Large house- you must have lots of children?

AIBU that people assume that if you have a 3 bed house and a small study- that you must have multiple children?

Currently renovating a derelict house for DH, myself and dog to live in. Yes, its much larger than than the 2 bed flat we lived in, but doesn't have acres of land! We have TTC 12 yrs, 3 losses and rounds of IVF, but people assume we must have lots of kids to have 'such a big' house!

Would you assume someone living in a 3 bed with small study had multiple children?

OP posts:
Cantthinkofadifferentname · 03/08/2022 22:16

Nope, wouldn’t assume that. I used to live in a 3 bed with study space on my own. I would describe big house as 5 bedrooms plus with lots of living space

bloodywhitecat · 03/08/2022 22:16

Not at all, DH and I lived in a 3 bedroomed house because we liked the house not because we filled the bedrooms with multiple children.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 03/08/2022 22:16

I would assume at least one child, space is a premium so you can’t imagine paying for it unless you needed it to a certain extent.
sorry for your losses OP

BaileySharp · 03/08/2022 22:16

The most obvious thing to fill the bedrooms is kids. I guess you could have a guest room and hobby room or something

notacooldad · 03/08/2022 22:18

No
I know loads of people who have houses like that or 4 bedrooms and have no children.
It's not really unusual, well not where I live anyway.
Both my son's have 3 bedroom houses and no children and don't want kids.

alphons · 03/08/2022 22:18

No. Firstly that’s not that big a house. Secondly, I’d assume you both work so one bedroom, two wfh spaces (I know not everyone wfh, but you’re asking and that’s my assumption), then one guest room.

TBH, newish houses are so small that the number of rooms doesn’t mean much to me. I look at square footage.

BrieAndChilli · 03/08/2022 22:19

A 3 bed is a big standard house so I’m not sure who these people are who are saying it’s such a ‘big house’
we have a 4 bed with a study and I would class it as a big house at all (bog standard semi extended to the side)

I’m sorry for your losses @MarmiteCoriander. 💐

If people are being intrusive you can be as rude as you like.

But it depends where you live. In some parts of the country a single person can afford to live in a house like that if they feel like it.

Why live in a flat or a poky house if you don’t have to, no matter what the circumstances?

autumncrisp · 03/08/2022 22:22

My brother has a 5 bedroom house. Just him and his girl friend live there. They have used the bedrooms for different purposes. Their own room, guest room, a office each and a gaming room. They are not planning on having children. I'd never assume anything no matter what the sized property tbh.

Dogscanbefallguysforallmannerofthings · 03/08/2022 22:23

Country being England

TeapotTitties · 03/08/2022 22:26

It's just a 3 bed house so no, I wouldn't think you had 'multiple' children 🤷‍♀️

I wouldn’t really say housing anywhere in the U.K. is cheap- Comparative to local wages anyway.

custardbear · 03/08/2022 22:26

Not really, we've a 5 bed house but 2 kids, no more coming. We use one as a guest room and the other is huge so houses an office as DH WFH, a cinema area )small lol) sofa bed and single bed for guest kids

Shroedy · 03/08/2022 22:29

We had that expectation as well. Now expecting but have had a long journey too, it's not a helpful assumption. The thing that people forget is that the living space is also proportionate to the no of bedrooms - two beds will usually have really small amounts of living space and even just a couple might want a good size kitchen and living room, kids or no kids.

Sartre · 03/08/2022 22:29

I don’t think a 3 bed house is large, it’s average? So no, I wouldn’t assume anything. My Mum lives in a 4 bed detached with 3 bathrooms which baffles me because it’s just her and her partner.
They bought it 3 years ago so not somewhere they’ve lived since kids were at home or anything, all of their kids are adults. They do have GC staying over sometimes but they still really don’t need any more than 2-3 bedrooms max imo. Still, it makes her happy so…

Not necessarily too much.
I live in cheap area, wages are not London like but not everyone is on NMW either.... Many places you can buy 3 bed for under 100k where you still have lots of jobs.

Many 2 bed houses around me have just tiny yard as well so if someone is into gardening... 3 bed it is

Abcdefgh1234 · 03/08/2022 22:35

I dont think 3 bedroom house is large and also i never assume anything about other people house.

I live in 6 bedroom house and only have 2 children 🤣🤣🤣 there are 4 of us. Me and Dh and our kids (6yo and 2yo).

Mally100 · 03/08/2022 22:36

We had a 5 bed house with a separate Annexe as well on our property. It was just dh, ds and I. We had 2 spare guest rooms and turned one into an office. DS slept in with us most of the time anyway, so it was 4 rooms hardly used. No one had ever assumed that about us.

Wouldloveanother · 03/08/2022 22:38

I don’t think it’s unreasonable for people to assume that others buy houses of a size that fits the number of people that plan to live in it. I would be equally as surprised if a family with 4 kids bought a 2 bedroom flat.

i dont think a 3 bedroom house counts as disproportionately big for a couple though, it’s pretty average - room for a study and a guest room, or whatever plans you have for it.

I have to be honest though and say situations like @Sartre mum pisses me off though. So many families struggling for housing and 2 people think they need a 4 bed plus 3 bathrooms! Before anyone says anything, no I wouldn’t legislate against it, but it seems very selfish to me.

HonestlyKen · 03/08/2022 22:38

DH and I both work from home, and we live in a nice part of the countryside that family like to visit, so we bought a 4-bed house, even though our three young adult DC had effectively moved out.

Then lockdown came and they all moved back and now they are showing zero signs of wanting to leave. We had to build an office outside, ffs. Sometimes I feel like moving into it permanently.

CowPalace · 03/08/2022 22:44

Nope. I have one child and a house with five bedrooms, two of which DH and I use as studies.

TrickyD · 03/08/2022 22:45

Five bedrooms, three bathrooms, two cloakrooms; two sitting rooms, dining room, study, big liveable-in conservatory; kitchen, utility, pantry, boiler/drying room. Perfect for two old people and our cat.

Scianel · 03/08/2022 22:50

Wouldloveanother selfish why? It's just DH and I and we have a four bed, three bath house, we bought it, we didn't steal it from anyone.
