Lack of coverage- first ever ethnic minority PM

WomanHere · 24/07/2022 21:47

Cannot believe the lack of media interest in this. The next PM of the UK will either be a woman or a man of South Asian ethnicity. This is a massive thing yet the only coverage I’ve seen relates to potential tax policies of the next PM. It will be a historic first, I am excited to be alive and experience this moment in history. AIBU to be amazed at the bland media coverage!?

It's not a thread about rishi sunak. It's a thread about the first ethnic minority (potential) pm. Hence it is not racist to discuss other ethnic minority leaders within that context.
Priti Patel is definitely racist. Look at the windrush scandal. In fact it is very common for ethnic minorities to be racist about other races. Because racism is a human feature and we are all human!

Priti Patel racist? Hilarious notion.

Rishi sunak doesn't really count as an ethnic minority in my opinion. He's part of a tiny elite that have nothing in common with most people, Asian or white or other.
Class diversity is the priority for me

Hmmm pretty sure you can still be an ethnic minority and hold rw conservative views/be an elitist/be a horrible person. Even be a racist.

Just for fun ... Have labour ever got close to having a female leader?

They've had two: Margaret Beckett and Harriet Harman.

It was the LibDems who'd never had a female leader until very recently when they elected Jo Swinson - and must have wished they hadn't. She lasted 4 months.

Kaibashira · 25/07/2022 20:28

Well done Rishi Sunak for proving it only takes a generation to turn into a raging rentier capitalist ready to pull up the ladder behind you.

I think if the government wasn't so utterly uselsss and these two weren't so utterly mediocre - dangerously so - there might be more talk about it.

There's just no way in hell Sunak should be the first minority ethnic PM. He's under qualified, incapable of policy innovation, and ultimately has to drift even further to the right to win votes anyway - which in practical terms means ignoring the most serious issues facing the country. I'm glad the media is concentrating on how terrible his record is, rather than his ethnicity.

Obviously I think Truss is shite as well.

Incorrect. Labour has never been led by a woman. Deputies do not count.

Wonder if a political thread can ever go without the R word being thrown about?

So being in an ethnic minority group has nothing to do with a person's ethnicity? They have to fall into certain non race based categories as well? Interesting. Who has defined those. You? What are they?

Rinatinabina · 25/07/2022 21:39

VladmirsPoutine · 25/07/2022 18:42

For Sunak it's rather intentional. Ethnic minority tories have to divorce their race from their identity to progress only wielding it when politically expedient whereas Labour MPs can't do that or aren't afforded the same grace. You wouldn't have cheered for more female camp guards - this is much the same.

Genuine question, how has he divorced his race from his identity?

At what income level do I start to become less asian…… just curious

As it should.

Personally it's a case Of this twat or that twat. Either way you get a twat.

Acting leader is a leader. Clue is in the name

lljkk · 25/07/2022 22:01

Rinatinabina, presumably you need a parent, husband, sister & her kid, + 2 kids of your own all crammed in an extended 3 bed semi (or end terrace) to be proper Asian. Helps if you have a visiting cousin having an extended stay, too.

On that basis, Erin Quinn & family in Derry Girls are the most Asian people ever.

hatedbythedailymail22 · 25/07/2022 22:04

Even if Rishi got the job, which he won't, he'd only be the SECOND ethnic minority leader of a Western European country.

Ireland got a half Indian openly gay 38 year old leader years ago.

UK & France are the least 'white' nations of Europe. UK is still 84-85% white.

We are talking leader as in the leader of the party. Clue is in the title.

Yes, acting leader IS the leader. That is the point. Interim leader, also the leader. Temporary leader...is the leader.

The person leading the party at any given time is the leader. As you say, the clue is in the title xxxLEADER.

Yes I'd also like to know if the PP actually meant this or it was some kind of poorly drawn analogy because if they meant it seriously it is pretty offensive. And I'm not a tory...

Are you still splitting hairs? Try reading Harriet Harman on why Labour have NEVER had a leader.

ChiTorpedo · 26/07/2022 11:47

Nothing I hate more than when the spotlight is put on race/sex. Reminds me of how in the corporate world when a woman or an ethnic minority gets a promotion (it's even worse when it's a woman of ethnic minority), you'll hear non-stop comments about how s/he's a 'diversity hire' while men who get promoted are commonly seen as competent and charismatic individuals who got there by their own merits.

vermicello · 26/07/2022 11:50

Sunak is awful and has wasted so much money during the pandemic which will cost taxpayers billions. He has no regards for the working class and is basically just trying to be another Blair and Blair was bad enough. He has the charisma of a goldfish and his financial policies are dangerous to anyone but the rich.

No, I'm not splitting hairs. Just using language properly.

There is a difference between a full leader and an acting one, but both have led the party and it is not accurate to state that Labour have never had a female leader.
