Lack of coverage- first ever ethnic minority PM

WomanHere · 24/07/2022 21:47

Cannot believe the lack of media interest in this. The next PM of the UK will either be a woman or a man of South Asian ethnicity. This is a massive thing yet the only coverage I’ve seen relates to potential tax policies of the next PM. It will be a historic first, I am excited to be alive and experience this moment in history. AIBU to be amazed at the bland media coverage!?

Are you a reporter then stirring up trouble?
people are viewed as people not on their sex or colour.

Bodice · 24/07/2022 21:50

I think that the fact it isn’t a thing makes it better. They are just seen as individuals and people are talking about their policies and their race/sex is of little importance. As it should be.

As if!

Negative thinking and reminding me of Morgan Freeman's (positive) words.

HolidayCountdownIsOn · 25/07/2022 18:36

I have no interest in their race or sex, it's irrelevant. I want to hear about their policies and how they plan to lead the country.

VladmirsPoutine · 25/07/2022 18:42

For Sunak it's rather intentional. Ethnic minority tories have to divorce their race from their identity to progress only wielding it when politically expedient whereas Labour MPs can't do that or aren't afforded the same grace. You wouldn't have cheered for more female camp guards - this is much the same.

VladmirsPoutine · 25/07/2022 18:46

I'm very interested in their race and going by this thread and the people who say things like 'it doesn't matter if they're purple with green spots all I care about are their policies' illustrates just how successful the tories have been at basically all but erasing the intersectionality of our identities i.e. if racism doesn't exist on an institutional level then there's no need to reform the police because they're not racist - meanwhile black men will continue to be arrested for looking suspicious in a hoody. Priti Patel in the home office is like winning the world cup for the tories because you can't decry the policy racist if the person enacting it is a minority. I've often said that by now I'd be a home owner in central London with at least 1 G-wagon if I could tap dance for the tories.

Labour ethnic minority front benchers thrive on their promotion of division. They keep their seats for that reason alone. Well done for highlighting that.

Didn't think you would have an answer to that. Trolls cripple under pressure 😀

The next PM will be someone who most of us haven't voted for. That's the big story here.

Quite. They will be chosen by approx 200,000 people, the vast majority of whom are white, male and over retirement age.

I think there should be a rule that when the party of government elects a new leader, they should call a general election and it should take place within 6 months of their election.

That way, we all get to have a say.

VladmirsPoutine · 25/07/2022 19:09

There's no pressure. It's something I've written extensively on and know quite a bit about. But sure whatever you say. Smile

Disraeli?

We also, many years ago, had the first PM whose first language wasn't English. (Not Disraeli.)

Was it Lloyd George? Iirc, Welsh was his first language.

I think what they are saying is that Tories are not racist if the person they might be racist about holds the same hate filled views as them.

I write extensively on gibberish, would you like me to share some @VladmirsPoutine ?

Shortjanet · 25/07/2022 19:20

The whole thing has had way too much coverage imo. Don't think race should be another thing to start everyone talking about. I find it bizarre that there is so much talk and media focus when ultimately the choice of the next PM is in the hands of less than 0.5% of the electorate. Again. Third time since 2016 it's all down to the Tory party members. They've got such a good track record too.

Mammami · 25/07/2022 19:29

@VladmirsPoutine You have a nice, roundabout way there of calling Priti Patel a racist or perhaps you would say ''race traitor'' because she doesn't conform to your idealistic version of ''ethnic minority behaviour'' - as if that is even such a thing. This is a thread about Rishi Sunak, so why do you have to bring other ''ethnic minority'' politicians in in such tokenistic fashion?

SnackSizeRaisin · 25/07/2022 19:31

Rishi sunak doesn't really count as an ethnic minority in my opinion. He's part of a tiny elite that have nothing in common with most people, Asian or white or other.
Class diversity is the priority for me

It's not a thread about rishi sunak. It's a thread about the first ethnic minority (potential) pm. Hence it is not racist to discuss other ethnic minority leaders within that context.
Priti Patel is definitely racist. Look at the windrush scandal. In fact it is very common for ethnic minorities to be racist about other races. Because racism is a human feature and we are all human!
