Lack of coverage- first ever ethnic minority PM

Cannot believe the lack of media interest in this. The next PM of the UK will either be a woman or a man of South Asian ethnicity. This is a massive thing yet the only coverage I’ve seen relates to potential tax policies of the next PM. It will be a historic first, I am excited to be alive and experience this moment in history. AIBU to be amazed at the bland media coverage!?

OP posts:

What media are you reading? It has been discussed at length most places.
It's also a bit of a non issue given the horrific state the country is currently in.

ThinWomansBrain · 24/07/2022 23:06

Disreli was born in Bloomsbury of jewish/italian descent.
The first Asian MP (not PM) was Naoroji in the 1890's; boundaries have changed, but he was an MP for the area I live in now, there's a street named after him.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 24/07/2022 23:07

Not sure OP will be back.

ThinWomansBrain · 24/07/2022 23:12

Probably not, she's gone to count cheese.

As an Indian woman, I think that they're both shit. I just want someone competent. I don't care if it's a black woman or a white man.

Yup the problem is that they're both shit

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 24/07/2022 23:27

Rather ironic considering how theyre treating minorities seeking safety here isnt it?

I don't see either as a positive for the UK when neither will be a positive asset based on their ability to do the job well.

Just for fun ... Have labour ever got close to having a female leader?

Well there were originally four female candidates and one male candidate in the last Labour leadership election, so they got that far!

APJ1 · 24/07/2022 23:37

I think there would be more talk of this were not so overwhelmingly likely that Liz Truss will win the vote.

Manekinek0 · 24/07/2022 23:38

Who cares about their gender or ethnicity? They are both horrid people. I would rather have some posh, white, male Etonian with a shred of intelligence, integrity and compassion than either of them.

I agree. They were very enlightened and allowed women to speak in the hustings. Then elected a middle aged, white, male Knight of the Bath. Hurrah for diversity in the Labour Party.

sst1234 · 24/07/2022 23:59

First, which media are you following OP. There is wall to wall coverage of this, everyday. Second, as others said, we’ve had two female PMs already. And finally, we’re not going to have an ethnic minority PM, not this time anyway. Truss will win this one.
And anyway, it doesn’t matter what the ethnicity of the PM is if they’re as incompetent with the economy as ol’ boy Rishi.

Nope. Nor anyone from a minority ethnic background.

Lefties see BAME people as ‘marginalised’ groups to be patronised, not as equals capable of leadership.

SophieHasOneQuestion · 25/07/2022 00:49

It should be about merit and merit only.

easyday · 25/07/2022 00:59

It's progress that this ISN'T part of the story.

This is how I feel about the left.

OP how's your history? Do you know we had black men elected as mayors in 1904 and 1906? Shouldn't be an issue if we have a man of South Asian ancestry as PM in 2022.

Kerrrmieee · 25/07/2022 01:05

He lost me at multi millionaire.

1 of his mugs is worth my weekly food shop.

Kerrrmieee · 25/07/2022 01:07

I don't care what colour his skin is.

It's not history in the making, it's just another rich toff thinking they know what the general public need.

Kerrrmieee · 25/07/2022 01:07

We have a Muslim mayor of London - not crowing about that are you?

VivienneDelacroix · 25/07/2022 01:08

Sunak won't get it and we've had 2 women prime ministers already.

BloodAndFire · 25/07/2022 01:09

BobinogBobbleHat · 24/07/2022 22:05

Also Disraeli.

Thank you... I was wondering how far I'd have to read before his name was mentioned 👍

Mississipi71 · 25/07/2022 01:14

Funny how we are meant to be promoting E&D, whilst highlighting differences at the same time. We are all equal, or we are not. Why then, OP, do you think divisions need to be widened even more?

Snoopsnoggysnog · 25/07/2022 01:58

Because the OP is either just trying to be goady or is a lazy journo, if the latter, bugger off please.

Bodice · 24/07/2022 21:50

I think that the fact it isn’t a thing makes it better. They are just seen as individuals and people are talking about their policies and their race/sex is of little importance. As it should be.

Agree

JudithandHolofernesHead · 25/07/2022 04:00

When the media scream, the first brown person/gay person/woman/disabled/oldest/youngest to do something! and the population says, yeah? And? means we are heading in the right direction as a society.

Jake Daniels came out as gay (footballer) and although people wished him well I got the sense nobody really made a big deal out of it.

The first thing I think of looking and hearing Rishi Sunak is "posh". His ethnicity is way down the list of my impressions of him. Liz Truss will be the third female PM in the UK if she wins. So what? Both candidates are a bit shit, but their protected characteristics have nothing to do with being so.

SpaceGoatFarm · 25/07/2022 04:02

Good old intersectional imperialism. While we are at it we should be demanding more women get the top war criminal jobs.
