To wonder why some people really enjoy this heat?

I’m sweating, I feel anxious, I’ve got a headache and I feel sick. This is what this kind of heat does to me. It’s like torture. There’s no way to cool down properly, unlike in the winter when you can warm up with a blanket and hot water bottle.

I’m actually wondering if it’s a genetic thing. Feels like some people actually enjoy laying in this heat out in the sunshine.

I don't like it either OP!

Unless you have a pool or live by the beach it's too much.

Plus the animals hate it

It kills the plants

BusySittingDown · 11/08/2022 17:33

I'm loving it! I'm always cold.

I get fed up of having to figure out how many layers I need because I'm freezing. I wear my dressing gown year round and I'm loving the fact that it hasn't seen the light of day!

It's ace getting up in the morning and just chucking on some shorts and a vest top. I don't sit or sunbathe in it particularly but it's lovely going for a walk and not mithering about whether I need a jacket or which coat I need.

Justanotherlovesong · 11/08/2022 17:40

Welcome to the misery Olympics op. Don’t dare say you don’t like extreme weather, which yes it is extreme for this country or you’ll have the wrath of the arthritic calling you an ungrateful bastard,

LoobyDop · 11/08/2022 17:44

I don’t like being cold, and I do like being outside as much as possible. It just feels like a better, healthier, more positive way to live. Yes, I can enjoy going out in the cold and then feeling the comfort of snuggling up against it afterwards in winter, but it isn’t better, it’s just making the best of a bad situation you can’t change. I don’t mind to be unkind, but there does seem to be quite a high correlation between people with a pretty negative outlook on life and people who moan about how horrible summer is.

OneTC · 11/08/2022 17:44

I love it.

I spend 11 months of the year cold and kinda miserable and then there's sometimes a month where the weather is alright and then we're back to the grey sideways rain for another year

YesJess · 11/08/2022 17:55

I think you get used to it to a degree, and a lot of people moaning about the heat don't really have a frame of reference.

I've been out in my truck every week day for the past couple of months and air con doesn't work in the truck. Now that's hot. As I'm sitting above the engine the cab quickly rises to 10° higher than outside within a few mins of stopping (its not so bad when driving with windows down).

On the Tuesday where it was 34 here it was 44 in the cab and I was wearing safety trousers and a hi viz over my t shirt. I was having to get out, don a hard hat, and mess around lining mortar tubs in the direct sun for 10-15 mins before getting back into my now scorching truck which had heated up while sitting stationary. Tomorrow will be the same as they haven't managed to get the air con working today as planned. As long as I drink loads of water and ensure I'm back on road with windows down within 20 mins it's been tolerable so far.

Sitting at home in shorts today doesn't feel too bad at all tbh.

YesJess · 11/08/2022 17:58

I don't understand when people say they can't cool down tbh. If you have access to a fridge then you have ice cold water, rathe than the hot water I've been having to drink while on the road.

juliainthedeepwater · 11/08/2022 18:00

Im sure it’s partially genetic yes. I run warm so easily feel overheated and don’t enjoy extreme heat. On the other hand I can swim in very cold water with little trouble and people struggling with that is quite alien to me. But real I know!! I’m naturally a very active person with small children so don’t like weather that forces you to slow down and do very little (tho appreciate in our society this can be quite a good muscle to flex - feel dreadful for people who have to do manual work in this heat though). As these periods of extreme heat become longer and more frequent in the south of England I suspect I’ll quite seriously consider moving to Scotland!

Indeed!
I do t think it's much to do with genetics though as I hate it and my brother loves it.

I think it's more to do with circumstances, stuck indoors in a high rise with kids off school, no garden, work, housework, cooking etc it's not great.

Nice airy flat / house, garden, bbq, nice seating area, paddling pool / pool, no work or kids to see to then much nicer.

Me personally am desperate for Monday when it's normal summer temperatures.

32 here at the moment and I'm got to cook for 4, can't take another sodding salad!

YesJess · 11/08/2022 18:04

I do wonder if our current obesity epidemic is part of the issue. One of my friends is quite a hefty lass and she really struggles with the heat. My slimmer friends seem much more comfortable.

Just having a cold drink doesn't actually cool you! It's refreshing but makes no difference at all if you're overheating. Absolutely ridiculous post.

I don't understand how drinking a cold glass of water is going to make you feel cooler for more than a minute 🤣

Anyone else suspect that a lot of the loons on this thread rabidly defending 35 degree heat as A LOVELY TREAT (except for the WEAK and the FAT… oh and the poor dying animals and plant life tho obvs they don’t care about them) might also tend towards a teeny tiny bit of climate crisis denial?

bruce43mydog · 11/08/2022 18:20

I love this heat, you can wear shorts and t-shirt, enjoy the heat with a cold drink/ice lolly. Everyone just seems so much more relaxed around you. The garden looks beautiful. I can go in and out of the pool to cool down and dry off instantly. I go for a lovely night evening/night time walk knowing i am not going to get rained on or be freezing cold.

TheLostNights · 11/08/2022 18:20

In London. 33C here and clothes are just sticking to me as well as having a headache that won't shift. Kids are irritable and one of them feels sick. But here on mumsnet you will get people saying it isn't that hot, that you should enjoy it and that you are weird for not doing so.
I am just counting down the days till it's over. It's unbearable.

Hawkins001 · 11/08/2022 18:35

After a while when walking around in it, I do get cooking and sweaty. But I prefer this, then torrential rain.

Arnaquer · 11/08/2022 18:41

I love it. I think I'm part lizard

Snog · 11/08/2022 18:45

I feel unwell and definitely grumpy once the temperature is over about 28 degrees. And I am not needing to work in the heat for which I thank my lucky stars.
People must be built differently OP as I know some people are happy with hot weather but I'm like you and I find it hard to fathom!! I just lie on the sofa with a fan on waiting for the temperature to drop again.
Also I'm surprised people can sleep when it's hot at night?

willstarttomorrow · 11/08/2022 18:50

Bloody hell- it is just weather. Certainly global warming is playing a huge part but in the immediate term just adapt. It is very hot yes, but not death valley hot. Wear cool clothes (fabric not tiny shorts and tops), shut curtains and windows and stay in the shade or stay in during the hottest hours if you do not need to be out. Just like they do in hot places. I am working today and it is fine, although hotter than usual. Loads of Europe manage it and they do not all have access to aircon or a pool- they just use common sense.

Sunnyqueen · 11/08/2022 18:50

I have SAD pretty bad. In the summer, especially when it's hot and sunny I have about 10x more energy and motivation every day, I'm much more happier, sociable and talkative and its easy as pie to jump out of bed in the morning ready to crack on, I don't get tired till much later on in the evening. In the winter months I do a complete flip, I have no energy, feel depressed af don't want to see anyone don't want to talk to anyone or go anywhere. Takes me hours of alarms to get out of bed in the morning.

I mean it does definitely have a link with my bipolar too. Whenever Ive gone fully manic it's been during a heatwave and likewise for my agrophopia and depression is in the winter months. This year's the first year where in ages I haven't gone manic and that's only due to finally being on the correct meds, so fingers crossed for the winter.

This is what i say when people moan about the cold - put an extra jumper on and have a hot drink it's really annoying I LOVE COLD 🥶

LynetteScavo · 11/08/2022 19:01

I absolutely love it...there's nothing worse than getting into bed at night and feeling cold. I love crashing out in bed each night with only half a duvet on me, knowing I'll sleep well all night. I love sitting out in the garden all evening. I live just shoving on some flip flops and wandering to the shops rather than faffing with shoes and coats. It would be even better if I had my own swimming pool. I do feel for people who don't have a garden or have to work without air con.

waterlego · 11/08/2022 19:20

I’m one of those who prefers to be too cold than too hot because when it’s sweltering, I find it very difficult to cool down (and stay cool). I can get into the shade/go indoors and stick my feet in some cold water or stick some ice packs about my person but then if I’m still too hot, I don’t have any more avenues. 😂 Whereas if I’m too cold, I just put more and more layers on (love me some thermals) and then some more, and then get under blankets and duvets if necessary. If I’m outside and it’s cold, walking very quickly usually does the trick! I have more energy when it’s cold and I’m motivated to move about more to stay warm. When it’s as hot as it is now, I’m like a sloth mooching about. This coupled with the fact that summer is the only time I drink alcohol means summer is my fat season. I’m a few pounds lighter in winter 😂

BertieBotts · 11/08/2022 19:22

I was thinking this reading the did your parents sunbathe thread - I actually can't imagine lying in direct sun as I can physically feel myself burning and it's really unpleasant. If I am in the sun for more than a few minutes my head starts to feel like it's going to boil off Confused I live in a hotter country than the UK and summers are usually early 30s - late 20s would be a cooler day. I can deal with up to about 28 now. Then I'll be unhappy up to about 31. Anything over 31 feels incredibly unpleasant and I can't help myself but try to get away from it constantly. It doesn't matter if I have nothing to do, even just lying around in that kind of heat feels like I'm next to a heater that is stuck on an uncomfortably high setting.

I don't think it's anxiety about heat because I don't think there's anything to worry about. I don't want to get sunburned, but it's not even that as I've been sunburned accidentally at lower temperatures and not noticed or worried about it until it was too late. It physically feels uncomfortable even if I have sun cream on. Other people don't seem to find it as difficult as I do. When using public transport etc I don't notice them sweating or moving out of seats which are in direct sun etc (when there is space).

The annoying thing is I can't cope with cold either. There's a really narrow window of temperatures between which I am comfortable, basically 15-28. At a real push, 5-31. I haven't come across any climate that actually stays between these!

I don't really understand the health/medication/environment comment? I am in good health, I have been a little underweight but I'm not now and this year feels no different. I don't take any medication except for birth control. I just can't deal with any kind of temperature other than mild. My mum used to joke that I have a faulty thermostat, but I really think it's true! No thyroid issues (had that checked). Slightly low blood pressure, but nothing anyone is worried about. Just always had trouble regulating temperature. I get hot flushes when I come into a warm house on a cold day or when drinking hot drinks. Even as a child I remember classrooms being so hot that I'd have cold shivers come over my body.

PicturesOfDogs · 11/08/2022 19:35

I can cool down fine, but can never heat up. Layers etc do nothing for me.
The only way I can heat up in the winter is by having a long hot bath. It’s like the cold gets into my bones, I always joke about the icy death grin that gets to me.

If I feel too hot I can cool down with relative ease, Open the fridge door or whatever. Funnily enough though, I absolutely detest my face sweating. Anywhere else I can cope with, but my face is a no.
I always think of a lovely warm bath as a treat, but sometimes as soon as I get in one, my face sweats and I have to get out and wait for it to cool or add some cold water.
