To not know what else to do with DM racist comment?

FluffingMarvellous · 21/07/2022 21:29

I'm utterly shocked.

Sat watching the news with DM and she randomly comes out with "I hope Rishi Sunak doesn't get PM as it would be awful to have a Muslim PM".

I was so shocked I just stared at her and said "That's completely racist, you can't say that!"

She then said "No its not really. It's political. If he got it, the Muslims would take over the country".

I was completely appalled, told her never to say anything like that to me and certainly not to the children but she just didn't get it.

DM has MH issues so it's v hard to challenge her on anything or it can turn quite nasty. But I still feel like I should have done more, I just don't know what as she's still my DM but I'm so shocked. She's never said anything like that in front of me before although I know she does have some very strongly pro Brexit ideas which almost verge on being anti non British people, but never explicit and only in line with other strongly pro Brexit people (which I'm not here to start a debate about).

Haven't told DH as would literally ban her from ever coming in the house again.

I really hope your feelings are written on your face.

I wouldn't fit in with a load of racist apologists either and I wouldn't want to. Does your circle refer to the pki shop and the chnky too?

It’s not sexist to ask for female care workers, especially when there is an element of personal care involved. I have requested it for dim in the past. As a manager it would be easier to just change it up this

I think people have missed this.

I read this thread and remembered one of my BILs use to work in social care. He only worked with men as there was an element of personal care involved.

There are also cases where you can ask in job adverts for a specific ethnicity or - which is more acceptable - request a specific language is spoken.

@Tania64 you are trolling.

Undoubtedly. I hope people spit in their food.

He spoke to Pope Benedict about converting to Catholicism within days of leaving Number 10, so clearly felt it wasn’t possible as Prime Minister.

It's rumoured that Alastair Campbell told him that Nu Labour don't do religion or "We don't do God".

RedWingBoots · 22/07/2022 15:34

@Ponoka7

You are both ignorant and Islamophobic.

Muslims aren't one monolith. Under the umbrella of Islam there are people with different skin colours, cultures, languages and slightly different beliefs. Same as Christians.

IDreamOfTheMoors · 21/07/2022 23:48

My mum was racist. She was raised by racists who were raised by racists who were raised by racists ad nauseam.
My dad was not racist. Neither were his parents, nor were their parents, ad nauseam.
Racism is learned - it most certainly is generational. You live what you learn.
Thank god we had our dad to guide us.

@IDreamOfTheMoors , that’s not what generational means. When we say that an attitude towards, say, gay or black people is generational, we mean that all people of the same generation/age may share that attitude, not that it’s an idea passed down through generations.

It’s an argument that bothers me, it feels like an excuse. My friend is 55, and hates the fact that her teen in gay. Apparently that’s a generational thing.

crwnhgow · 22/07/2022 15:48

Not as terrible as making vile racist comments towards your own family.

Although judging by your posts on other threads I'm not surprised you're taking the side of racists.

It is very obvious how hattie43 feels about such things. Unfortunately they are not alone out there.

The last time I checked humans are allowed to think whatever they like. She shared her thoughts & gave her opinion. You disagree & do not have such fears yourself - this is also okay. What's the problem?

You & people like you.

No one has to put up with racist comments.

I would dread being a fly on a wall in your home <shudders>

Thanks honey 😁

Petulathethird · 21/07/2022 23:30

It stops, or it should stop, when the majority of people accept that racist comments are not acceptable.

I suspect that you are white, middle aged or older and vote conservative.

Thank you for thinking about me.

Ponoka7 · 22/07/2022 16:15

@RedWingBoots I didn't mention Muslims, you did. I was discussing Islam and how even in the UK the Muslim council refused to get involved in blatant sexism. I'm well aware of the Muslim faith being diverse. I'm not of UK or Christian origin. Via my friends from and in Nigeria (I descend from a different country) I hear of the daily slaughtering of Christians, by ordinary, rather than militant, Muslims that never gets picked up by our News. If you mean my post about respecting age, I assure you that older women never survive, we are surplus to requirements once we can no longer produce children. I've travelled extensively through Muslim countries and regions, women don't fair well and because of that, children suffer . I have friends and family all over Africa. We've got to be really wary about painting anyone 'more respectful or good' based on one characteristic. What part of my post is racist?

Ponoka7 · 22/07/2022 16:17

But anyway, let's start a discussion on Irish Travellers and see how liberal everyone is then.

phishy · 22/07/2022 16:18

@Ponoka7 I can’t even be bothered with your posts. Incoherent bollox.

Eunorition · 22/07/2022 16:19

Cutting off thick racist parents is really easy. It's not like they have anything valuable to say. Mine would never stop banging on about whatever nonsense they'd read in the mail that morning. They'd ask my primary aged kids if they were not allowed to sing Baa Baa Black Sheep anymore, and turn any conversation to their stupid thick views like "the EU want to ban bananas."

I just stopped calling them, and they stopped calling me, and now it's been a few years since I even spoke to them. You don't need to keep crap people in your life pouring poison in your kids' ears.

daffodilandtulip · 22/07/2022 16:20

My mother being racist is one of the many, many reasons that I am no contact.

TeleFoam · 22/07/2022 16:27

Are all Conservative party members allowed to vote?

prepared101 · 22/07/2022 16:32

On the face of it I thought this was awful and islamaphobic. Then I realised that one of my (many reasons) for not liking the politics of my local MP and Jacob R-M is because I think their religious views (which differ from mine) influence their politics. Your DM's way of wording it was intolerant but we all have our unconscious biases.

It's wrong, and you were right to challenge but until she wants to reflect on her own views they won't change.

Fancydancer1934 · 22/07/2022 16:36

Corcory · 22/07/2022 16:40

What she said is so appalling, I really don't get how people live in the UK and don't understand how out of order it is. I would say however, please don't conflate racism with Brexit voters. I'm a Brexit voter as are many of my friends and family, I'm also a conservative party member in my 60s. We all wanted Kemi Badanock to be in the last two. Loads of Conservative commentators and politicians have said how good she is and that she should get a very high job in the new cabinet. I'm very proud to be part of this inclusive party.

It comes from fear. Fear of change. people in their 60s, 70s, 80s have seen massive social, economic, demographic changes over the last 40 years or so. Areas of cities have different communities, industries are not the same. Youth crime is increasing. The press have had a big part to play as well (in my opinion) being selective of what perpetrators to publish. Yes it's to do with what your family have said but it's also on your perception of the future. Some people are fearful of what they have no control of.

FluffingMarvellous · 22/07/2022 16:59

@Corcory hence why I said I didn't want to start a Brexit debate. Regardless of my personal thoughts either way on Brexit, I know lots of people with perfectly rational arguments for and against. But I know for a fact that my mum's reasoning was firmly in the Britain should be British and 'foreign' people are taking our jobs and identities school. She just hadn't ever made overtly racist statements in front of me until yesterday. I guess it shouldn't have surprised me.
