Lack of coverage- first ever ethnic minority PM

Cannot believe the lack of media interest in this. The next PM of the UK will either be a woman or a man of South Asian ethnicity. This is a massive thing yet the only coverage I’ve seen relates to potential tax policies of the next PM. It will be a historic first, I am excited to be alive and experience this moment in history. AIBU to be amazed at the bland media coverage!?

I think that the fact it isn’t a thing makes it better. They are just seen as individuals and people are talking about their policies and their race/sex is of little importance. As it should be.

PestorPeston · 24/07/2022 21:52

Have you heard of Margret Thatcher and Theresa May?

Sunak might have a harder time getting past the rather old party members, then again he might not.

Tippexy · 24/07/2022 21:54

The Conservatives having a female prime minister isn’t really newsworthy in the way that it would be for Labour though.

marcopront · 24/07/2022 21:56

So you think it should be about race or sex not about policies?

Margaret Thatcher was the Prime minister from when I was seven until I was an adult.

ThinWomansBrain · 24/07/2022 22:03

Depends on where you get your news I guess.
Some print media is very biased, but most of what i've seen/heard has been fairly equally balanced (time wise at least, there do seem to be more people queueing up to say Truss is a bit dim overly-focussed on cheese).
We had our first female PM 40+ years ago - why is the possibility of a female PM newsworthy?
Personally I think it's a sign of a more advanced society if the coverage is not focussed on the colour of a candidate's skin, or the country his parents were born.

BPTape · 24/07/2022 22:04

Their race and sex has nothing to do with their ability to be prime minister. Their policies have everything to do with it. It’s refreshing to hear them being discussed.

tripletrouble · 24/07/2022 22:04

You are being unreasonable to see a candidate in terms of race or sex. Identity politics is not the way to go!

yes, Hello Liz.

BobinogBobbleHat · 24/07/2022 22:05

Also Disraeli.

AnneLovesGilbert · 24/07/2022 22:06

You’re so very wrong. Progress is when the media doesn’t bang on about stuff like this. Not many people get to choose the next PM, let’s make it about the nitty gritty of policy and have them vote on that.

Lilgamesh2 · 24/07/2022 22:10

the right wing media publications don't care as they don't do identity politics.

The left wing media won't celebrate it as it undermines their message of 'all Tories are sexist / racist / bigoted' etc

QuillBill · 24/07/2022 22:10

This is a massive thing yet the only coverage I’ve seen relates to potential tax policies of the next PM

Yea, who cares about the cost of living crisis of their silly policies. It's what's in their pants that I want to know about. BiscuitBiscuit

lljkk · 24/07/2022 22:12

I've heard loads of comments about the diversity of the potential field, actual field, remaining candidates, etc. From BBC, ITV, MN, other places on twitter. Not sure what media you follow, OP. Following some commentary in last 18m on the huge diversity of Johnson's cabinet.

Totally agree that tory party voters don't care about their diversity. Which is a good thing.

FictionalCharacter · 24/07/2022 22:12

I’m really happy that no big deal is being made of this. I’d hate it if we were like the USA, all “OMG a Prime Minister of colour!” from both sides - the people celebrating it and the racists.

declutteringmymind · 24/07/2022 22:14

As an Indian woman, I think that they're both shit. I just want someone competent. I don't care if it's a black woman or a white man.

ChiselandBits · 24/07/2022 22:15

As pp said...it's great that it hasn't been mentioned. It's irrelevant. Their policies and record this far are what this should be based on. Also, this particular election is not the whole country, just a few thousand party members. Might be a more significant factor with regard to UK attitudes generally in 2024.

PinkDaffodil2 · 24/07/2022 22:15

Two of the last five conservative PMs have been women so I don’t think another is hugely newsworthy? There was a lot in the news about the diversity of the leadership candidates. I’m sure if Sunak wins there will be chat about his ethnicity but that’s looking pretty unlikely as he’s so unpopular amongst the membership.

Mammami · 24/07/2022 22:16

Strange that the British public aren't enthused and wetting themselves at the prospect of a new Tory PM. They are all cut from the same cloth, after all.

But you must also live under a rock as there has been constant media coverage of the leadership contest, though bit quieter now for the summer parliament break.

Driftingonawave · 24/07/2022 22:17

Agree, it’s a good thing it’s not a focal point - why should it be?

skippy67 · 24/07/2022 22:18

The next PM will be someone who most of us haven't voted for. That's the big story here.

PlanetNormal · 24/07/2022 22:20

Sunak is a Winchester, Oxford & Stanford educated former Goldman Sachs banker & Hedge Fund director who is a multi-millionaire & married to the non-dom daughter of a foreign billionaire. And he’s a Tory.

Beside that little lot, his ethnicity is irrelevant.

CrystalCoco · 24/07/2022 22:21

It's old news if we get a female PM (been there done that, twice!) and tbh you sound a bit racist and sexist

I have to agree with PP upthread ref being a bit dim thinking the gender or race of the PM is more important than their actual politics / policies??

It's not Love Island, it's the Prime Minister.

DdraigGoch · 24/07/2022 22:21

Pretty sure that the taxation policy of a potential PM is far more important than the colour of their skin or the contents of their underwear.
