Lack of coverage- first ever ethnic minority PM

WomanHere · 24/07/2022 21:47

Cannot believe the lack of media interest in this. The next PM of the UK will either be a woman or a man of South Asian ethnicity. This is a massive thing yet the only coverage I’ve seen relates to potential tax policies of the next PM. It will be a historic first, I am excited to be alive and experience this moment in history. AIBU to be amazed at the bland media coverage!?

The right wing media 'doesnt do identity politics?'hahahaha. Maybe explain why every second word in those shitrags is 'woke'? And why we have journalists on here wittering on about how great it is our next incompetent leader will be a woman or ethnic minority?

FavouritePi · 25/07/2022 04:36

Because it changes absolutely nothing, whoever wins will just continue fucking us all over anyway. It really doesn't matter if it's a woman or an Asian man. They'll still be a Tory.

bakewellbride · 25/07/2022 05:33

@FavouritePi my thoughts exactly.

BobinogBobbleHat · 24/07/2022 22:05

Also Disraeli.

who doesn't receive enough credit for bringing back the beard.

SaySomethingMan · 25/07/2022 07:30

EmmaH2022 · 25/07/2022 01:03

This is how I feel about the left.

OP how's your history? Do you know we had black men elected as mayors in 1904 and 1906? Shouldn't be an issue if we have a man of South Asian ancestry as PM in 2022.

What have those 100 years been like since then?

As an aside, the journey of Asians and Black people is so different that I think the BAME reference is problematic ( apparently some stats include Eastern Europeans too).

I think that the fact it isn’t a thing makes it better. They are just seen as individuals and people are talking about their policies and their race/sex is of little importance. As it should be.

Yup agree

SleeplessInEngland · 25/07/2022 07:41

A) I’ve read countless stuff about the contender diversity.
B) Sunak isn’t going to win.

skippy67 · 24/07/2022 22:18

The next PM will be someone who most of us haven't voted for. That's the big story here.

Unless the prime minister is your MP most of us didn’t vote for them either. That’s not how politics works in this country.

I'm more concerned that the next Prime Minister is someone who accepted their boss lying in public for years and didn't say anything and supports the deportation of some of the countries most vulnerable people to Rwanda.

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 25/07/2022 07:52

Makes no difference to me they are both awful prospects in my opinion.

loislovesstewie · 25/07/2022 07:57

I can remember when The Guardian, of all newspapers(!) suggested that women should vote Conservative as their leader was a woman! I don't give two hoots who the leader is in terms of sex/gender/race ,etc. I'm interested in the policies and quite frankly that is the way it should be.

jgw1 · 25/07/2022 08:01

DdraigGoch · 24/07/2022 22:21

Pretty sure that the taxation policy of a potential PM is far more important than the colour of their skin or the contents of their underwear.

The most important thing for me, and it is completely non-negotiable is do they know what a woman is. Boris did having slept with so many, I'm not sure that Vote for Truss or get Rishi richer do.

LittleBearPad · 25/07/2022 08:05

FuckeryOmbudsman · 24/07/2022 23:01

Or Benjamin Disraeli

(OK, being Jewish isn't a counted as ethnicity, but it definitely not a WASP)

And it's one of those curious things, that in terms of diversity of their leaders, the Tories are way ahead of Labour (and the others, though other partoies have chosen a woman)

Why is Judaism not an ethnicity? 6 million people died in the holocaust because they were ethnically Jewish

Lindy2 · 25/07/2022 08:07

I'd rather focus on their policies and ethics. That's what both should be judged on not sex or ethnicity.

I'm glad that's the main focus as it's actually all that matters.

All these labels and firsts etc seems the opposite of inclusive.

skippy67 · 25/07/2022 08:07

PlanetNormal · 25/07/2022 00:44

Nope. Nor anyone from a minority ethnic background.

Lefties see BAME people as ‘marginalised’ groups to be patronised, not as equals capable of leadership.

Why are you still using the term BAME?

FavouritePi · 25/07/2022 04:36

I am Asian and absolutely agree with this. I would rather have an old white man with better politics than Rishi.

JassyRadlett · 25/07/2022 08:10

OK, being Jewish isn't a counted as ethnicity, but it definitely not a WASP

It's fairly controversial to suggest that Jewish isn't an ethnicity - there are certainly disagreements within the Jewish community about it, but antisemitism is largely built on ethnic identity rather than religious practice.

MarshaBradyo · 25/07/2022 08:11

It is good it’s so diverse

The media have picked up on that rather than firsts which is fine

Sunak may not win but it’s more his alignment to party members or not with policies than anything else, plus wealth might be an issue

@MarshaBradyo Do you think Sunak not wanting to live and pay taxes in the UK might be a bit of an issue?
Do you think that Sunak being a law breaker might be a bit of an issue?

balalake · 25/07/2022 08:14

I don't want Rishi Sunak to win because he is of Asian heritage, I want him to win because he is the lesser incompetent of the two candidates.

IncompleteSenten · 25/07/2022 08:15

I think it is entirely appropriate that the focus should be on the politics not the ethnicity or sex.

That does not mean it's not a good thing. Politics is heavily dominated by white men and that needs to change.

But we should care more about the policies than the colour or sex.

lickenchugget · 25/07/2022 08:18

It’s progress that this is NOT newsworthy.

Lilgamesh2 · 25/07/2022 08:21

@skippy67 are we not allowed to use BAME anymore? I see it all the time.

LittleBearPad · 25/07/2022 08:21

But then none if that is true so not really an issue, no

Rewis · 25/07/2022 08:25

I thought it was a positive and a step to the right direction that the media is concentrated on policies inside of gender and ethnicity.
