Husband thinks I was wrong for letting toddler do this

Ok so we went for a walk with 3 year ds today and we rushed out the door as in-laws were round (again at teatime!!!!!!)
anyway we had only been walking for 5 minutes when I noticed my little lad was holding himself. I asked him if he needs a wee and he said quite urgently yes I’m going to wee myself. He has only recently potty trained so although I’m trying to get him to hold it a little more, when he has to go he has to go! So I quickly get him to a drain and me and daughter make a little circle around him and let him wee in a drain. My husband was mortified by this! He couldn’t believe I let this happen right in the middle of the street, I explained that he was desperate and it was our fault and surely a quick wee in a drain then walking round with a massive wet patch on his pants
what would you do in this situation?
obviously usually he goes before we leave the house but as we are still new to potty training we, the parents also need training! Also this is something I wouldn’t normally do as I would try and find somewhere to hide but a I knew the area and knew there wasn’t anywhere close by the middle of a street was our only option. it is also a very quiet street

just curious as to what everyone thinks. My husband thought it made us look like ‘tramps’

We have done this. Your DH is being ridiculous. If your child has got to 3 and he's never had to do a weird outdoor wee he probably needs to look after him more!!

Disco2022 · 14/07/2022 21:44

Very early on in potty training when DS couldn't hold his penis very well, my friend and I held him horizontally across a drain to wee!

Changethenamey · 14/07/2022 21:46

Well my 3yr old dropped his pants in the middle of the park recently and weed before I could get to him, so what would your DH think of that 😎

op it’s potty training for a reason, he’s learning and when he’s got to go he’s got to go. I bet no one would’ve batted an eyelid even if they had seen him!

I'd say well done to your little lad - sounds like he is getting the hang of potty training.
And yes, weeing outside when you get get short is a thing.
You managed it as discreetly as you could.
Nothing to see here. Your DH is being a bit weird!

Hatsoff5 · 14/07/2022 21:47

Even as an adult the feeling of needing a wee is awful. Plenty of people do this your DH is being pathetic it would be cruel not to let him have a wee really.

Ginandslippers · 14/07/2022 21:47

What you did was fine and totally normal.

Tothemoonandbackx · 14/07/2022 21:48

So by his logic, he thinks you walking around with a child with wet pants wouldn't be 'trampy'......or weeing at the side of the road onto the pavement, he draws the line at weeing into a drain, no words!!!! Ignore him

Meraas · 14/07/2022 21:49

So what was your DH’s solution? He didn’t have one, did he? All he can do is criticise yours.

TheGoogleMum · 14/07/2022 21:50

It's not ideal but you know that. What you did was the better option in the circumstances!

Choccyoclocky · 14/07/2022 21:51

I have a travel potty for DS4 that looks like a water bottle. It is yellow and blue, from amazon. I keep it in his bag at all times but honestly, he much prefers to wee up a tree 😂 we do always choose trees that are hidden and out of the way, but DS can hold it well now.

Hugasauras · 14/07/2022 21:52

DD(3) had to wee in a bush the other day 🤷‍♀️ She was very excited about it too Grin It's the first time we've needed an al fresco pee but with the heat she's been drinking a lot more so was taken a bit by surprise!

You don't usually have the luxury of time with recently potty trained kids!

Ha ha ha this is funny, I was actually thinking about doing the same manoeuvre but luckily we managed!!

Changethenamey This will be my soon very soon, he seemed very pleased with himself and even more so when he heard my husband saying ‘no’ this will probably be an everyday occurrence now 🙈🤣

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 14/07/2022 21:54

Not ideal, but needs must! Weve had to do this a few times. I hate it, but what's the alternative?!!

However, both my mum and DH's mum think its totally normal to pee anywhere even when there's a bathroom within reach. I don't want to normalise outdoor wee's where its avoidable as DS naturally thinks its hilarious!

TeachesOfPeaches · 14/07/2022 21:55

You were only 5 minutes from home so I would have tried to get back or let my son wet himself and gone back and changed him into fresh clothes.

My son is 6 and hasn't ever done a wee outside even when I've tried to get him to eg behind a tree in the woods.

EuropeRoadtrip · 14/07/2022 21:56

I don’t see any issue with it. It would be weird to not let him wee in the drain

Beggingforsleep · 14/07/2022 21:56

I had to bring my daughters poo home in a paper bag once when she’d got caught short out! It wasn’t till she was four that we put a stop to ‘jungle wees’. They’ve got to go when they’ve got to go.

Alliolly · 14/07/2022 21:59

Meh, my 3yo had a poo in the middle of a park last week. He tried hiding behind a tree, but you can imagine how effective this was in the middle of an open field. I just collected it with a nappy bag afterwards, like cleaning after a dog haha

Lacedwithgrace · 14/07/2022 21:59

Completely fine. Dogs piss on pavements and doors!

Georgeskitchen · 14/07/2022 21:59

Your DH needs to give his head a wobble. Little boys, and little girls have been weeing in grids since grids were invented

Nothing tramps about it at all.
My 3 sons used to want a wee in every grid we passed 😅

Topseyt123 · 14/07/2022 22:00

I think you did what you had to do at the time and your DH is being a dipshit. What realistic and helpful suggestions did he make for what you should have done?

sheepandcaravan · 14/07/2022 22:00

@TeachesOfPeaches whatConfused

Seriously you would rather your child walked home in soaking pants than had a pee?

I don't get this at all.

I should add I am very rural and I would say half my children's wees are outside, but that's totally normal. Even in town, toilets are still shut re covid. Anywhere quiet is fine. It's just a pee. I'm not suggesting we start pooping all over car parks.

Nothing to see here. He had to go so he went, 100 times preferable to the poor little love wetting himself and having to walk home wet.

Me, DH and the friends we go on long country / woodland walks far from civilisation with have all been known to have a sneaky wild wee when required. Needs must. Unless he were peeing up against someone's car wheel or front door, there's no issue.

bellac11 · 14/07/2022 22:03

What will your husband do when he gets to 'that' age and he cant hold it in.

The amount of times out in the country Ive had to wee in a bush and Ive never been able to do it without the wee running in my shoes.

Its a reason I hate the countyside, no facilities.
