Lack of coverage- first ever ethnic minority PM

WomanHere · 24/07/2022 21:47

Cannot believe the lack of media interest in this. The next PM of the UK will either be a woman or a man of South Asian ethnicity. This is a massive thing yet the only coverage I’ve seen relates to potential tax policies of the next PM. It will be a historic first, I am excited to be alive and experience this moment in history. AIBU to be amazed at the bland media coverage!?

No, I'm not splitting hairs. Just using language properly.

There is a difference between a full leader and an acting one, but both have led the party and it is not accurate to state that Labour have never had a female leader.

Then you had better tell Harriet Harman that.

Snaketime · 26/07/2022 11:52

Bodice · 24/07/2022 21:50

I think that the fact it isn’t a thing makes it better. They are just seen as individuals and people are talking about their policies and their race/sex is of little importance. As it should be.

Bodice has posted exactly what I was thinking, but worded it better than I ever would have.

Not my problem if Harriet and yourself need a dictionary.

Mississipi71 · 26/07/2022 11:56

As the (goady) OP seems to thrive on division, maybe they would like to scrutinise Labour's unwillingness to promote women. How dare women be trusted to make substantive decisions. Then again, it is only the Tories that are fair game on MN. Quite ironic given that the forum is so feminist led.

Why? I
Mentioned the word darkie, ironically, about myself!!! Sheesh! This forum is deranged!

Not my problem if you cannot distinguish between substantive and unsubstantive. In fact, all you are doing is scoring an own goal.

As you were.

Honey, Labour can't even answer the question What is a woman, and keep insisting that men can be women. For all we know, according the Labour, Neil Kinnock may have actually been a woman.

Now that's substantive.

Who cares about their gender or ethnicity? They are both horrid people. I would rather have some posh, white, male Etonian with a shred of intelligence, integrity and compassion than either of them.

Exactly!

They are both vile and I don't think anyone who is a millionaire and married to a billionaire should be PM. The Tories and a lot of MPs are out of touch but that is on a new scale

pointythings · 26/07/2022 12:39

YABU because they are both shitty Tories and nothing will change with either of them in charge.

This can't be the only feminist issue though - and I say that as someone who is GC. Successive Tory governments have brought in policies that disproportionately affect women - women who were moved to UC and cannot afford to feed themselves or their children.

It shouldn't ALL be about trans people vs women

Fair point.

@hatedbythedailymail22 I am sure we have all seen this repeated many times. Would you be good enough to tell us what a women is?

Sure, if you're as confused as they are. A woman is an adult human female.

@hatedbythedailymail22 and what do you mean by female?

VladmirsPoutine · 26/07/2022 19:10

This really one of the worst threads I've ever seen on this site and I've been here ages and seen A LOT of threads. Definitely in the top 3 worst threads.

Your contribution @VladmirsPoutine has elevated it for me into the top 5.

I mean of or denoting the sex that can bear offspring or produce eggs, distinguished biologically by the production of gametes (ova) which can be fertilized by male gametes.

blacksax · 26/07/2022 21:02

DdraigGoch · 24/07/2022 22:21

Pretty sure that the taxation policy of a potential PM is far more important than the colour of their skin or the contents of their underwear.

Well said.

SpaceGoatFarm · 27/07/2022 21:58

Labour has more women and ethnic minorities than all the other parties combined.

I really dont know what's wrong Mississippi but you come across as a complete nasty piece of work. What's that all about?

SpaceGoatFarm · 27/07/2022 22:06

How do people on Mumsnet just shut out the fact from their mind that the whole of the right wing, conservative establishment considers feminism to be the pinnacle of 'woke identity politics'?

And how do 'feminists' vote for a party which contains Phillip Davies and Christopher Chope? Because they hate trans people along with every other minority going?

I've yet to have any tory 'feminist' even engage when I ask the question about Phillip Davies. They pretend thats also just a thing that doesnt exist as long as they dont acknowledge it or just mention Dianne Abbott.

user1745 · 27/07/2022 22:06

I don't really see it as a massive thing. He has a very privileged background which to me makes his ethnicity somehow just an incidental fact? I'm not saying it's wrong if anyone else finds it significant, but I don't think it's anything we need to actually celebrate or point out.

I'd find it more significant if there were a candidate from a working class deprived background, regardless of their ethnicity.

Most of all I just want a competent prime minister who has integrity, whatever their ethnicity or background.

Echobelly · 27/07/2022 22:10

I agree that it's a good thing it isn't a big deal. It's like when, a few years ago, I found out our local MP was gay when he gave a speech mentioning his husband and I thought TBH it was a really good thing that I didn't know his sexuality as it just wasn't and shouldn't be a big issue.

In some ways it is a good sign of the time that the final candidates are a woman and a person of colour, although my feeling is that as Tories, they got there by agreeing with the status quo and toeing the line that sexism and racism are not that serious in this country; neither will do anything for women or minority ethnic groups because that would damage their standing in the party.

debbrianna · 27/07/2022 22:22

SnackSizeRaisin · 25/07/2022 19:31

Rishi sunak doesn't really count as an ethnic minority in my opinion. He's part of a tiny elite that have nothing in common with most people, Asian or white or other.
Class diversity is the priority for me

This is one quote I will remember for a long time. It really defines whiteness and I don't think the poster realises.
