Lack of coverage- first ever ethnic minority PM

WomanHere · 24/07/2022 21:47

Cannot believe the lack of media interest in this. The next PM of the UK will either be a woman or a man of South Asian ethnicity. This is a massive thing yet the only coverage I’ve seen relates to potential tax policies of the next PM. It will be a historic first, I am excited to be alive and experience this moment in history. AIBU to be amazed at the bland media coverage!?

As a party member I don’t give a shit about the sex or ethnicity of the candidates - what I’m wrestling with is which one will do a better job and that’s not really easy to decide.

LittleBearPad · 25/07/2022 08:21

But then none if that is true so not really an issue, no

You do know the conditions that attach to having a Green Card for the USA, as he did until recently, don't you?

jgw1 · 25/07/2022 08:13

@MarshaBradyo Do you think Sunak not wanting to live and pay taxes in the UK might be a bit of an issue?
Do you think that Sunak being a law breaker might be a bit of an issue?

Wrong. Go and read about taxation rules regarding Domicile.

I worked at HMRC for over 30 years. You haven't a clue.

So what is the criteria for being non dom? I thought there was a requirement to be temporarily resident. So if his wife is/was temporarily resident no laws were broken, but do we want a PM who's family is not committed to UK long term?

Wandawhochanged · 25/07/2022 08:46

As others have said:
Progress.
Ability not superficial features

Lilgamesh2 · 25/07/2022 08:21

@skippy67 are we not allowed to use BAME anymore? I see it all the time.

Hopefully, you'll be seeing it less and less and eventually not at all. I don't know any non white person who refers to themselves as BAME. It's a lazy acronym which needs to fade away asap. Of course you're still "allowed" to use it if you can't be bothered to find out or ask a person's ethnicity though...

HMRC website will give you all the info.

Dislike BAME intently and avoid using it

Maestoso · 25/07/2022 09:12

The conservative party was voted in on a manifesto. It doesn't matter who takes up the role as PM, the party still has to follow what was in that manifesto until the next election. I really don't understand why there is such a fuss about who does this. And who cares if they're a UK ethnic minority or a woman - someone with a bit of integrity would be the real surprise.

Mississipi71 · 25/07/2022 09:43

Yet black people refer to themselves as black and whites as whites, as it should be. Ridiculous labelling is so tedious.

Whitehorsegirl · 25/07/2022 09:56

Because that is not the point...

The point is that both candidates are utterly dreadful and there is nothing to be proud about or to celebrate about their policies and personality.

Their gender and ethnicity is totally irrelevant to me.

My concern is their right-wing politics, association with the rotten and corrupt Johnson government and total lack of integrity.

You are big fans of theirs then. I can tell this because there was not a single but xxxx

Ethelfromnumber73 · 25/07/2022 10:01

I'd be more excited about it if they weren't both massive arseholes

Coffeeenema · 25/07/2022 10:04

marcopront · 24/07/2022 21:56

So you think it should be about race or sex not about policies?

Sadly for people like the OP it's always about race.

Rummikub · 25/07/2022 10:09

What do you mean by this?

Of course people from ethnic minorities are interested in a minority ethnic potential pm. We still face racism and this is a step in right direction. When it will stop being important is when there’s no racism.

And policies are important. As I stated previously I was v excited about Kemi then read her policies.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 25/07/2022 10:09

Aside from a questionable post, they have picked an interesting name.

But if that is the game we are playing?

Nan here….

Pp have talked about whether what you say is correct but it’s hard for people to know on what party members are deciding

Many will on policies, others on the wealth type stories, or other

Last down the list will the diverse part of it I reckon

Best case would be on policies - as pp who is a party member said below

PurpleFlower1983 · 25/07/2022 10:11

I think it’s good and right that these two are being scrutinised based on their policies and not their gender/race.

Coffeeenema · 25/07/2022 10:04

Agree and the fact that the OP hasn't been back, suggests this is nothing but a goady thread.

Also Disraeli.

Full name: Benjamin Disraeli, 1st Earl of Beaconsfield

Childhood
Edit
Disraeli was born on 21 December 1804 at 6 King's Road, Bedford Row, Bloomsbury, London,[n 1] the second child and eldest son of Isaac D'Israeli, a literary critic and historian, and Maria (Miriam), née Basevi.[3] The family was mostly from Italy, of Sephardic Jewish, mercantile background (of Italian-Jewish descent).[5][n 2] He also had German ancestors.[6] He later romanticised his origins, claiming his father's family was of grand Iberian and Venetian descent; in fact Isaac's family was of no great distinction,[7] but on Disraeli's mother's side, in which he took no interest, there were some distinguished forebears, including Isaac Cardoso, as well as members of distinguished families such as the Goldsmids, the Mocattas and the Montefiores.[8][9][n 3] Historians differ on Disraeli's motives for rewriting his family history: Bernard Glassman argues that it was intended to give him status comparable to that of England's ruling elite;[11] Sarah Bradford believes "his dislike of the commonplace would not allow him to accept the facts of his birth as being as middle-class and undramatic as they really were".[12]

I agree with this, I’m a “minority” and I hate BAME. It’s a lazy catch all which is really inappropriate given the wildly different lived experiences of people of different ethnicities and background.

Well yes, quite, it says it's for "people who have their permanent home outside the UK"

110APiccadilly · 25/07/2022 11:28

Disraeli?

We also, many years ago, had the first PM whose first language wasn't English. (Not Disraeli.)

110APiccadilly · 25/07/2022 11:29

I see I should have RTFT and others have beaten me there with Disraeli.
