also love cosy winter days.

@MeridasMum I suppose I just can’t understand how people enjoy sweating and feeling hugely overheated.

I don't feel like that though. I feel snuggly and fine. My circulation is so poor* that the blood retreats from my extremities at roughly 22 degrees. My bones and joints ache. I don't enjoy the cold at all and generally the UK temperature is not often above 22 degrees. So a lot of the year I'm quietly in pain, it's not pleasant.

I feel sorry for you though, it must be really rough feeling ill in hotter temperatures.

*Once when donating blood it was cool enough in the portakabin for the blood flow in my arm to stop. I don't know what the blood transfusion service did with my puny half litre.

Sceptre86 · 11/08/2022 16:22

I'm enjoying it whilst at home on maternity, baby almost 1. If I was working in it I'd probably feel differently. As it is I'm dressed for the weather stating hydrated and having a nice time. It improves my mood.

Nobody is stopping you from enjoying it.

Dizzyhedgehog · 11/08/2022 16:23

I love it. I've always loved it. On the other hand, I hate being cold. When we moved abroad, we had the choice between here and Spain. Would have loved to go and live in Spain but DH was worried about how he'd cope with the summer temperatures.
We've got a pool in the garden, mosquito nets around the dining table to keep the wasps away, a fire pit, an outdoor sofa. I'm so glad we are getting to enjoy it this year. It's been 30+ degrees for a few weeks now. Last year was OK but quite rainy. We don't have air conditioning but our bedrooms are at garden level in the basement and stay naturally cool. I don't get sweaty easily and I don't tend to overheat.
On the other hand, I don't particularly like winter. I can enjoy the snow and the rather crisp -20 degrees for a while...but weeks of it get me down. I get cold easily, so have to put thermals on. During the colder motnhs, our heating is set to 16 degrees in the day, with slightly higher temperatures when we are home in the morning and evening. I still need to wear a jumper and fluffy socks to make me feel warm enough.
I'd rather be in the sun in my shorts and t-shirt.

KittenKong · 11/08/2022 16:25

DH loves it. My parents lover really hot weather. I don’t like it myself but I work from home so can sit in a sun dress, open all the windows and put a fan on. If I don’t have to go out in the midday sun, I don’t, but live walking in the evening when it’s coolers and you get a warm breeze.

of course I feel very sorry for those suffering or having to work outside/in uniforms.

mewkins · 11/08/2022 16:26

I've just come back from 42c heat! I love these cool days 😁

roarfeckingroarr · 11/08/2022 16:26

I usually love it but pregnancy makes me really intolerant to strong, direct sunlight and above 30 degrees. I had it during my first pregnancy in 2020 too.

So I get both sides.

Hbh17 · 11/08/2022 16:28

I love being warm, & hot weather just knocks me out and I sleep brilliantly - in PJs and under a duvet!

MintJulia · 11/08/2022 16:31

I love it. It puts me in a good mood, being warm all the time.

I love lying with the windows open in the dark listening to the night sounds or at 5am listening to the birds, and not be cold.

I can live in shorts and a linen top and a pair of flipflops - my natural clothing

I don't need to cook, I can live off salad and bread and cold meat or tinned fish and not get hungry because I'm not using much energy. It's bliss. 😊

microbius · 11/08/2022 16:32

It's one of those threads which will probably run into multiple pages with not much meaningful discussion but as a foreigner I think it is to a large extent a matter of habit. English people are not used to the heat; and this is the sole reason many can't cope with it.

I am used to hot summers as I grew up with hot summers. In heat, you dress and behave differently. It's also ok to be sweaty and feel hot, I can accept it as a body experience. If you stop thinking this is abnormal but embrace it, it just becomes a different sensation. If you have hot summers, you kind of have different life in the summer, it feels like a real break to the rut run of the year and because your body feels different, it is like having a different kind of life. Even without going on vacation.

Some rules though; never wear black in the heat, wear a hat and perhaps white cotton shirt to cover yourself, don't bake in the sun between 12 and 15 etc

bippityboppity87 · 11/08/2022 16:35

I have a tendency to overheat and become a hot sweaty mess easily, mainly due to the medications I'm on. So I think my baseline is naturally about 2° above everyone else. Also quite pale, so need to be careful. But I do love the sun

I just take necessary precautions; plenty sunscreen, water, fan, lose clothing, sunglasses etc and I'm fine for the most part. Just got back from the beach, but had one of those pop up tents, so spent most of it in there, then dipped in the water if I got too hot. Back home now and totally fine. A bit tired, but not sunburn or anything

If I was walking about in the midday sun or working with no air-con, it would probably be a different story though

LuluBlakey1 · 11/08/2022 16:36

I hate it. My max temp is 18-19 degrees. Anything above that and I hate it. We are on holiday in Donegal. DH and the DC are on the beach and I have moved between being in the sea and sitting in the shade of the large rocks by the big rock pools on the damp sand all day.

sleighbellsjiggling · 11/08/2022 16:36

I used to like it before DC. Now I'm constantly worried about them burning, being outside for too long when it's mega hot, sleeping at night etc.

Pre-DC I'd be in the garden under an umbrella with a book and a drink. Or a beer garden ideally.

Last week was perfect for me, warm but not burny warm.

angieloumc · 11/08/2022 16:38

I don't like the heat at all, neither does my DD, both fair with skin that burns. Roll on autumn and winter. But others love it, different strokes and all that.

dottiedodah · 11/08/2022 16:50

I used to feel the same .However Have acclimitised now and yesterday really enjoyed walking by the river ,having lunch out and the Sun! Quite nice when a little cooler .However really hate rain!

choosername1234 · 11/08/2022 16:51

We live in (quite) central london and the hot weather is miserable there - cumulative heat from buildings and no escape from the heat. This week we're on holiday at the coast in a property with large open gardens and easy access to the beach. Warm days with a gentle breeze, it's bliss

Luxa · 11/08/2022 16:55

I really dislike the heat. It is hard to get anything done in the really hot weather. Like you OP I get headaches in this weather.

Reflectionson · 11/08/2022 15:38

@MeridasMum I suppose I just can’t understand how people enjoy sweating and feeling hugely overheated.

I don't sweat very much, and I don't overheat. Conversely, I find anything between 20-25 degrees a little chilly, 15-20 cold, and anything below 15 I don't want to leave the house.

I'm British, but I don't seem to have been built for this climate.
