Lack of coverage- first ever ethnic minority PM

WomanHere · 24/07/2022 21:47

Cannot believe the lack of media interest in this. The next PM of the UK will either be a woman or a man of South Asian ethnicity. This is a massive thing yet the only coverage I’ve seen relates to potential tax policies of the next PM. It will be a historic first, I am excited to be alive and experience this moment in history. AIBU to be amazed at the bland media coverage!?

the right wing media publications don't care as they don't do identity politics.

The left wing media won't celebrate it as it undermines their message of 'all Tories are sexist / racist / bigoted' etc

The right wing don’t do identity politics? How do you think Joh sin got where he did?
Also being a woman or an ethnic minority doesn’t stop you being bigoted.

SkirridHill · 24/07/2022 22:28

Huzzah, another Tory PM! What a time to be alive.Hmm

Rummikub · 24/07/2022 22:29

I think it would be history making having a pm from an ethnic background. Part of me wonders if there’s anti Sunak feeling due to his ethnicity from the conservative party.
Pp are right tho the policies are more important. I was v interested in Kemi being pm till I read her policies.

Also Disraeli.

This.

DistrictCommissioner · 24/07/2022 22:35

wasn’t Lord Liverpool of Indian descent?

MarshaMelrose · 24/07/2022 22:36

The next PM will be someone who most of us haven't voted for. That's the big story here.

No, the big story would be if a PM was someone who most people had voted for. Never happened yet in modern times.

mynameiscalypso · 24/07/2022 22:37

We're going to have another PM who read PPE at Oxford. So diverse...

tootiredtoocare · 24/07/2022 22:37

I'm most concerned that for the 3rd time in 6 years, 200,000 people are getting to elect this country's PM. It's getting a bit fckng ridiculous.

SaySomethingMan · 24/07/2022 22:38

OP, do you know something the rest of don’t know?

if Wishy Washy Rishi wins, then there should absolutely be an acknowledgement of him
being the first non-white PM. Of course it’s a big deal and deserves a “fuss”.

However, he isn’t ( yet) so there’s nothing to see here, for now.

DistrictCommissioner · 24/07/2022 22:39

wasn’t Lord Liverpool of Indian descent?

I looked it up - he was one eighth Indian.

Princessoftheuniverse · 24/07/2022 22:43

Can’t get excited about either of them to be honest. No charisma and both tarred by the Boris connection. So disappointing. Mind you even from the beginning none of them had any appeal. Whoever gets the job it’s not going to be something to celebrate.

Justanotherlurker · 24/07/2022 22:44

Also being a woman or an ethnic minority doesn’t stop you being bigoted.

Thats true, just look at some of Diane Abbott's past comments.

WillitFit · 24/07/2022 22:45

It's a bit premature. Female isn't really news anymore and ethnic minority hasn't happened yet.

I'm sure there will be lots said if it happens, but for the campaign surely people would rather hear about polices.

WillitFit · 24/07/2022 22:48

I think you've read the wrong meme headline. Both current candidates read PPE, the current PM didn't.

There have only been two who did.

mumda · 24/07/2022 22:52

Just for fun ... Have labour ever got close to having a female leader?

woolwinder · 24/07/2022 22:55

The next PM might be a BAME person or a woman, but for me that kind of pales away to nothing compared to the fact that they are 1. Tories 2. Were happy to kiss Boris Johnson's backside while it suited them. Roll on a Labour government.

godmum56 · 24/07/2022 22:57

Bodice · 24/07/2022 21:50

I think that the fact it isn’t a thing makes it better. They are just seen as individuals and people are talking about their policies and their race/sex is of little importance. As it should be.

this absolutely

I didn’t know that. Thanks.

doesn't everybody have an ethnic background?

OhGoodnessItsSoExhausting · 24/07/2022 22:59

Well there certainly have been female PMs before! In fact, the first 17 years of my life was a conservative government led by Margaret Thatcher. I couldn't care less what sex the next PM is.

As for Rishi - this millionaire, public boys school educated, middle aged male is typically conservative. Typically out of touch, and married to a billionaire. Not sure he represents the kind of diversity I'd like to see in government really, or that he represents 'the people'.00

Rummikub · 24/07/2022 23:00

But I dont think we are there yet.

BLM did make a big difference. But a long way to go. So it is a big thing even being in the running imo.

Rummikub · 24/07/2022 23:01

godmum56 · 24/07/2022 22:58

doesn't everybody have an ethnic background?

Sorry minority ethnic backgrounds

FuckeryOmbudsman · 24/07/2022 23:01

PestorPeston · 24/07/2022 21:52

Have you heard of Margret Thatcher and Theresa May?

Sunak might have a harder time getting past the rather old party members, then again he might not.

Or Benjamin Disraeli

(OK, being Jewish isn't a counted as ethnicity, but it definitely not a WASP)

And it's one of those curious things, that in terms of diversity of their leaders, the Tories are way ahead of Labour (and the others, though other partoies have chosen a woman)

Justanotherlurker · 24/07/2022 23:02

We're going to have another PM who read PPE at Oxford. So diverse...

Actually more labour MP's have studied PPE at Oxford than conservatives, as anothe PP mentioned, you need to expand your twitter follows as that meme isn't as 'educated' as you think it is.

gogohmm · 24/07/2022 23:03

Why does it matter? Couldn't care less about skin colour or sex, it's their competency that counts and I can't stand either!
